Clio 172 phase 1 turbo

  182/RS2/ Turbo/Mk1
This is what I've done but what power level do you think you could get to before this needs to change to an external pump/swirl pot set up?

I would have thought with the correct pump you would easily be able to do 500bhp on the standard swirl pot but I havent personally tried, but its very similar size etc to an escort cosworth one for example which will happily do that on just an uprated pump.

Dyno dynamics assumes 15 percent for fwd but maha reads it differently as includes an element of loss for the rollers themselves as well as the cars transmission.

never weighed it, slightly more than a standard ph1 I guess.

On a car I had dynoed recently (not Clio) I grossed 312rwhp and that translated back to 285rwhp after transmission loss.

I dont know what spec that is ?
Is a Holset HX35 too big a turbo (500hp +) to use on a conversion like yours.
Using a BEP .63AR housing a Holset will spool very quickly and has potential to hit 20psi by 2800rpm
..... but it has a big compressor!

Wouldn't be what I would choose. 500bhp on a .63 housing is likely to lead to high egts if used for big boost on a 2.0 engine.
Plus it would be a struggle to physically fit it, would have to be mounted over the box or something.

Good stuff, I'll leave the external pump setup for now then.

Hoping to have the car out again next saturday (27th) for the action day at castle combe.

Not got a huge amount to do to it, but sadly have been in india working the last couple of weeks and now stuck in london so wont get a chance to look at it till the weekend.

First job is I have some KW coilovers to swap the front to, and then get the Geo done again, then Ive got some Tarox 6 pots for it which I intend to fit, but I need to completely strip and rebuild them first as they havent been used for years and years, plus they need new balance pipes and to make matters worse one of the balance pipe nipples has been snapped off in the caliper.
Then its a case of mounting them on some custom brackets and fitting with some appropriate disks (going to try and use scenic 300mm ones)

If I cant get the brakes done in time (which seems likely now TBH!) then I will just have to order up some new standard disks and Ferodo DS or Pagid Blue pads I guess and fit those instead but I know that they wont take the punishment so its going to ruin my day a bit as I will have to go slower for the brakes to be able to cope.

Where do you get the .63 housing from? the HX35 is fooking huge. I have one bolted to my 20vt, but its on the 12cm housing, I'd like to get a .63 housing to be able to get the spool time down being a 1.8

sucks to be away and could'nt do anything on your car right? i'm feeling like this for over 3 months now and still have 4 weeks to go :(

however when i get home there'll probably be a whole pile of parts waiting for me :D

the counter now stands somewhere around 2500 for the 02m conversion but that includes everything like quaife diff, diesel fd's, flywheel, clutch etc. (quite a few bargains amongst them though)

Yeah man its a real pain, I did enjoy India but was an arse losing best part of 3 weekends on the trot, its already bad that im normally in london etc and dont get evenings, but losing weekends too has really put me behind!

Cool stuff, its a great way to go, if this car wasnt in such constant use and only intended to be a temporary one really I would have gone same route.

Who knows might just do it one winter when the car is off the road, although must say the rebuilt JC5 is coping so far, if I can get a season a go out of them its not worth me converting really.

i know it wouldn't make sense to you mate. however if you do feel like converting it don't hesitate to ask any questions!

i'm going to work on it like mad when i get back hoping i have it running again for a french meeting the 1st of June.
and maybe you'll see the oldskool sleeper at FCS if everything goes according to plan :D

Well Ive made some decent progress towards getting my big brake conversion onto the car, and ive also fitted some KW Variant 2 front coilovers.

The calipers went off to a friend who is a prototype brakes engineer for goodrich who normally works on WRC cars and the like so probably seemed a bit old school technology to him, lol.
He kindly rebuilt them for me, including cleaning up and regreasing all the pistons, cleaning up the threads and fitting new brake nipples and making some new balance pipes.
Need to give them back to him with one of the old lines so he can make me some new brake pipes and also I need one of the nipple threads helicoiling as one of them didnt clean up well enough just from running a tap down it, hopefully going to get that done later this week but am in the queue behind Msport at the moment so cant really complain too much about the timescales seeing as he's being doing it all
free of charge for me as a thanks for some mapping work I did on his competition pulsar a few years ago, its nice when people remember and payback favours.

Grabbed them back off him again for the week so me and my dad could finish handmaking the adaptor brackets to fit them to my clio turbo, using some drilled and grooved 300mm disks to replace the original 280mm (iirc) ones.

Excuse the fact the pictures show the pass side caliper on the drivers side, was just a case of only had the pass one caliper to hand at the time I was doing that bit as dad was using the other one while finishing off the second bracket and the wheel I had off was the drivers one. They are identical other than the balance pipe and bleed nipples are fitted the other way though so it makes no difference which one goes which side, you can set them up either way just by swapping the bits over, and likewise I know the spacer only had 3 bolts in, was only mocking up, none of these are finished pictures, will hopefully get those later in the week if I get a chance to do some more work on it, although got so many cars to map this week its actually looking like I might end up having to just whack the old brakes back on for combe perhaps.

Might need to go for very slightly bigger spacers to get a little more clearance but will see how I get on with it first.

  182/RS2/ Turbo/Mk1
Fcuk that's close! Looks awesome though.

Its about 1mm or so of clearance, must confess im not actually positive yet if that will be enough, will just try them during steady cornering and gradually increase load and see if I get any witness marks or not, because is on the bit of the wheel where it changes diameter (the very outer edge of the rim is a lot smaller) it means if I put an extra 5mm of spacing on I can gain a fair bit of clearance.

The willwood setup I ran on my XE corsa was pretty close, but probably more like 3mm rather than 1mm, so not directly comparable.

  182/RS2/ Turbo/Mk1
Considering the OZ F1 is so easy to buckle, you may need some bigger spacers lol ;)

Lol, luckily the bit they buckle on isnt the bit thats near the caliper, thats always the outer rim, this is close on the bit where the outer and inner rims join, the bit where it goes diagonal inside the wheel.

  182/RS2/ Turbo/Mk1
That's fag paper close!

Lol, its probably not greatly different to the spark plug gap, ha ha

I love this car more each update.

Thanks mate, still trying to keep it a nice useable road car so have only gone for a decent road suspension setup rather than putting racecar items on but should still improve the track performance a little, being set on having to use OZf1 15" wheels (to keep tyre costs down and cause we have about 40 of them already) has certainly made the big brake conversion more challenging to design but Im quite pleased with it so far. Lets just hope it works ok when its finished :)

Love the way your dad helps you as well :)

He's still surprisingly good considering he's into his 70s now :)

We love doing father/son car stuff together, although he no longer goes anywhere near actually driving the cars we've worked on, he reckoned it was "more than quick enough" when he last went in one of my trackday cars, and that was just a 1380cc mini, lol

  SJM'd197'dBTM'd 182
You should be able to get it stopped now with this setup.
But you will have to avoid your shortcuts across the infield, that gap is bloody small!

Picture of the passenger side which is now finished other than needing a brake line and the geo setting up:

This is the clearance if I run a 3mm spacer shim between the hubcentric spacer and the wheel:

Was without the spacer shim when you saw it earlier Dan by the way.

Is it sad im loving the fact my brake pads and suspension springs are colour coded yellow? lol

  182/RS2/ Turbo/Mk1
Added 3mm more spacing and its got a little more clearance now. Just been out bedding them in and all feels good so far.
Going to Combe on Saturday so can try them properly then as obviously if they do have a problem I would sooner it happen at a racetrack than on the road.

  182/RS2/ Turbo/Mk1
Just tried a not very scientific test to get a vague idea of braking performance, I got to approx 100mph, and then did my best to brake as I went past a point, to see if I could stop before another point 100 Meters later (100 meters from 100mph is what most sporty cars manage, 911 turbo, RS6 etc) and I appeared to be stopping a fair few meters short of the second marker although obviously I cannot guarentee how accurately I was braking on the first one or not.

This was of course done on a private off road test track and not using the 100 meter markers on an empty bit of motorway or anything naughty like that ;)

  182/RS2/ Turbo/Mk1
pmsl does it lock up at 100? :p

I pressed pretty hard but didnt do the stick my foot through the floor while pulling the steering wheel up over my head thing, but no it didnt lock at all, although I released pressure a little towards the end or it certainly would have at slower speeds.

p.s. got mine running today :D
Awesome news mate, going to be in it on saturday?
