Warranty Claim

Today I got back my RenaultSport Clio 172 mk1 from the garage. 3yrs old & 20k trouble free miles on the clock & it was in for a minor service. They discovered the alternator belt has started coming adrift & had damaged the cambelt http://www.scoobynet.co.uk/bbs/images/smilies/frown.gif

Service + alternator belt kit + cambelt kit + lots of lovely labour (big engine in little engine bay means alot of work to get at it) gives me just slightly less than a grand on my credit card http://www.scoobynet.co.uk/bbs/images/smilies/eek.gif

It is 4 months out of warranty.
What do you reckon my chances would be of getting any money out of Renault even considering it is xmas? http://www.scoobynet.co.uk/bbs/images/smilies/rolleyes.gif

It might be worth having a look http://www.clio172.com/advice/clio_172_tech_bull.htmlhere

There is a tech bulletin with regards to the cam belt/alternator belt.

I had all mine changed just before my warranty was up and didnt have to pay much - as my engine number was listed and if your car is one of those listed, you may be able to get a huge discount.

Good Luck

Did they fix it without telling you? I for one will not be taking my car to Renault to get stuff like that done they will just rip you off! (if i keep my car that long)

Not entirely sure how the alternator belt coming adrift would harm the cambelt ? I thought the cambelt was behind a cover, the belt moving off the alternator etc still wouldnt put it near the cam belt ? Out of interest had the alternator belt been changed ever, supposed to be done 36K or 2 years ! If not this is perhaps a good advert for doing it !

My Alternator belt was shredded by a failed tensioner, needed new alternator, pulleys, tensioner etc.

I also had the cambelt etc done under the tech note mentioned in tomboys post (at an earlier time).

The 5 year extended warranty was the best £650 I ever spent. I have claimed >2K on it so far, my car was during the time you only got 1 year on a UK car. Still got 2 years left and on the cars past record that is big peace of mind. I mean the breakdown cover alone would have cost ~£200.

Good luck getting whatever you can.

Out of interest, why dont you ask a good local garage what they would charge to do the same job?

Why did you have to have yours changed? The note just talks about excessive noise rather than an actual fault.

No I was informed all the way & they actually showed me what the problem was.

If someone like Hillpower were in my neck of the woods then I probably would have but in my experience trying to save a few quid going to an non specialist can cost you more money in the long run.

i would have thought there would be some form of renault contribution apllicable due to its low mileage.
