Clio mk1 wheel offset

According to my Haynes Clio modding manual, this should be ET42.

I've searched around and a few websites are saying that the wheel can easily be + or - ET5-7. Is this always the case, even if lowering significantly?

Would a wheel with ET35 be further inside the wheel arches or stick out more than ET42?
