Major service for blue dci yesterday. Cambelt, aux kit, oil change and a few small jobs.
Cambelt was last done December 2021 / 143,000 miles so was not due on age, but with mileage on almost 217,000 was more or less due as 75k interval. Its been using a little bit of coolant so suspected the water pump might be weeping, and needed to do another small job to the cooling system so kill 2 birds/1 stone as coolant aint cheap now..
Box of parts which has been sat there for at least 8 months. Planned on doing it in winter but didnt happen.
Gates cambelt kit, gen ren aux kit, valeo water pump, gen ren aux crank pulley etc
20 mins later cambelt is revealed, doesnt look too bad
Crank and cam pinned, cambelt removed and inspected, still ok being honest. Id bet the tensioner, waterpump or aux belt into the cambelt would go before it snapped.
Aux belt starting to crack, not bad as its been on for around 40 thousand as changed at mid point. Tensioner still strong but pulley very worn, this was giving a bit of noise.
Cambelt cover removed and waterpump off, slight traces of coolant leak on waterpump as expected.
Cambelt covers cleaned/degreased as lots of muck aka dirty diesel.
Mating surface cleaned for water pump and new one fitted/cambelt cover back on
New cambelt belt on, vernier cam pulley loose, diesel pump mark aligned with bolt, tensioner set, torque vernier bolts. Old crank pulley on, rotate belt 2x turns and reset tensioner, check all pins still fit. So easy these 1.5dci's.
Wand out for the first time in ages to angle torque crank pulley bolt
This engine is a bitza, i upgraded the cam pulley to vernier, crank pulley/aux pulley is the old one off the Kangoo compact and is keyed so not floating. Need to be careful with torque settings in this case as m12 and m14 crank bolts. This is m12 bolt as earlier crank, and requires 60nm + 100deg.
New aux pulley fitted, marked just incase
This is where things get a bit interesting. New aux belt tensioner fitted. As this has a later kangoo aux pulley, the belt is tight to get on. Was struggling to get the aux belt on and holding tensioner, next thing bang goes the tensioner and the belt flys on. I was tempted to leave it but removed to inspect as didnt seem right.
Yeah thats fucked..buzzed the idler pulley off and refitted to the old tensioner which seems ok, and made the slot 2mm longer and belt flys on.
Anyway saga over, new kit on order and ill mod new tensioner to avoid same happening.
Onto the next job before cooling system is filled. It still has the oem spring loaded constant tension death clamps on the coolant hoses, and all were looking poor with the rad hoses ones looking terrible/rotten. Id seen these rust through and snap on the orange dci, so these needed to be done. They werent as bad as the orange one, but they had lost most of the tension so barely holding tight.
Pretty fcuked, luckily the dci runs cool so didnt give an issue. You could see where they had been weeping a little coolant around each one. Took rad hoses off to inspect as old car/high miler and noted a small split near hose clamp
Not through but no doubt would have made a bad day at some point. I did cut hose down and it still fitted, but remembered i had a set of hoses in the lockup off one i broke years ago.
Hose located and a better top cambelt cover as mine was about knackered.
Hose inspected, all good..fitted, new death clamps fitted from stock which i nicked from u pull it ages ago, fresh febi type d coolant filled and bled
Started totally normal and engine sounds a little quieter. Ran up to temp, dropped oil and renewed for fresh valvoline 5/40 and purflux filter as it was about due.
Took for a test drive, done 10 mile or so all good. Job jobbed, good until 300,000 miles hopefully.
