arrrrg!! gaitors!!

  Iceberg 172
Took my 172 in for a MOT today and it failed due to the CV joint gaitors being split. I only had that sorted about 2-3 weeks ago. I knew the car felt a bit ropey on corners over the past couple of days. The garage said they will re seal em etc but would it be worth trying to get new gaitors so this doesnt happen again in a while?

They also failed me for the crack in my windscreen.. autoglass are fixing it on wednesday at the earliest :x

Sounds like the people who fixed it didn't do it right it shoulnd't fail.
New gainters are £20 with new grease but there a pain to fit I'd juts get a new/replacment shaft gaints are a pin to fit unless you've the right tooling.

I just had my drivers side gaitor replaced as it was leaking due to the wrong clip being fitted to it. Cost me £80 altogether. Makes a right mess! Is prob worth having it replaced as you have no guarantee that it wont split again :)

I had my drivers side gaitor replaced about 3 months ago, i had no idea there was anything wrong with it untill i had my front tyres changed and the tyre fitter noticed that the gaitor had a large split and needed replacing.

Yay just to top it off i spoke to the garage about replacing them... £124 per side with labour. Also, if autoglass dont fit the new window in the early afternoon then they cant retest it till thursday because it has to sit for 2 hours.

Just put some tape over the splits, afaik MOT testers aren't allowed to remove anything from the vehicle so tht would pass :p

hehee too late now doh!

I could feel a bit of a difference when driving it though so in a way i'm glad that i'm getting new gaitors/gaiters whatever ;)

The worst bit is i have to get a lift to work with my brother in a crappy focus... When i get my RS back i will prob end up driving it like i stole it!

if i was you i would replace the for new ones. There not too hard to fit and you can take the drive shaft down to your local quick fit and they will remove the bearings and put them back on for you (iirc thats the only hard bit of the job).

Yeah i wouldnt mind giving it a shot myself but unfortunately its hard for me to find the time at the moment so i will have to bite the bullet and pay over the odds :(
