Detailing Chat & Questions Thread

If you have tape and everything I'd be getting the AF pads and polishes on the 3for2.

I need to buy some more tape anyway, so not too fussed about that. Any reason why you'd get that?

Oh yeah, the other thing was, there are no AF spot pads. Which would be pretty handy to have.

I don't think you will have to use the pads with the polishes just like with all the other manufacturers so spot pads doesn't bother me. I've also always been put off by the way the microfibre kit aggressively removes the top coat, I wouldn't want to really use one without a paint depth gauge.

Also it annoys me with the mess kit that you pay £19 for two of the pads and they explode very easily.

Not that I've used either before, but I don't think you'd need the EZ Glaze after Amigo. The finish Amigo provides is stunning.

I gave my girlfriends car a quick decontamination polish and protection today.

i washed it while the ironx worked on the wheels (what a state they are)*
ironxd the bodywork
pressure washed off
quick once over with a microfibre to dry it a little
tardis
agitated the tardis after a few mins
Pressure washed then washed off

The snow got too heavy at this point so I went in for an hour

came back to clay it... Sweet Jesus the paint was still absolutely covered in s**t. Did I do something wrong? The car is 12 years old and has probably never seen more than a sponge in its life so did it probably need another hit or ironx and tardis?

Heres a few before and afters

Does anyone recognise these wheels? Afaik they don't come on the 206 Roland Garros which my girlfriend drives. I was going to buy some new ones rather than refurb these as they seem like they'll need loads of work to put right.

Am i right in thinking this discolouration mark is from bird s**t being on the car too long? Took ages to polish off lol

I'm currently using (in this order): Prima Amigo, Z2 then Z8 and getting decent results.

Should I add anything into the mix?

Nope, perfect mate. You could buy a wax for after Z2 but then you wouldn't use the Z8. You would use Z6 or a carnauba style spray. Vics QD etc.

Knuckles, sometimes it just take more than one go at the decontamination stage. I have a 12 year old focus to try and sort for a mate next week. It will eat clay bars like made no doubt as it literally feels like the paint has been rollers on, I've never felt paint like it.

Ah, cheers :) it shouldn't need doing for a good while now anyway. But I'll keep that In mind

AF Soul. Is it any good?

Looking to try a new wax and seeing as PB have 3 for 2 on the AF stuff, it'd be rude not to make an order. The Soul would be my limit on what I'd want to spend on a wax tbh at the moment. Any reviews of it? Good for the Sunflower?
It's about time I tried something other than Dodo Juice ;).

I can't comment in Soul from personal experiences, but it seems to go down well over on DW.

I no you said you want to try sonetging other than a DJ product, but have you tried Bouncers 22? Very good value for money wax.

What's the best method to clean my wooly mammoth drying towel? I think I remember someone suggesting to put it into the washing machine, but without using any products .

knuckles, if the tar is that bad, after the first hit and dwell of the tar remover, spray the panel again lightly, then mist a mf applicator and gently wipedown the panel before rinsing off

No, but I'm sure it's a WINNING formula.

Are you all winding me up? lol

It's flat white with no lacquer. The most reflective and purest paint there is. If there the qualities you like about it, then you don't want to put a light absorbing wax on. It's not meant to look deep, although it can do if you use a yellow wax such as most carnauba. That probably means you didn't want a flat white car though, because your changing it. Hardly noticeable on colours, but not ideal for making the most of a white car. Flat white non lacquered cars are separate from coloured cars when it comes to products. If you want the white to stay white and to stand out, you want very little on the car. Then it can be blindingly white. Around 93% reflective.

Mr Sheen is my product recommendation. It's a degreaser with high silicone content. It will lower reflectivity but that light capture makes it look more shiney than it actually is.

I used to go mfn every week. hundreds of cars. It was well established that robs car shined the best. Dusters would slip off it. Product heads would spend hours getting near the finish he got in a few mins. Only stopped from using robs product them self's through internet scaremongering. It's safe enough for high grade furniture though, it won't hurt paint. It even says so on the can.

Forget everything I have said now. Just get the stuff from under the sink and try it somewhere inconspicuous. Judge for yourself it you like it. It's no hardship.
Not sure if srs?

As you said, I usually wash my drying towels on their own and with no detergent, I then wring dry and leave to dry in the airing cupboard.

I've got AF desire for sale on here just incase anyone hasn't seen it.

If it doesn't sell would anyone be interested in some samples? What size samples would everyone like?

I'd take a sample, I'd also pay a little extra and take the pot too.

No problem Matthew.

How does a 25ml sample sound? I think its quite a nice size as you'll be able to get quite a few layers out of it.

I can do any size so anyone thats intrested in this just let me know what size you would like.

If 25ml is good for everyone I'll source some pots and sort out a price.

Any advice on maintaining the slight orange peel effect on the paint? ( Fairly recently sprayed LY Caterham)

  Twingo Dynamique
Maintain. When the car is next in the sun... and the garage dust removed, I'll get a pick to show it. It isn't deep, quite subtle across whole car. Tbh I've never noticed it, but i remember when i was in the paint shop one guy asked our painter if he was gonna polish it real smooth and he was like, no i like the slight orange effect. :S

If it's remove, wet sand.

edit: you can't maintain it as such. Just put a few heavy coats of lacquer on. That'll make it proper peely. f**k knows why anyone would like it.

  Twingo Dynamique
But it's maintain... so I'm guessing a decontaminate, very very light clay?, seal then wax to keep the paint looking nice...??
