do you stick to 18,000 mile oil change intervals

  172,scenic, trafic
All my renaults have these intervals, I always change the oil myself mid mileage ie half way between the renault services as a precaution. Now I'm thinking that's hassle with three vehicles. So what's best, supply the best oil I can when they are done at renault or carry on changing the oil myself with a decent oil 9,000 after the dealer service

18k intervals apply to non sport renault vehicles. Renaultsport's have a 12k interval. Most reputable specialists recommend an oil change every 6k

172 is 12k isnt it? :S

I used to change my oil 6k/6 monthly in the 182.

Yes I no its 12000 on clio but I couldn't be bothered to explain that.lol. my van takes 8 litres of oil, scenic over 5 and clio the same so its starting to get a bit wearing to be honest. I would rather pay out for top oil every 18,000 than change it every 9,000 if it does no harm

why not just switch to a 12k interval and stick to it? I dont like leaving oil in for as long as these intervals suggest

Well the scenic is still under warranty and I don't want to line my dealers pockets anymore. It's taken two years to get them to put a new gearbox in it next week and we aren't exactly friends! The trafic does probably have near to yearly intervals anyway. Is a cheap oil that much worse than a dear one? I tend to use fully synthetic anyway

you know you can use anywhere that uses genuine parts don't you? ELF oil (which we sell and have on offer currently) is what renault use, top quality, and not expensive

Yes I did no but as the bloody scenic wears out rear pads every 18,000 miles and apparently only renault dealers can change them its a pain to keep changing garages. Cornwall isn't exactly blessed with a huge choice of garages either. I have seen your oil offer and might well order from you when I get the time . I just want the bloody thing to get the box sorted and can worry about the services then

the brakes thing is most likely refering to the electic handbrake. Some other diagnostics systems allow you to deactivate this, but it can be done by just running the engine while you wind the pistons back. Not surprised Renault told you they're the only ones who can do it tbh.

I did an oil change today lol, but mine uses 1litre per 1000miles, so its constantly being topped up, i generally do it ~12-15k, its got 120k (70 which is mine) on the clock mind you, oil is always black as hell. I use halfords fully synthetic 5w-40, with it using oil all the time, i dont bother with expensive oils.

Are you winding me up?lol.
It went in for its first service and they said because it has 50/50 front to rear braking effort the rear pads were worn out. I said that sounds like crap but you better do it.200 quid later I nearly fell over.200 for changing pads? They said it had to go on machine so that why expensive. Surely if you wind the pistons in with it running the abs will kick in?

Always try and keep my oil changes to every 6k just for a piece of mine if I'm being honest. I use the Fuchs Titan fully synth 5w40 opie oils sell it cheap

6k or 6 months whichever is sooner. Just did mine today actually, I have got some gulf competition 5w 40 in it now

I don't like changing oil any later than 6,000 miles. My truck has an oil change every 3k!

It costs £20 labour and the bits cost about £40 on line.

I keep my trafic going using genuine parts from ebay. Costs nothing to run.lol. but worrying about oil change frequency now its hit 80,000 miles

First, I think mine was just after the troublesome ones. To be honest its not had one thing go wrong with it. Had it since new. Only thing that worries me and again this is oil connected is it has a timing chain, hence oil frequency worries

It's a 07 2.0 dci, been to Chester in it several times, got me through the snow lots of times, never let me down. It would appear its the later gearboxes that are bad judging by the scenic

I've had 3 trafics pre 2006. (51 plate, 02 plate and now got a 52 plate) all have had new boxes. My current one is away at the minute having it rebuilt.

Great vans though, infinately better than a transit. So comfortable.

Couldn't agree more, if I need to in anywhere its usually in the trafic. Goes well, comfortable as you say, quick enough to get me six points so far, starts first time every time. No lots of plumbers that have had trannys, useless
