Id agree with the sensation of reduced speed in 5th.
Driving my 172 for the first time at 80+ leptons on the motorway, I was surprised to have to be reaching for 4th to get the full accelerative shove. Not sure whether thats due to the ratio and revs its turning over at those sorts of...
Guys - has anyone else seen the Evo test where they got the Mini Cooper S, Focus RS, Impreza WRX and Cup together?
Im not saying an RS isnt quicker, but looking at the performance figures they got there I think some of the talk about not seeing which way an RS went is a bit off.
My old...
I think its generally accepted that the Ph1 172 looks and drives a little more raw (esp. front bumper), but that the Ph2 was a major step forward for the interior.
People will tell you that the Ph1 is faster, but having myself had a 16V and Williams, I am not convinced that theres any...
Come have a look at my Ph2 172 Pete - Im local and will call you today. Cant make it today I dont think, but we can at least have a chat.
At the very least youll be able to see what your money gets you and then have a think whether it s worth:
a) Not having the extra toys on the Cups (172...
Too soon to pass comment on my 172, but my Williams got loads of attention. I remember some car following me, with the passenger getting a pic on their phone!
Just bought a Ph2 172 - very happy. Any niggles should have been sorted by the previous owner, given that they have a 3-year warranty. No inherrent problems as such...but inherrent niggles aplenty!
Still, the overall experience more than makes up for that - and most dont encounter problems.
I tried S2PTHs 1.4 16v Dynamique about this time last year, just when my mum was looking for a new car. It was quite quick - definitely more so than the 1.2 16v Dynamique my parents bought instead (much better deal at the time from Renault).
My other half picked up a 1.2 8v Authentique last...
Ive just come from a Fiat Coupe 20V Turbo to a Ph2 172 (Monaco Blue - really is the best...wait til you see it in the flesh).
Its an absolutely blinding car in the handling department. Ive had a 16V and a Williams in the past - and although I cant compare because of the haze of time, the...
Absolutely 100%
NO!
You asked for opinions - and heres mine:
It makes a fine hot hatch look like a done-up 1.2. Subtle mods are the way forward. Have you ever seen a "fashionably" modified car that looks good five years later?
Subtle and effective mods like a touch of lowering, a...
Ive owned a 16V, Williams and now a Ph2 172.
The handling is the 16V/Williams strength - and especially in the case of the Williams the speed thing is right up there with 172s. There seems to be a lot of variation with the F7P/R lump, as 1/4 times will attest.
Ive now bought a 172 - but...
Enid - I was saying to Dai on the test drive how surprised I was to find that the 172 felt similar to my old 16V and Williams. Probably down to the same design philosophy, some common parts and Renaults preferences for damping rates etc. The biggest differences I noticed over the two Mk1s were...
I read through all Dais posts to do with spinning off! It doesnt bother me as the damage was purely cosmetic (no panels) and it was fixed properly right away.
For those of you who dont know, Ive just sold my car and am returning to hot Clio ownership...kind of downsizing! (see profile for old cars). Ive put a deposit down on Daipacs absolutely spotless low-mileage Ph2 172 in Monaco Blue and will hopefully pick it up this coming weekend.
Thoughts...
In my experience, while they do identify the really obvious points, such companies also list a catalogue of other items that are enough to put you off any car - just to cover themselves legally.
Id ask if a knowledgeable forum member would be happy to view a car with you and buy them a pint...
It sounds to me Neil as if you want to restore your lust for your Cup - to get back that excitement and anticipation you used to get every time before taking it for a drive.
My honest advice would be to swap cars with your mum for a week (or anyone with a different car) and see how you felt...
The standard open induction kits do suck in hot air on a Valver/Williams.
I had a K&N on my 16V and then a Pipercross briefly on my Williams. I was only interested in the noise and I dont think you notice a dramatic loss of performance, except off the mark.
Actually getting a power increase...
Welcome :D
If its a Phase2 16V from 1996 then itll be Monaco Blue, which was also found on the Willy 3.
Sounds like youve got a very well priced car, but beware that rear arch. Its very cheap to cut out the rust and paint it up again, but it WILL come back unless you have a good job done...
I think I should invest in a Haynes manual.
Hopefully Ill have a Ph2 172 on my drive soon - and my mum and other half both have MK2, Ph2 Clios.
The Mk1 Haynes covered my old 16V (and more or less all of the Williams). Just wondering if Haynes manuals cover the 172 variants?
I think Infinicars philosophy is to find cars that would have otherwise been broken up - and then to sell them on or break at a profit that reflects their risk.
I dont think theyre really keen on buying/selling cars as a general rule. I get the feeling its just the odd car that is really...
