Yet Another Clio 172 Cup Road/Track (no 3)

  Cup In bits
Yeah I like to paint these engines as they're scabby looking IMO. I only do it if I can get things blasted properly to get a good finish and not have overspray everywhere.

Crisis averted..... I pulled the TPS sensor wiring the other night and my search for a new one brought up nothing that could be with me by Friday. I called K-Tec for a breakout of their adapter loom and Sean was as helpful as ever to answer technical questions and also spoke to Jenvey and was given a diagram for the Colvern sensor.

With both pieces of info I was happy to pull the plug apart carefully with a pick and try save the terminals, luckily they came out and were rescued :D

Good work, why on earth do all this to put it back to standard and sell it though??

Looking forward to getting out on Sat!

Cheers Steve.

Steve's turbo definitely :p

Gaz its nothing that's cost me of any real money, just some of my time and it will still up the value of the standard car when it goes for sale, I usually make money on all my cars as I have OCD and the means to fix things cheap.

I don't drive cars that aren't mechanically 100% to the best of my knowledge. I lean on my cars a little to much for to be chancing everything's as it should be because the last person said so or I have a receipt for something. You know yourself being a mechanic, there is some special people out there fixing cars.

Plus I'm a tart.

Loving the DIY geo tool and great result on getting them seal straight, what tools did you use on them?

Here's a question.

What will be finished first, Steve's turbo, or Morgans race car...

Cheers Steve.

If I were a gambling man, I'd put a safe bet on Morgan. I just think you don't want your race car finished! :rasp:

Yeah its handy cheers. What seal do you mean?

I HATE wiring & plumbing things that's all, it will be going this year.

I would definitely buy a used car from this guy ;)

Sold to the man with the car collection.

I had a few more hours down at the car tonight. Got most of it done, just the fluids, set the raw values on the TPS, bleed the brakes and tidy up the wiring (I ran out of cable ties) oh and fit the breather tank which should be here tomorrow.

All fixings and seals replaced

Great updates mate. Is the race car getting neglected? ;)

Not anymore than it was before I bought this thing :(

Do you have a link to the mondial in a can? Also is it a decent match?

Great work on the crackle painted parts, looks great!

It seems alright to me but I'm not the best judge being colour blind lol, also it was only in the engine bay. If it was on a flat panel it would be a better test. I am happy with the cans and how they atomised though so its not cheap rubbish, they're better than a Halfords can for sure.

By seals I mean the jacking points.

Ahh okay, a selection of pry bars, punches, dolly's, vice grips and a hammer. Once you get it peeled of the floor you can start shaping it with the punches and vice grips.

do you realise you've painted the engine green?

Yuup, I wanted to do the cam cover a different colour from the orange I usually do. Looks like John Deere green lol, I like it.

That's great, thanks.

I actually read all this last night and the amount of work gone into this is unreal! You don't think that much work goes into stripping a car until you see it all bit by bit.

  Cup In bits
Yeah its surprising, that's only circa 30 hrs spent on this thing from start to finish, I probably spent 150 on my race car cage and shell prep alone and then all the mechanicals, electrical and paint . That's nuts.

In their defence Ive found the halfords custom mixed cans to be good, they are a totally different setup in terms of the nozzle etc compared to the cheapy cans off the shelf.

Ive had williams blue and RB blue from them and both were better than my eyes are capable of telling any difference TBH.
Mind you Lesley mixed them herself as she is a manager there and is proper OCD about getting it just right!

They are dearer than that link though IIRC

  Cup In bits
Yeah my comparison was to the off the shelf jobs where the nozzles block and it sprays blotchy metallic flakes.

Mate, did you seal round the cover bolts holes after this pic was taken a they can leak from there?

Also, seems a lot of sealant you have used. How much did it squeeze out from the outside as it would have done the same on the inside.

I did mostly yeah, the nozzle I had was huge hence the slug of silicone but it ain't too bad. I know its a little excessive.

Just done the same as my last two really and they have been good...... touch wood. Saturday will tell though but its not a big issue for me to reseal the cam cover if need be.

  172 cup, Impreza P1
Just in case you are not aware the biggest issue of excessive sealant is the pieces that fall off a block oil ways or the pick up to the pump.

I found very little sealant is needed and smooth it out with my finger and then remove the excess before fitting the cover.

As you say, not a biggy to redo the process but just a pain to have to do the timing every time.

  182/RS2/ Turbo/Mk1
I've also seen people kill their engine from silicon excess.
The strainer in the pump is a really bad design for collecting silicon.

  Cup In bits
Yeah I have seen the silicone and all sorts in the strainers when engine's fail on here, it wasn't to excessive but the pic makes it look worse I think. Very little was squashed to the outside. Maybe it all went inside :quiet:

So pretty much the last push before my track day.

I waited in until I got my tank delivered this afternoon.

It comes a two port tank.

5D0C1DD4-4146-404F-AC0B-E200850262F1_zpsnlcopyg1.jpg

So I ordered another plug to make it a one port, the cap is the breather.

I then spent a couple of hours tidying up the messy wiring and running it all in the channel under the thermostat housing where it should be. Filled the PAS an coolant, bled both including the brakes.

After pulling the wiring on the TPS the other day I had to reset the raw values with the computer. I'm no mapper but the gen90 has a lovely easy interface for using. I had some help from Sean @ ktec to get a connection and he talked me through some basics of the ECU so thanks for that if you see this.

With the engine running as it should if not a little lean but I'll cross that bridge later I done the Burpspeed gear linkage mod.

I then measured and made up some extra low base frames for the seats. They were just thrown together and I had no time to paint them, that will be done later.

Last few snagging and some unexpected too.

The breather tank was against the battery so I fly ended down the bolts and added cushion so I don't end up with battery acid everywhere.

Used some industrial Velcro to stick the ballasts and tidied the wiring away.

The paint went funny when heated with the heat gun, it reminded me if that tie due t-shirts of the 90's where the colour changed with heat

I then went for a good run to check everything and within two miles the brakes were fading as per. I had to improve something and I wasn't going to fit my race cars pads so the bumper came off AGAIN.
