My 320d has been spot on so far (touch wood). Change the oil every 10k miles and turn off stop/start and should prevent any issues.

Is that because it only got 10k miles on it @Davyy ??

I've seen instances where go to BMW, have a new chain kit fitted with new guides and tensioners and then have them fail after only 15k miles! I have no idea how they can design something so shite? They need to have the oil dropped every 6k imo, Same with the N14 engine too, utter dogwank. I change the oil in my mrs' Mini every 4k. Ain't no way I'm replacing that c**t

Give it time. Not a case of if, it's a case of when.

It’s likely yes.. but it is scaremongering a bit. Think how many cars that engine is used in.. hundreds of thousands probably. The main issue is that BMW recommend longlife oil and to change the oil every 25k miles.

?? coming up to 90k, but there are loads on 200k on original chain. It’s ‘only’ ~£1k to fix if it does go.

The engine service intervals are long, but I dont really think it comes down to that. It's just a fundamental design flaw with the tensioner.

My auntie has one and it's on 100k. She had nothing but trouble in the first few months of owning it, luckily she had warranty so she got a fair few grands worth for nowt?

It's the same with the Megane with oil changes, Renault say every 18k with the M9R... Nah mate, that s**t gets changed every 8k without fail! I've seen what 18k oil changes does to the cam sprocket!

more for my reference, a few pics of the car before and after the wheel spacers where fitted, mtec 15mm spacers, pms swirl flap blanks, new centre caps for when i get the wheels refurbed. cheap amazon caps £6 for the lot as i think genuine ones are £15 each.

That’s why I’ve not noticed it then [emoji23]

It’s definitely seeing a map, I may just stick some masking tape over the mpg display, probably for the best

That mpg doesn’t sound right on the motorway. As Dave says check running temps, has it got I-Drive ?

for the remap, although I do have ade tuning local to me, who maps my mates 725 bhp Astra, so will have a think on that, also rs tuning are an option, just going to get some bits together 1st.

Ade should sort you out alright - I still get email alerts of some of their remaps from T5 vans through to Focus ST's and those mad things like the Astras.

He bought my Evo off me and tempted me for a long time about a remap before I sold it!

The E6x platform is solid, M57 is a brilliant lump but you can't compare it to the newer stuff for economy (but like you say why buy a 3.0 diesel for economy!!)

Mine has tested my patience in the past 120k miles at times, but on the whole been great (E61 has more issues with air suspension, tailgate wiring, etc!)

On 183k now, has been mapped for the past 100k+, and does a LOT of towing. Its still on the original turbo and orignal DPF. I had a DPF lifespan counter expire, and back pressure readings are still low... still there and still spot on. I've done the thermostats and glowplugs a couple of times in my ownership, which has probably helped.

I had the infamous 6HP26 clutch E failure around 130k miles (Box was serviced @ 100k), which was inevitable. Box rebuild and new torque converter.... flawless for the past 50k+. I keep thinking about changing to an F11, but the E6x just work, and are relatively cheap to maintain ?

Mine was a 6 - reg V194 KRS, I think? ;)

that will be the one, only seen it once from memory, looked very nice though!

yeah from what I've read they seem to reliable motors ( fingers crossed ) and quite happily do huge milage, nice to here yours is going strong! mines only on 92k so nothing really for these, got to expect general wear and tear.

can i ask what the gearbox rebuild cost was?

got a local gearbox specialist near me, who have good feedback so will take it there for a gearbox sevice when it hits 100k. ( think that's the recommended? )

Rebuild with new torque converter, new solenoids and all the associated stuff (10L ZF lifeguiard oil etc), at a ZF specialist.... was around £1800

If its not been serviced before, in my opinion I wouldn't touch it, its debatable whether it had an effect on mine or not.
I had mine serviced at a ZF centre @ 100k, then it went with the clutch E fault at 130k anyway.
My mates E91 has 140k on it, never serviced no issues. Another E90 went at 68k. All the same fault.
Rebuild would have been much less without TC and solenoids (circa £1-1.2k), but I would have kicked myself if I had TC issues after it had been rebuilt.... The entire job was done within 2 days!

I’m not sure if it’s ever been serviced tbh, is a service about £300? Guess it’s a gamble! it’s been under bmw warranty till dec 2017, so am I right in thinking if I go into a main dealers I’ll be able to get a list of what’s been done to the car over the years? Or Is there any way of getting this information online?

I’d of been getting the tc done also in your situation, that would have been an ass!

Yeah I paid £300, so its in the ball park. Yes, 100% should be on the BMW system if its always been there (they won't have touched the box though unless it had a warranty job related to it, considering they class the oil as lifetime ?

  535d / t5 caravelle
I’d read a bit about the oil being lifetime lol, think I’ll try and dig up some history about it anyway, cheers

Sealed for life gearboxes are bullshit, I would defo add it into normal servicing maintenance.
if i didn't and the box s**t itself I'd always be kicking myself, saying that, spoke to a mate with a 530d on 187k, he bought it recently, he planned on servicing the box, but one of his mates has just done his and straight after the box has gone, so he's decided to leave it.

picking 5 of these up tomorrow night for winter tyres, think they'll look pretty s**t tbh, 17's will look proper lost under the arches, but should do the job come the s**t ( er ) weather.

funny you should mention your mates box dying. I did my oil and pan last weekend and it flashed up last night with a fault - checked the codes and if you cross reference with what's said on the internet, it's a pretty terminal diagnosis.
went for a blast up the lanes in it last night on the way home from my missuses, and it seemed to be fine.

maybe it's just learning it's adaptations again or something...... time will tell i guess

If you also look into the 6HP26 documentation/manuals, the correct service/drain/fill procedure is all based around temperature and the car being 100% level to get it spot on - shame its not just as simple as 'changing the oil'. I factored in the box rebuild price when I got the car nearly four years ago, and knew it was inevitable eventually, so wan't too shocked when it needed doing.

I'm also in 2 minds, mine was serviced a while back, but id thought about doing it again in preparation for XHP ...
After reading around a bit more, im not so sure!!
As @f0xy says, its deffo a workshop job as it needs to be level/at the correct temperature. Do it on the driveway and it will likely be wrong.

I’m now thinking I may just leave it, especially now your thinking the same! It’s not like I hammer it about either, so it’s got a pretty easy life ( for now ) I’ll do a bit more digging around I think.

That might be the better option? If you're not giving it death everywhere and unlike @f0xy who uses his for towing - probably leaving it alone makes more sense.
