my clio 182 turbo conversion

  clio 182
just took it out for a run round town, still jerky untill its been upto temp for a litle wile but after that runs perfect. pulls and pulls, came across someone i new in a 182 and soon found out how much faster mine is now, live in cumbria so thers some nice long A-roads pretty much empty. my girlfriend is absolutly pissed of with the car now, im scared to even mension it around her haha, she hates it!

Hi Simon,

They're a real headache to map at 1500-2000rpm because of the VVT change over Simon, so it's a little bit of a compromise in terms of tune. It should only be very light, it's the best it can be. It seems more of a job to get right on the later in-tank regulated fuel systems. I could bore you with the reasons if you wanted :) I did a good mix of driving in it, it shouldn't be noticable enough to be problematic, or atleast I hope not.

Cheers, Chris :)

Scoff, do you not wire the solenoid into the aftermarket ECU, or is this one on a piggyback?

Interesting! As the turbo donor car I just got had the dephaser unbolted, but still plugged in the loom?

Great car too mate, bet you love it!

Mine is the other way around, its still bolted in place but currently its not connected to the loom, at some point I will wire it into the aftermarket and advance the cam when off boost and at a big throttle angle, but havent got round to it yet, and I didnt want to leave the standard ECU controlling it as then it would be on when on boost and I wanted to avoid that as it can increase EGTs (im on 197 cams)

  182/RS2/ Turbo/Mk1
What would happen if it was all left bolted in and connected then?

On my car, it would mean that the standard ECU would advance it, which would give me more overlap and higher EGTs, it wasnt an issue on the old engine (which ran it connected) as that was only 172 cams, but with the 197 being a bit wilder anyway its more of an issue.

cars got the standard ecu to keep to the drive by wire but has an aftermarket adaptronic ecu aswell.

got the graphs up :)

picture of the turbo as well, very tight squeeze. already limited space in a 182/172 engine bay so i can imagion the first turbo conversions on these where abit of a head scratcher.

In which case you could give the aftermarket control of the solenoid instead if you wished as the adaptronic will be able to operate it, should be smoother then, although TBH if its only when warming up it might not be worth the hassle!

Cool stuff :)
Should think that drives very well indeed.

Great results mate and glad you like it:)

If you don't mind could you on me how much it all cost? Please

hi mate, it cost all in all for the used kit, new ecu, instalation and mapping just short of £5k, i went about things the long way tho, the kit was a second hand one and i upgraded, added and changed a few parts, had a new turbo made and altered by cr turbos costing around £600, added the low comp head gasket from engine dynamics for more safety. new downpipe and link pipe and a some other bits'n'bobs. glad i did things this way tho as i knew all the parts that were going on were good, also its kind of unique. i did alot of searching before and ther isnt realy a cheap sollution for big power gains on 182/172's unless you can do the work yourself. i could of done it abit cheaper but it would of meant compromising on a couple of things and i didnt realy want to. hope some of that rabble helps :)

had the car out again and im getting use to the cold starts, ther not problamatic, just have to give it time to get up to temp wich isnt long. each time i take it out seems to get better, runs perfectly. nice solid car and feel. wish the girlfriend was as happy! she says its like im cheating on her with a black girl called clio! haha

He'll have the same setup as me with the adaptronic ecu controlling everything apart from the dash.

cupman - how long have you had yours done, do you have a similar thing with yours? mine is abit jumpy upto 3000rpm untill hot but when its warm it sometimes still does it slightly. its happiest when its gettin pushed abit

transient fuelling can be a lot more time consuming than the flat out stuff. And its also sometimes hard to replicate on the rollers. Ideally you want someone in the car with you to correct it as its happening, but obviously it can end up expensive in mapping time.
Have you got a wideband in the car?

A wideband is an air fuel ratio monitor, so you can see if during the hiccups its going rich or lean, as its more likely that than being down to the timing.

  clio 182
oh okay, well it would be nice to get to the bottom of it but its not to much trouble for now. need some funds back before i can do any more. could it cause any damage running it as it is, chris had to re-time the engine when it was at efi so im asuming the timing is not the problem. and can this wideband solve the problem or is it just good at taking data?

  182/RS2/ Turbo/Mk1
Wideband is just a gauge to tell you what is going on.

If its too rich its unlikely to cause a problem.
If its too lean there is a chance you could get piston issues as a result, although if its just a brief splutter its unlikely.

  182/RS2/ Turbo/Mk1
Few wires, which is easy, then mounting the gauge can take time depending on how neat you want to be.

If you were local I'd put my handheld analyser up it for you, which literally takes about 30 seconds to install.

so am i right in thinkin the problem is just tweeking the map till its right? i drove it to work this morning and it was quite jerky, il have to get it sorted.

Certainly sounds that way to me.

Manufacturers spend 100s of thousands of pounds to write a map, there are nearly always compromises in aftermarket maps done in a couple of days on the cheap, and also the ECU you have on there simply isnt as well designed for smooth running of an engine as the original one was either.

Best bet is keep making note of any issue, and take it back to scoff with details of all the things that need tweaking as its only by driving a car around for hundreds of miles at different temperatures etc you can find all these things.
When trying to map a car in just a couple of days for example, its impossible to have it cold much of the time, as once its warmed up its the next day till its cold again and then you only get a couple of minutes mapping and then its hot again.

  clio 182
in an ideal world i would take it back to scoff but its a fair drive from my house, 2:30hours +. thers a guy localy (jdm) who is ment to be good but ive heard mixed reviews? would it be a bad idea to take it to him due to the fact scoff has already got a good knowleadge of my car and ecu? jdm is recomended locally and if i can get him used to my car then with a few visits i thought i should be able to get it running perfect? with mapping the car would it need to all be adjusted or can he just alter it around the problamatic rev range? another option is someone known locally again that do on the road maps who have some crazy high bhp cars? wat do you think? chris would be my first choice if it wasnt down to distance and collection inconvenience
