D11CUP RB182 project thread

  2004 Racing Blue 182
I've been up to RS Tuning today who drove the car and said it's definitely something in the gearbox, possible a bearing, possibly a diff bearing. Either way its a 'box out job and the car away for a week. Not the news I needed to hear if i'm honest.

Anyone ever had this before? Is it worth having it done, RST have quoted in the region of £700-£800, or trying to source another 'box?

It's times like this that make me regret buying an older car!

How much will it cost to swap cars? Even then you don’t know if the new car is a good one. s**t happens sadly.

Why I’m reluctant to sell mine. Sure it’s not perfect but it’s allways a gamble selling and buying another. That and I really like the car.

Imo @NorthloopCup is the go to guy.

I know, this is why I'm weighing up options. If I do sell, what do i replace it with? Is it gonna be a bag of s**t? Will i regret selling it - Yes defo!

I'm beginning to wonder if keeping it as a daily is no longer a viable option! Maybe look at fixing it, and using it as a toy?

Or, bite the bullet and sell it as is, lose money on it, then try and work out where to go from there!

I don't really want to sell it, like I said, I love it, If I do fix is and something else goes on it I'll be proper stuck then as I won't be able to afford another big bill like this!

ARGGGHHH bloody cars 😂

The frustrating thing is, other that the noise coming from wherever its coming from, the car runs brilliantly, handles beautifully and looks bloody awesome. It gets so many compliments from anyone that looks at it.

There are no other symptoms, doesn't feel odd, doesn't crunch gears, doesn't pull any-which way, just makes the noise!

Mannnn that's gutting....... and something similar I've just gone through myself. Have a look at the last couple of pages in my project thread and you can see the details. It's a tough choice what to do. In the last month, my car 'just' went in for a gearbox oil leak and ended up being a new gearbox!! There were broken teeth found in the oil but it didn't crunch, made no noise and drove perfectly same as yours. I was gutted.......... but went down the route of getting a replacement box, not a new one or a recon one (which is a risk) but was a lot cheaper bar the labour to fit it. My car isn't a daily however so a little different. The box I got was £200 + my old one in kinda part-ex so much cheaper and seems ok so far.

I dropped the engine oil a couple weeks ago yeah, why?

This is the gearbox oil @imprezaworks is referring too i'd imagine, if you drain the oil, if you get any teeth or metal filings etc etc come out mixed in, you know there's a big issue

Cheers dude. I’ll have a read through your thread.

I’ll get some box oil and drop the existing stuff and sift through it like you say.

100% do not sell the car because of a possible big bill. Either swap the gearbox or if possible have @NorthloopCup look at it. It might not be a £700 bill at the end of the day.
As you've said everything else feels spot on with the car selling would be a regrettable choice imo. I've had my 182 two years now as a daily and it's been reliable so far. Big bills seem few and far between on these cars as far as I can see.

Get the box oil changed. Mine used to crunch into 3rd sometimes then after changing the oil it never did it again

@NaplesValver ive just read your description - mainshaft bearing failing is my suspicion. Diff bearings don't fail in my experience.

Thanks mate. To be honest it would be difficult to get a video of the noise. It would be hard to differentiate between road noise, engine/exhaust noise and ‘the noise’.

Until it's opened up it's difficult to say with 100% conviction, but I'd be genuinely surprised if it wasn't the mainshaft bearing/bearings.

If I need an excuse to change I just wait until it costs money. Then spend more to get a different car. Man math

So, I’ve had a chat with a couple people, my wife included, they all echo your comments, keep the 182 and sort the ‘box. Selling up and buying something else is daft!

So, anyone got any recommendations on where to take her for surgery? (The car, not the wife) [emoji23]

RS Tuning are moving premises so aren’t taking on mechanical work at the minute. Otherwise that would’ve been my choice.

Close to West Yorkshire preferred but will travel for the right service.

Dude, change the gearbox oil before making any big commitments (ie dropping it off to have the box removed).
You said yourself it's not affecting the drive-ability of the car (yet), so no need to hit the panic button. An oil change is simple enough and cheap and may just solve the issue - even if it just gives you another 1000 miles or whatever, might as well get the most out of the box whilst it still drives well.

Just about to order some oil now mate. I’ll drop it next week and see what’s what. Like you said, may remedy it for a bit whilst I find some cash from somewhere for the box rebuild.

Polish John in Selby.

He’s not a specialist but he’s polish and is cheap.

His name isn’t actually John but his actual name is too much for the people of Selby so they’ve settled on ‘polish john’.

Either way its a 'box out job and the car away for a week. Not the news I needed to hear if i'm honest.

For convenience sake, as Doncaster is not that far from Huddersfield, & it comes with a warranty, this might be an attractive deal.
If it can be done same day, which most clutch specialists offer, I don`t see why a box change should not also be done same day.
It would also be short sighted not to replace the clutch at the same time?

The 129 is the same box as the 130 in your 182, though the speedo drive will be redundant.

Another possibility is to source a box & get a quote for a quality clutch replacement locally, replacing the box at the time, as labour charges are quite competitive in the replacement clutch market.

Unless the noise your box is making sounds like your riding on the Underground, it will probably soldier on for several thousand miles, though as has been said, it decrease the chances of it being repairable.

I`m firmly in the fix it rather than change the car camp.

Lol that'll be the one @182_steve is still waiting for!

Yep, probably is! Unless you take your car to them and get them to fit it (which is a different matter) do not buy anything off that lot, absolute bunch of clowns and the reason the car was off the road for 3 weeks and not 1, faffing about with their empty delivery promises - ended up getting one myself and had it within 24 hours.

@STEVE.M has made some very valid points there, i'm only talking about the company in the eBay ad - Renparts!

Thanks all.

Defo keeping it, not in any doubt now [emoji23]

Went to my cousin’s 21st birthday party, drove the car from West Yorkshire to Southport, drank lots of beers, gave the keys to my awesome petrolhead wife. She drove us back to Preston. Like she f**king nicked it [emoji23][emoji23]

She bloody loved it. Made me realise how good this car really is. Totally different perspective from the passenger seat. Especially as she was taught to drive by her dad, who teaches police pursuit drivers.

She had a massive smile on her face the whole way back to my parents house and even said she wants to drive it back across saddleworth when we go home.

God I love my car. And my wife [emoji23][emoji23]

And no, I won’t post pics of the wife [emoji23]
