Dr Jekyll's Ph1 172 Progress Thread

  172 Cup & Mini C 1.6
Nice and grippy Kyle, I worthy upgrade on my old pe2's for sure.

Geo was done by Stortford Performance in Bishops Stortford. I took my old BG there and also my ph1 when I first swapped the suspension over and they was decent to deal with so I thought I'd go there again. Service was spot on again with communications, process, etc.

Next thing is to get the car sprayed. Going to wait until the cheque comes through and clears. Gives me a few more weeks to save a bit more. In the mean time I will buy a new headlight. It's a risk buying 2nd hand ones and the majority have knackered lenses. Spoke to Renault and they recommended me to go to Euro Car Parts as they are exactly the same, due to OE spec and noticeable cheaper!

Have ordered some bits for the ph1 like clips and stays for when the bonnet gets sprayed.
If u need anything from ECP let me no as kays mum works for them so ill get it cheaper

Good to see things are coming together dude, its a lovely example mate and it will get there in the end.

Great to see this car being put back to the immaculate standard it was.... it will be so worth it in the end ; lovely example of a PH1.

I thought i had replied

Thanks guys. Its not immaculate but it is well kept. Over time i would like it mint but that'll take time. Hopefully once its painted it'll look much better.

So following on from my revving issue on the link i posted, i believe the fault was due to the idle control valve. Throttle bodies and throttle position sensors were swapped, breather filter had a ally joiner fitted as it was a rubber end going into the breather pipe so lots of flex, removed the vacuum pipe off the inlet and refitted it and general cleaner of all parts and plugs.

When i removed my ICV to clean up i noticed that it was pushed in. Upon inspection I noticed that it doesn't spring back smooth. (the shaft compresses when the throttle is pressed and releases when the throttle is released.)

Also turned out the the threaded part of the bolt was slightly bent. So I straightened it up slightly, being careful as it doesn't seem that strong, and re-greased it all up and put it back together. It was still not perfect (which I think was due the sliding side of things) but it was much better. Next day i ordered a new one from Renparts with next day delivery. It turned up on friday so friday evening i got it fitted.

Idles as it should, drives as it should apart from one time that I put it in neutral when coasting and the revs fluctuated a bit. Maybe the car needs to adjust itself? No horrible 2k revs when stopped though. I drive 15 miles to work so i'll see on the journey if its all sweet. Fingers crossed. Could be placebo but it seems more responsive on the throttle too.

Coolant had dropped so i gave it a top up

I've also started to collect some parts all ready for when the car gets painted. Having the ally bonnet fitted i knew that the clips would all need to be removed so i got new ones from Renault. I managed salvage my excellent condition stay from my old bonnet too.

19989556055_036fb0f4e0_z.jpg

The BC coilovers that i run come with damping adjusters on the top of the struts. I like to keep these on as its easy to adjust to different setting if i fancy it soft for a nice drive or harder for a more fun drive. These are removable but knowing my luck i'd either lose them or have them in the glove box/ash tray and break the stems so i keep them fitted. The downfall is that they rub slightly on the underside of the bonnet. I did not want this on my newly painted ally bonnet so i decided to cut a hole where the adjusters rub.

Both holes will be finalised and neatened just before paint. Next thing to get will probably be a new headlight. I'm getting a front bumper off @Daniel at CSS and @Sunglasses_Ron is taking back to Essex for me so once i pick that up i'll get that fitted and then wait for paint :)

I'll be at CSS so im looking forward to the event. Me and my GF are driving up and staying in a hotel on the friday evening, then at the show saturday and camping saturday evening. Looking forward to socialising with everybody :)

I sorted out the idle/rev issue. Turned out be be a slight leak around the throttle body. Took the body off and it turned out the gasket had broken. The next day i ordered a ph1 throttle body gasket from Renault for next day delivery.

So the next day i set to get it fitted - Having the induction kit not only releases the inner chav, but also makes the engine bay so much easier to get to things over the standard airbox and bend. Throttle cable and bend off:

Removed the old gasket and gave the throttle body a clean:

A few spare throttle bodies that ive collected!

All fitted and back together:

The next day i gave the clio a clean ready for CSS. Started off with a coffee and then gave it a wash, polish and wax. All by hand as i dont own a machine polisher. Came up pretty good tbh. The wheels have marks on them so they ideally need a refurb to get mint, but that'll be a job for next year.

Had an awesome time and it was great to catch up with some old faces and meet new guys. Was great to finally meet @DieselDavis @dann2707 @Don @james24785 amongst many others. Was a total crack and i look forward to next years! While i was up the @Daniel bought up a ph1 bumper that i had bought off him and @Brian bought it back to practically my front door. Top chaps

Once the bumper was back home i removed the splitter as mine is in better condition and gave it a clean.

I'll keep it here until the clio goes into the body shop. Today i took the car to work as i wanted to tackle a few jobs, plus i went in to fit some brakes on a Jaguar for a friend. Once the brakes were done i moved my car up on the ramps. My jobs i wanted to do was adjust the handbrake as it was a little slack and pulled up too high, Re-align my exhaust and fit my other sprayed gear knob that i've had a while.

First job was to cut off the old rusty bolts and clamps and replace with new ones:

20222355300_95a73c662f_z.jpg

I then dropped the exhaust and cat, and the removed the heatshields to get access to the handbrake adjuster and gearknob:

20416858871_13b5ff539a_z.jpg

Took a quick pic of the sump and gearbox underside too and then adjusted the handbrake:

20224081009_48bfcc4ff0_z.jpg

After that I fitted my painted gearknob:

20222768488_4b0836ed27_z.jpg

After that i started to put it all back together, realigning my exhaust as i did so and giving parts a wire brush clean and then gave everything thats bolted or clamped some copper seal grease.

I also got @Kyle 86 to order me a new headlight which arrived quickly so today i picked it up from hes house. Was good to catch up and see he's clean cup

I didn't think and tbh I just wanted it sorted asap. At least with new I knew it would be piece of mind.

How comes your getting rid of all your extras and spares?

Glad you've sorted the idle out buddy, looks like good progress on getting the car looking fresh again too!

I've now got an idle issue but I think it's throttle cable or body as it's only mild and you can feel through the pedal the cable not retracting like it should

No worries mate glad to help. Good to see you as always mate. Car looks great as always. Got the hubs painted just in the nick of time. Well happy with the difference :)

True! I don't plan on owning another Clio, plus new house probably won't have a garage to store it all. Saying that I've thrown over half my spares the past month lol

What's happening then Dan? Text me if you prefer.

Got any bits I might want/need? If your throwing them out etc, they could go to a good home! ;)

Bought a mondeo so thought i best sell my car, mondeo was a steal as my dads ex company car.

Selling house, buying a box.

If the person who buys the car doesn't want spares I'll give you a shout! Bits I threw out were bits that weren't expensive and I've had ages, nothing exciting

All plugged in and adjusted. Need to get some new bulbs next as I broke one of my Cree sidelights. It's still works but the end is loose so I will order some nice led ones.

I'll order some new headlight bulbs too as well. I currently have some mtec super white ones which are nice and bright and give good length but they still seem yellow like my old nightbreakers. I might try a blue bulb instead of a white bulb. I'm hoping that that will give off a white-ish look and not yellow. @McGherkin Views on this? Would it work?

Ha, the first set of Dual Optics I ever had for my 1.2 had those black surrounds!

As for the bulbs, yeah, something like a Phillips Bluevision will give you a white light, but why not HIDs?

I had HID's but they flickered. I could go them again (a different set) but i don't like the fact that if a bulb does go that i wont be able to pop into halfords for a quick replacement. The original setup is easier. Plus it's extra wiring in the bay that I don't really want.

I want the HID look without HID's lol.

I don't mind if the blue bulbs aren't fully white but have a blue tint. I just dont want them to through yellow through the headlight.
