Yet Another Clio 172 Cup Road/Track (no 3)

  Cup In bits
So no3 is now in my possession, instead of carrying on Jim's thread I'll start a new one to document its progress and to keep the maintenance up to date.

I decided to buy another cup to keep me happy through the summer a good few weeks ago and a nice car came up at the right time in the shape of @leeds_182 cup which most will know by now on here. It was registered as a cat D in 2010 which was only found when a potential buyer HPI'd the car. I did some digging and everything seemed kosher with the car so I put in an offer and the deal was agreed and deposit payed, I knew the damage would only be minor but more on that later.

So I set off on Thursday morning with the missus on the train from Aberdeen down to Selby in Leeds to get the car, we finally got there around 4pm after a few delays with the trains but never mind we were there after a short taxi to Jim's. I had asked all the questions you do when buying previously so I was 90% the car was as described, I had a quick look around and test drive. Very happy with the condition the money was handed over, I drove to the post office quickly to get some tax and then back to Jim's for the V5 to be signed off, all went well and we were on our way over to Helmsley on the Yorkshire Moors to stay for a few nights.

I had planned a journey for the way home that took us over the moors as I had never driven them before, we set off at 11am after quite a heavy night. The route was Helmsley to Pickering on the A170, left onto the A169 towards Goathland, onto Key Green and Eghton and then finally on the A171 to Middlesbrough. Roads were great and the weather was fair, definitely worth the detour and I'll be back down that neck of the woods in the future. We finally arrived back in Aberdeen totally shattered at 5:30pm after a couple of stops in Edinburgh. The car never missed a beat and I clocked up nearly 550 miles over the 3 days averaging 30mpg calculated, not bad I thought.

Anyway back to the car, the spec is:

Engine;
Jenvey itbs with gen90 ecu mapped by rs tuning
Catcam 428 cams
182 manifold
Decat
BTB stealth exhaust

Suspension;
Spax RSX coilovers
Polybushed front end
Polybushed dog bone
Vibra technics engine mount
Suspension fully set up for fast road by track torque in April 2013

Interior;
New pioneer head unit with iPod connection
Uprated front speakers
New black headliner
OMP deep dish wheel

Brakes;
new rear genuine pads and discs
new oem front discs with ds2500 pads

wheels and tyres;
15" speedline 2118s in mint condition
Toyo r1r's on the front
Nankang NS-R 2's on the rear

None of the following is needed really but I'm fussy and like to strip a new car right down so I know where it stands and then you can maintain it easier from then on.

So future plans;

Engine

Do the timing belt, it was done in 2012 but no receipt. I have one on the shelf so why not.
While the belts off I'll have a look to see exactly what cams are fitted, the BHP isn't quite what it should be and it isn't unheard of for Cat Cams to send the wrong cams so we'll see.
The cam cover, thermostat housing, engine mount and gearbox mount will get blasted and painted up. I'll change the coolant while doing that.
The dephaser solenoid seal needs replacing too.
Slam panel end pieces will be getting painted in mondial to tidy up the bay also.
I will do the Burpspped mod to the gear linkage.
Fit a breather tank as I'm not keen on having a filter on the end of the breather pipe, it gets messy and the Pipercross filters with age have been known not to provide enough escape for the system.
The engine position and dog bone mount need looked at, 4th gear selection inst the best when hooning and coming down the box, it just needs a little position tweek.
Tidy up some of the engine loom and p-clip some looms and hoses out of the way.

Suspension

The coilovers will be coming off to be stripped, cleaned and freed up ready for a more aggressive geo and height change for my upcoming track day.
All suspension consumables will be replaced as necessary.
RARB will be going on.

Brakes

Full strip down front and back, paint the callipers, de glazing the pads as they some how got glazed on the Yorkshire moors ;)

Interior

Get the front seats out, fab up some extra low subframes and mount my Corbeau Revenge's and Sabelt Cup racer harnesses.
Wet vac the rear bench and carpets
Do the Burpspeed mod on the gear linkage
Clean the steering wheel so it resembles alacantra again

Exterior

Machine the headlights as there is some crazing and tidy up all the wiring for the HID ballasts.
When the spring comes along I'll do a full machine and detail.

I have a track day booked on the 1st of March so 90% of that list will be done before then. Today we had lovely weather up here so I set about valeting the car and just a general tidy up.

The car as it stood after its journey to its new home.

The damage that made it a cat d, very small kink in the boot which is minor, I'll strip it all down and paint the bare metal to seal it off.

IMG_2337_zps82edfabb.jpg

No other damage to be seen.

IMG_2360_zps4692af80.jpg

All the standard parts came with the car too including the mapped standard ecu for when it just had the cams so it will change back to standard in a day, I think this will happen after the summer (sorry Jim :eek:) but it wont be broken into pieces and scrapped, it will live on just in a lower spec.

Updates will be coming in the next few days as I cross all the jobs off the list, sorry about the pic heavy nature.

Another one! Fair play, you obviously like them and I can't blame you. Had mine for 12 years.

Very nice mate, does look like a cracking car..so you have 3 now, a Race car, Track car and road car lol

To be honest Iv I had space I would def buy one and keep it standard to do track days in to learn circuits.

  Cup In bits
No no I just own the two now, the race car and this one. The other one was standardised before Christmas and sold to my mate.

Keep up eh Sonny ;)

Thanks G.

Has anyone treated the side strips on a cup, it seems someone has tried to t-cut or use some aggressive polish on them when they are either a matt paint finish or just plastic. I'm looking for something to bring them back up before I try a machine buff and wreck them.

You aiming to be out with it on the 1st? Glad to hear it!

Theres no planning, I'll be there unless I get called away ;)

Away to do the suspension, brakes and get the materials for seat subframes and a custom tracking rig today.

After a recent thread revival on here I decided to make myself a string rig so that I can geo the car anywhere as long as its nearly flat. Ideal for track side adjustments.

So I came up with a plan and went to my local B&Q to see what was in offer and what was cheapest while still looking professional.

I started with this;

2x lengths of 1830x19mm thin wall steel tube.
1x length of 2400x19mm thin wall steel tube.
4x 19mm plastic elbows (2 will be returnedas they weren't needed)
2x 19mm curtain rail holders
10x 20mm end caps
6x 18mm x M6 threaded expanding half crescent bosses
4x 19mm curtain pole hooks (only 2 needed)
1 x 10 pack of M6x70mm bolts/nuts/washers
1 x 18m brick line
2 x large nuts
1x steel rule

99802714-3FE3-4377-90F4-28586C804524_zpskwozihvi.gif

I then removed one of the wing fixings

Drilled the curtain rail brackets to allow bolting

Bolted to the wings

Slid through one of the 1830mm lengths of pipe and cut slots 50mm in from each end for the line, tied a nut to the end of the line and then made a loop for hanging. This now allows me to check the front camber before I go onto checking the tracking.

FA44B4FB-ED23-4875-B218-8797BB4CFD7F_zpsutdsxbbx.gif

I then brought that piece of pipe around the front of the car and secured it through the lower grill with the 19mm curtain pole hooks.

E45BCB20-E2DD-4C23-A590-6F5CAC35AA13_zpst8e9vjzf.gif

Made up a rig for hanging off the back bumper and tied a loop to mount onto the tube again with slots 50mm in from the end of the 1830mm x 19mm length.

52622BF3-E230-46AC-8492-849D44D59EA4_zpsorjiaeni.gif

I brought the rig up into the roof and again tied another loop in the line to allow the checking of rear camber.

6B428023-116D-4C7F-B83F-071C6187C535_zpsfis0edee.gif

Then I put it on the back bumper again and made various holes and an adjustment bar to allow different heights of the bar as the height of the car goes up and down with different setups.

2C53ECCC-7045-4E89-82F4-88B59AA021B6_zps0deelifg.gif

The rig off the car. This allows me to setup toe in/out front and back and camber front and back also to a good enough standard while still keeping the car mobile to settle and roll out the suspension tension that's built up during adjustment and height changes.

24D9F323-83D7-4EE9-A841-5CEFBAEA906D_zpsnrluuaj3.gif

I only have to undo 4 bolts and the rig can be slid into a tent bag for keeping.

I carried out a quick geo with the rule I had but I really need a new rule with metric scales down both sides which I will point at the zero end to give more accurate readings.

This is the front O/S reading. You can see I have a measurement of 51mm at the front edge and 54mm at the rear edge which is a total of 3mm difference across the wheel face. If you divide that by two it gives you the toe in millimetres. You can then take this and use some wizadry to come up with a figure in degrees that is in this case 27' (minutes) which is a fud hair off of a 1/2 degree of toe out.

Conversion table for 15" & 16" wheels. Thanks Chip-mk1

C1510B82-E207-4668-96C6-456C5E5B3369_zpsjijz2c6e.gif

And the quick geo I done which I have to emphasise needs a new rule to complete properly.

87CEFC36-3C71-4B62-9EFB-687C5A47FD1A_zpsktxjp0ud.gif

The geo printout I was given with the car which was carried out almost a year ago so something's will have moved slightly but not to the degree that my geo would say.

54BA74E2-4462-400A-8735-996E550BE1B6_zpsktvkvlhy.gif

So that's my homemade geo rig which can be used on any phase 2 Clio from one with totally standard suspension to a cup racer which is the lowest you will find a Clio. Adjustment is made through the lower grille at the front and the adjustable bar On the rear part of the rig. Costs were circa £60 as I have to return two elbows that werent needed and I would like to add another strengthening piece to the back rig but I ran out of tubing.

Very nice mate.

Worth adding a spirit level to the cross bar for camber. As if you have it corner weighted the shell won't be level.

I suppose it would be a good reference for checking the level of ground the cars on but the camber is in relation to the plumb (vertical) which is exactly as a hunter would do it, they don't take a reading in relation to a datum on the car? Am I missing something?

Sorry mate. Total brain fart there. Yes So long as the ground is flat it's fine as the plumb is by nature self vertical. Doesn't matter if the bar itself is flat or not. It just won't be a right angle if it isn't but that doesn't matter.

Morgan, fancy coming and doing mine  looks goooood!

Aye no problem, fit ph2 front and back bumpers first though haha. I would need to add to the front bar to clip onto a ph1 front end somehow.
