dealer put wrong oil - will it do any damage?

Just had my 24K service. Noticed they've put in 10W40 instead of 5W40 as per the book. I'm going to complain but will it damage my car in the meantime? F*cking useless.

They're also quoting £125+VAT for PE2 tyres each. Isn't that a bit steep?

The oil will not be an issue in the slightest. 10w40 is quite the norm from a dealer! :dapprove:

As for the tyres, that's about right from Renault but they can be had for less than £100 a corner elsewhere. Do a search it's been coverd hundreds of times mate.

10-40 is the correct spec along with 5-40 etc theres loads of oils you can use.

Be careful the dealer can tell you your wrong demanding they chnage it for another oils as the engine is allowed to use the oils only exception is the temps drop below -20 degrees c which ins't going to happen.

Techs dont sit there all day reading people's service book looking to see what the oil grade is. They use the oil thats in the pumps (10w40) as thats all thats supplied. Wont cause any probs, it just aint the best oil to use..

Doesn't make any difference realy. You might be able to tell after say 250k after a life of short cold runs but thats all.

Yea im not sayin you'l notice any diff.. but the oil outta renault pumps is 10w40 semi synthetic...so not the greatest. And a 250k f4r would probly be rattling its tits off anyway, no matter what oil used!

A 'manual' is guidance by it's very nature mate. As edde says it's the spec that governs what we can/cannot use.

Tosh. It's not in the manual - it's in the service (maintenance) book which is the record the car is properly maintained and hence SPECIFIES the schedule and what work is to be carried out. Anyway, I shall be taking it up with them

it's going back in for warranty work anyway. I'm sure you're right that in reality in makes no difference, put if you pay a premium to get a Renault stamp in the book the least they can do is carry out the service as per the book

The majority of renaults serviced at a main dealers are the 1.4's, 1.6's and 1.9.diesels etc, so the oil out the pumps is for those cars.. its only really the turbo diesels that renault insisted u used different oil (5w30 iirc). They wont stock 5 different grades of oil, hence u getting 10w40.

The best thing to do would be to supply your own oil if its that important, and get some knocked off the service bill.

They could put anything in the actual engine, then just invoice it as 5w40 for less hassle

The service book isn't as I'd said the rules. There right within there rights to use that oil.

They have the service manaul says you ca use it (which you don't have).

Your point being ? Even seen how much a garage costs to run how muhc people want how efficiently they work how much they cost to train to get the PC's tools ramps taxes pensions company tax etc or how difficult it can be to keep truly accurate start and end times for jobs.

I guess you aksed for price before you booked it in in which case you should have though before letting them work on your car.

Lol Mine gets the cheapest 5-40 I can find! about 13 quid a gallon last time I checked! Pukka stuff (well engine doesnt burn any anyway!)

And my point remains if the book says 5w40, then that's what they should use. If they could use other grades, then the book shouldn't be specific. Anyway, I politely asked the dealer to check and they said they had used the wrong grade and would change it.

Lol, how did he check what grade was in it? How do you know they'll do it?
They will say leave it here & we'll do it, then probably not bother. Unless you stand over them while they do it, you won't know.
