Recently bought a Ph2 172 with 19k miles on it for £7,800 from Daipac. It compares very well with my old 16V and Williams, but has the bonus of no problems or niggles. Not sure about moding one though - depends what you have in mind!
Hmmm...well, food for thought at least. I found that bigger wheels gave lots of grip, but it wasnt balanced by good damping from relatively higher profile tyres and was less progressive on the limit (on or off grip).
Lol - I think whatever I do has to be in the spirit of driving first.
I fitted larger wheels to my first two Clios back in the day (Mk1 1.2 and 16V), then found that the original wheels on the 16V gave way better handling... not to be confused with grip.
I dont think Id go for white wheels...
Im a real fan of the original look, but am not against the idea of raiding the parts bin to create a slightly different look for your car as long as they are parts designed for that car. Case in point: 16Vs look very good with Williams-style wheels (as long as theyre not gold, as that would be...
I think the Dynamique alloys (be they Ph2 or Ph3) look pretty decent. Id just recommend some lowering springs as theyre cheaper than new wheels and improve the look to a higher degree, while also actually also improving the handling somewhat. Ive driven a Ph2 1.4 Dynamique with lowering...
I would love to see something with the cult appeal of the Williams series - a real collectors item. I do love the 172/182 and V6 variants, but none have captured the essence of the Willy. ;) All marketing and minor details of course IMO - the substance of the 16V and Willys offspring have more...
Ive had a 16V, Williams and now a 172 Ph2. All great cars - I got a lot of perspective on our little "debates" over which is the best when taking time out from Clio ownership with a Fiat Coupe 20V Turbo.
Frankly, my 172 is just as good as I remember my Williams being - the big difference is...
Apart from the Ph1 172 Exclusive (which has full leather) and the Ph2 172 and 182 Cup variants (cloth), the 172s share the same leather/alcantara seats.
Im a real fan of the "original look", which to me can mean a lot of things - but usually its playing around with the parts of the performance models to make what suits my taste. For example, on a Clio 16V this would mean to me a choice of original Speedline wheels (Turbine, Vega or Willy)...
Dont worry - youll probably only get more financially sound as time goes on and then youll be able to treat yourself to another hot Clio. :D
Something to aim for!
My advice, Mark, would be to buy one from a forum member. Im sure your budget would secure one that is under 3 years old - meaning that youd have the balance of the warranty as peace of mind.
Id also have a good think about which one is for you. Theres no "right" choice, but as youll...
Lets say you owe £9k for the Cup and that a new 182 will cost £15k (including the costs of finance). The Cup would trade-in at £7k.
Therefore, you need to fund the difference between the £2k you owe for the Cup and its value.
Youll then need to finance the cost of the new 182. In...
Id be very careful about lowering a Williams, purely because the standard set-up is so well balanced between grip and give. The 16V and Williams ride relatively lower than the 172/182 anyway. I lowered my old 16V - but not my Williams - because I appreciated the tireless hours of testing to...
I bought a Ph2 172 last month and in the past had a 16V and Williams. £7,800 got me a very smart 02 example with 19k miles on the clock - I bought privately from a local Cliosport member.
I was also considering a brand new 182, 172 Cup and Ph1 172 (in that price order). In the end, the Ph2...
Torque, like power, weight, on-paper stats, weight etc doesnt mean much until you drive the car.
My last car had nearly double the torque of my 172, but it doesnt make that much difference on the road due to weight and the revs it comes in at.
The box and engine are pretty tough as long as the car is serviced properly.
Its the peripheral parts youve got to watch out for (e.g. engine mounts, bearings, rubbers etc), which tend to wear with age as much as mileage.
Good luck - there can be few better places for a Williams than the Alps!
Id suggest this:
Re-set trip computer
Drive very gently (as in 2,500rpm max, using accelerator lightly)
Get to a long dual carriageway or motorway
Stick to 55mph for about 15 minutes
See what your trip computer says
If its not well over 40mpg, you have a problem! (which would usually...
I think you need to reconsider your driving style!
I have a 172 and also regulalrly use my mums 1.2 16v and my other halfs 1.2 8v.
The 1.2 16v averages 45-55mpg, the 172 from 32-40mpg and the 1.2 8v doesnt have a trip computer, but seems the same as the 16v 1.2.
The 306 GTi is apparently right up there with the Williams...
...oh hang on a sec, why dont you just get the real McCoy?;)
If you want any specific and totally impartial advice from a 16V, Williams and Ph2 172 owner drop me a PM.
The first edition Williams used re-trimmed 19 16V front seats. At the time the Clio 16V still used its own seats.
In early 1994 the Phase 2 Clio 16Vs also got re-trimmed 19 16V seats and the Williams 2 & 3s seats remained the same as in the Williams 1.
5 GT Turbo front seats are different...
There are no quick or easy power gains for most NA engines. The inlet system and exhaust are pretty well optimised on the 172/182 (more so) in any case.
With a normally-aspirated engine like that of the 182 (i.e. non turbo/supercharger), the scope for "re-mapping" the settings for fuelling are limited. The reason that forced induction cars (i.e. turbos) see relatively large gains is that there is scope for larger adjustments to fuelling and of...
The pipe for the rear screen fluid draws lower than the one for the front wipers, meaning that you run out of rear fluid before you do for the front.
Thats how it is on the Mk1 Clios anyway!
