Clio 172 Cup - Track Project

  FRP - Clio 182
The FRP's look to sit really high, a bit like tractors tbh.

Yeah they do sit pretty high, but they are setup that way, to start messing with the ride height is to completely undo all the setting up that was done when they where first designed, tbh in the flesh they don't appear to look as high as in the photo.

Right then been a long time coming, but pay day arrived and i treated myself to you a few new bits and pieces

Seat was £165 delivered and the harness £114 delivered sub frame I had already purchased for £40.

So on to the fitting, I cut holes in the rear floor mat for the eyelets

I have still to fit the side harness's which I will be doing in the next few days

I have also been informed with regard to the locations of the shoulder harness straps is very dangerous as in an accident the straps can pull down and injury the spinal cord, they need to be fixed at no greater than a 45 degree angle, so I won’t be using them until I have the cage fitted so I can fix them safely. This image indicates the safety angles

Since fitting the seat I soon noticed that it sits about the same height as the standard seat which is far to high, I friend of mine has just sold his Clio RB 182 and has a difference style frame which sits lower which I have bought of him and will hopefully fit tomorrow.

Fixing plates arrived today so that I can fit the left hand strap to the turret. I will also be utilising the standard OE seat belt position for the right hand side.

Hacked the front grill for the tow strap

I forgot to get a photo with the strap fitted but it worked out pretty well.

I still need to get to the underside and fit the plates but they need adapting slightly in order to reach the bolt thread.

After fitting the new frame and resetting the seat the position is gratefully improved and is much lower:

Finally it feels like the driving position is spot on made the world of difference, went for a quick drive and it turned in to a half hour beating :)

There is a bit of a trick to get the angle of the steering wheel more horizontal with the use of some washers which I will be looking at doing next week.

Starting to come together:

Also this evening I have managed to source some Eibach pro line springs for just £68 delivered which are a lot cheaper than new at £130.

There are two ranges Pro line and sport line, sport line has a lower drop and is more for looks where as the pro line is for a better handling setup, I have also enquired about purchasing a new set of standard Cup shocks.

Few more parts have arrived, large washer to stop the dreaded knocking from the top mounts, eibach pro line springs front and rear and some bushes

I have also ordered a cage which is due next Tuesday Anybody have an idea of cost to have a half cage sprayed? And can anyone recommend anyone?

Also going to order a second set of front standard second hand calipers which I will strip down and also have powder coated.

Going to go for yellow finish on the cage and callipers as it should tie in nicely with the other small yellow Sabelt items I have.

Oh and I have also ordered a set of the following in yellow

As the cage has been ordered and will be powder coated yellow, I decided today to paint the callipers yellow to match, as I don't think I will buy a spare pair for a while to have powder coated.

As I wont be using the rear seat belt locations for the harness's, I have used them for the spare wheel straps, which look much better and is securing the wheel a lot better.

I am going to have all 5 wheels shot blasted and powered coated as its only £20 per wheel at Birmingham City Powder Coaters, can't decide if to stick with Anchrite or go with standard Silver.

I purchased this wrap for a few quid off eBay, as I was thinking I might wrap a couple of sections of the yellow roll cage, will trial it anyway to see what it looks like:

Received confirmation that my roll cage will be delivered tomorrow and I am hopeful that the brake ducts and a few other bits will arrive.

Few photos of both cars, both looking clean :)

I have also managed to purchase some PMS top mounts for £110 rather than £140 so really happy, as soon as the last set of bushes arrive I can then go and get everything fitted:

Shocks
Shocks rubbers
Eibach springs
PMS top mounts
Steering rack bushes x 2
Dog bone mount
Rear spacers

Should feel fantastic.

Are those genuine cup wishbones mate? Might get some for my cup instead of returning mine then pressing the bushes out and that.

Can you tell me what length harness eye bolts you got and whether they were long enough - I see you mentioned you have to adjust the spreader plates to reach the thread?

Are those genuine cup wishbones mate? Might get some for my cup instead of returning mine then pressing the bushes out and that.

Yes genuine set of cup ones from a lad on FB Clio page, delivered for £120 and can get you his details if you want mate. For the cost of them and not knowing the history of car I thought I would get a replacement set knowing they are true and fresh lower ball joints and bushes.

  FRP - Clio 182
Its the standard bolts that came with the harness, standard length from what I know, I can measure one for you tomorrow to confirm if needed.

I haven't adapted the plates as yet but will upload images to indicate how they need amending.

  182T
That would be great if you could let me know the correct length, I've got seats and subframes arriving over next few days so need to order eye bolts and plates. Good luck with the build.

Hi mate have you fitted the ph1 wiper stalk yet? I fitted mine and it didnt self cancel so i swapped the 'little white bit' with my ph2 wiper and now it catches when the wheel is turned. Massively annoying.
Let me know how you get/got on with yours... ta

So cage in, pretty straight forward to fit, had to remove both seats in order to get it in, initially I though that its wasn't a great fit however after some pushing and shoving I managed to get it in correctly.

I actually used the two ratchet straps to hold it in place whilst I drilled the holes and fitted the plates.

Really happy with the colour and tied everything together nicely.

Right so struggling to use mates ramp so decided to take on the work fitting all the new parts on the drive way, some what of a night mare but the majority of stuff pretty straight forward.

Car positioned and jack'd up,

4C92B675-FB3B-4688-9F64-74EE0E49F1D5.jpg

Needs to be a bit higher to sort the new shifter but was fine for making a start on the lower arms and bushes.

Should mention before making a start I drove up to mates work shop just so he could use a gun on the top mounts just to loosen them off

I have found out the reason for my braking issue, the calliper is seized on the inside pad, I will give them a really good clean up an try and get them back up to scratch , I have got a spare pair, that I intend on stripping and rebuilding when I get chance.

Started off by removing the lower roll bar bushes, tbh the existing ones weren't to bad

It was then on to the inner bush, now it was mentioned to me how much of a bugger these are to do but good god what a ****ing nightmare, it was hard enough getting the old one off, and near impossible to fit the replacement and do the bracket back up. I had to bend the bracket slightly ,use a ridiculous amount of grease and use a longer bolt to get it back on, took me over an hour to do, I am questioning if to do the other side as the one I actually took off wasn't in that bad condition.

If I don't replace it, I will get it done when next on a ramp, word of advice don't bother.

It was then on to the new shocks, springs and top mounts:

Remove exhaust in order to fit new shifter
Remove and replace dog bone mount
Replace the rear springs
Fit rear hub spacers
Fit replacement lower arms

Anyone advise on the use of spacers for the front? I have a set of 20mm spacers spare, would you recommend fitting, I know it will make the car tram line pretty badly as it did on my 182 but will I gain in handling? I will have the 10mm rear hub spacers fitted also.

Have you put the cage over the carpet? If so you need to remove and make it metal on metal.

Right few more bits done today, jacked up the rear of the car and removed the rear wheels as a local owner near me is taking a few sets up to Birmingham City Powder coaters so I have decided to get them refurbished as its only £20 a wheel.

I was facing some issues with the underside catching on the heat shields but the advice of the other owners was to try to re-shape the shields or just remove them all together, I managed to bend them in such a manor as to keep them and so they didn't rub.

Looking forward to using the shifter such great reviews from others who have upgraded.

Tomorrow I am hoping to fit the dog bone mount, rear spacers, rear springs and air filter, at which point that should just leave the lower arms, and refit the wheels once back from the powder coaters. Looking forward to the first trip out.

Took the Clio 182 for a drive this evening and I do hope the Cup drives as tight as its a great drive with the standard setup just with the cook sports springs, hoping for good things with all this work I have carried out.

Future plans:

Finish brake ducting and spray brake ducts black
Stealth exhaust with decat
Second bucket seat with additional harness
Refurbish spare front callipers and powered coat
Upgrade discs and pads
Fit flocked dash and flocked fan inserts (collect this Saturday)
Purchase new open face helmet
Get it on track and have some bloody fun

So I left the callipers off and tomorrow I will borrow the correct sized socket

Shouldn't take to long to change.

It was then on to the spare callipers that I have, I have started to strip them down as I plan on having them shot blasted and then powder coated in yellow at the same place that did my cage. Meaning that they won't corrode and will be easy to clean and maintain.

The pads that they came with are pretty much new, however unsure of the make, will clean them up and see if they have any markings on them.

So then whats left to do, well tomorrow I will have the lower arms changed and all bolted back up, will have the rear spacers on.

Then its a case of finishing off the replacement callipers, waiting for wheels to come back from being powder coated to refit, fit air filter and possibly fit the other nightmare bush which I am dreading but I know I should change it.

Oh and I also bought today some second hand braided lines for all four corners for just £25 delivered.

car looks great mate!
what kinda quality are those brake ducts and how do they fit? looking at getting some are they any good?

eBay job mate bit expensive for what they are as 3D printed but still good quality and a great fit. Will get you the link when I'm sober. They do three different types and 5 different colours from memory.

Want to improve the ECU location and have it lying down on top of the engine mount eventually, similar as to how its shown in the second photo, however the outer case needs to be removed as it won't fit when air box is back on.

Managed to get one of the lower arms off and swapped over, the ball joint was in a pretty bad way so glad I decided to purchase new arms, so that I know the inner bushes won't be an issue.

However on the passenger side I hit an issue, the bloody bolt just spins on the hub to lower arm, I am going to have to remove the hub and take to a friends garage and ask him to cut / drill it off. Really annoying.

So almost there now, just the rear spacer, hub bolt to remove and fit braided lines, then all the parts I have purchased will be on the car so as mentioned before really hoping for it to drive like new. Hoping to carry out more work this week.

I also purchased some DOT 4 brake fluid to refresh the system.

Hub removed off the car and need to take it somewhere to get the nut and bolt removed, open to suggestions at this point as the nut just spins as the thread has stripped off

Few more bits an pieces have arrived, as I have added 10mm to the read of the car I am also seeing how I get on with 10mm spacers on the front as well:

Then later on this evening I went to mates garage so that he could help me remove the pistons from the callipers and remove the pinch bolt on the hub / lower arm:

He recently purchased a Trophy that was damaged at Castle Combe, had an ARB fitted so I have bought it off him, saving myself over £60 from buying a new one:

He also had a spare front bumper arch, the one I'm missing:

The Trophy also has solid engine mounts and if they are in good condition, I will probably buy them as well.

Injury sustained

So tomorrow hoping to have ARB fitted and hub re-fitted.

Its really coming together now, wheels have been collected from powered coaters and are suppose to be looking excellent. Not sure when I will be collecting but hopefully in the next couple of days.

So at lunch time today I picked up the V6 Airbox, pipping and metal plate, needs some reshaping as it was damaged in the accident.

Picked up some replacement pinch bolts at local motor factors £2 odd each

Wheels dropped back off this afternoon really happy in the colour this time around as a lot brighter, led to believe that they are BMW shade - possibly Moonshine.

Right then on to some help, after fitting the rear spacer, the bolts no longer line up for the rear carriers? I have checked and the disc is going back on properly but can't seem to figure out what has changed, any advice please?

Tomorrow:

Finish Air box and metal plate, fit tyres and attempt to drill out stuck bolts.
