Valver or 106GTI

Just wondering which one people would choose on here. Currently driving an RT at the mo but towards the end of the year should have about 5k to spend so looking at both cars. So far the 106 is 1st choice.

From what ive read theyre pretty even speed wise but the 106 has slightly better handling???

Also, wot sort of £ are people paying for insurance on these motors. Il be 20 hopefully with 2 years NCB.

Thanks

with 5k u might want a newer 106

obviously i own the valver, but ive had a rallye, not a direct comparison to a GTI but it seemed a tip top car overall.

sometimes i have regrets about selling it, but am happy with a 2.0l valver and wouldnt swop it for anything

in a year u could get a willy for 4k and 1k to help insuring it, just a suggestion.

id probably go for the newer 106gti if it was me, whichever you choose im sure you wont be dissapointed if you get a well looked after example

Valver - the 106 is too small inside for me - the clio I find is more refined with a better interior - tested a 106 before the valver and I bought the valver because the handling suits me better - smoother, not as twitchy as the ickle pug...

Plus they dont look as aaarrrdddddddddddddddddd...............!

I sold my old 16V and had an open mind at the time about a new car. I tried about five 106 GTis and I dont care what anyone says, they werent a patch on my old Valver! I went to them with a totally open mind and the fact I tried that many 106 GTis goes to show that I really wanted one at the time and hoped that the ones I tried was just a crap one and another would be better. Not so - so I started looking at Williams in the end.

My friend has just gone from 106 GTi to cup and was blown away by the speed difference and braking difference. Not sure youd get blown away by the difference from a Valver to a cup, faster yes, but not blown away.

I have access to both

I own a valver and Bought GF a 106 Gti

I have to say I prefer the Valver. Much better peddle layout. Not so cramped Interior.

Speed wise the Valver does feel faster. But there usually isnt anything between them.

best to test both and see which you like best!

Id say a valver, but if you plan on doing a few engine mods, the 106s 1.6 16v responds far better to tuning that the clios 1.8 16v.

If your gonna keep the engine fairly standard go with a valver. Better looks, sounds, and ability!

I went from 106gti to CUP.

106 definitely had better handling. The grip level is probably the same but CUP feels like it has more bodyroll.

Nor does the CUP feel much quicker except over 60-70mph.

CUP is more comfortable, especially on motorways. The 106 is very noisy and low geared and will annoy you if you do a lot of long distance driving. Plus the brakes werent all that good.

But Id still get one over a 16V as they are just getting too old now and a have a high mileage.

Id say get a 106 GTI, although id suggest that the 106 would handle slightly better (although twitchy) there would not be a lot in it speed wise!

Id say the 106 has a nicer interior if you get a 2000+ model as they came with upgraded dials, and other silver bits n bobs, another good point is that all 106s have galvanised bodys so they wont rust! :D

Even my old 106 xsi which was a 1993 model had a galv body..

Its beyond me why renault didnt follow suit given the rust problems some people have (rear arches and boot especially)

seems like a lot of people with very different opinions

think my best bet will be to try them myself and see wot i think.

By the way, which do you think would cost the most on insurance?

I was hoping to be paying in the region of £1000 fully comp.

Thanks

valver possibly cheaper as its group 12 the 106 is 14 or 15 i think, although the fact its more modern and possibly harder to break into might count in its favour on the cost of insuring it

Dazz

i bought a 106 gti over a clio 1.8 16vand i havent regreted it. i do own a 02 clio aswell but its not a 1.8 16v.

Good points for me about the 106 gti is its handling and the drive. but like i have heard you are better off running a dodge viper than a 106 gti.

im 22 and i pay 874 with norwich Union

dunno why ure saying a valver or 106GTI. 106 costs more to buy, so valver is gonna be cheaper in that respect. Not thought about a 205GTI 1993 L reg or something like that? Group 13-14 insurance (last i saw... could be wrong) and very quick cars and handle better than both of those. Depends what you want I guess, driving experience or newness, refinement, reliability etc... Check the running costs of anything you buy, I find my biggest expense is my petrol consumption. 200 miles outta a full tank seems pretty bad... Insurane is another concern at your age, ideally you are better keeping your current car until your 21, then you have even more options. Why compromise when you can be looking at 306 GTIs, Cups etc etc.

Good luck in whatever you choose tho m8, end of the day decide what you use the car for and how much money you wanna spend on it.

you have to put up with a 205s interior though which I could never do!

I dont know if it matters to some but to me a good quality interior is a must - its what I have to look at the most while driving! (apart from the road that is )

valver - drive a 106 and its common, i see a 106 GTi everyday, where as i never see a valver, and when i do it gets a lot more looks, as its a better looker imo.

Downside is...

finding a mint valver......hard as hell, where as finding a nice GTi would be far easier.

  RB5 & 172

i went from a mk1 172 to a 106 gti and have no regrets. it is so much more fun to drive and now it has a few little breathing mods seems near enough as fast. might even get striped soon.:D

cheack the wires going into the map sensor, they tend to wear and then the engine hesitates as the wires rub when the engine moves when you put your foot down. easy to replace but just hastle.

i thought about a valver but struggled to find any decent ones, i need a car asap and found a good gti.

No comparison! Go for the 106 GTI..cant be compared to a 16v clio - more to the williams range. with the 106, your getting the best model in its class, with the clio 16v..your nowhere near the williams.

Also, its difficult enough finding a 16v in good condition, they say the 106 looks dated, theyve obviously got selevtive eye sight as the clio looks nowhere near as good as the 106. Not a fact - just my opinion.

Get the 106 on the open road and its a hoot to drive and better still, it instills you with an aire of confidence that other cars (for the same price) cannot match!

106 all the way mate..10/10

Mate do what i did n buy a cheap newish valver and make it mint!! Lots more fun!!

Or for that sort of money just buy a decent Williams, you will get a nice one for that money!!

Blimey, sounds like u either love or hate the 106?!?!?

I must admit i do like the look of the valver and after seeing one boot it past me on a short bit of dual carriageway the other day im very impressed with the way they go. The only thing thats puts me off is the newest one i could get is at least 5 years old? (they stopped making them in 98??)

Im definitely after a newer car with air con, full electrics etc. thats why im not looking at a 205 or the likes.

Is there any other cars i should look at. Thought about the vts but its basically a 106 in a different shell and is too "Kev" like for me.

Thanks
