Just to follow this up, it was indeed the Alternator, the voltage regulators or some such. Also when I got it off, the windings looked black. and the whole thing stank like a house fire. All fixed now tho :)

I've narrowed down the choice of coilovers to 2x sets I think look good, but which are better/preferable ? I know the AP ones are £80/90 more but are they really £80/90 better than the VMaxx setup ? Any others I should be looking at for ~£450 or less ? AP APF Coilovers - £470.00...
