Oops. Im no mecanic, but i would assume that even when people have access to the correct locking tools, they sometimes dont use them ...

Whilst naming and shaming isnt the answer, it hopefully stops new owners going to the "wrong garages" And pushes the work to the good ones, BTM, Danny, Birchdown ect

I'm all for naming and shaming, I'd certainly want to know of people's bad experiences with places before trusting them with my pride and joy, I've trusted reviews in the past and paid the price when it all went tits up

I actually think the hammer was to hit me with if I kept taking photos. Other than that, I also have no idea why it was there. They had done the service before the belt........ maybe something was stuck? I dunno.

In any event, the car has been fine since then, with no evidence of the timing being out (idles fine, runs clean up to the redline, still very fast). However, to satisfy the moaners on here, I am considering buying a pair of cam end covers and having the old ones out to check the timing.


Thinking on, could the hamemr be there to knock the new cam end covers back in place??

I don't know if you're right either Chris, but if you are, it's not what the OP wants atm. Plus, lets be honest, it's not like there's not been enough bad press as it is.

If a specialist is going to pump out shoddy work then they should be picked up about it, how else are they going to learn or change. People avoiding them for future work will soon make them realise their slip up and sort out their standards.

Instead by not naming them, people will use them in good faith and end up with a FUBAR engine and a massive bill, all because of the "I'm not going to name them" mentality.

Sad times......:S

I'm not name slinging as its not the done thing, if the customer wants to "name and shame" then that's his call, but knowing this forum well it will turn into 20pages of the following

"they're great"

"no they're s**t"

"mace is sexy"

yada yada



Also from previous dealings (via customer info) they simply deny that anything is wrong, so either i'm talking out my arse or they're too arrogant to admit they can't do the job properly :mad:

Looks like the timing on my 197 cams after they were fitted...... some quality work by someone there!

But if they are cheaper than everyone else they will still get loads of business.

A lot of people don't read about the problems and just go for the cheapest they can find. It's not until they have a problem that they find out about other people's issues.
 
^ Agreed, i STILL get people moaning about prices, :( What do you say like, well, no, it's as cheap as we can, we do it to make money at the end of the day, it's X amount and the job's done correct, or i bloody hope so!!!

Be reet fred, the cream always comes to the top dude! ;)

Out of curiosity what happens should a cambelt job not be done properly?
Just a piss poor running engine or any major work?
 
^depends how bad it is

timing slightly out, you won't notice (but belt could wear quicker if tensioner is off, in 95% of cases it is, the belt off this one is just over 1 year old, it looks like its done 70K miles)

timing miles out, will idle like crap and feel really flat - bye bye 20bhp
 
The price is what it is. No point contesting it. It is what it is and you get what you pay for. I spent £700+ at freds the other week. It was worth every penny. My timing is now right and I had a big service including plugs etc.

Ill be spending it again in 32,000 miles time too.
