So last night I picked up a mk1 MX-5.

Its quite scary being so low on the motorway and I genuinely mistook an A3 for a Q7!!

I am not sure about the fog lights so I think they are going to go, other than that I am just going to enjoy it!

Mk.1 are fairly safe for rust... compared to a Mk2.5 anyway.
If it's an import, make sure it's had undersealing done when it landed on our shores, and then you're good to go.

Agree with the front fogs, look utterly waff on any 5 other than the 2.5 & 3.5

enjoy it fella, the running costs are the same as Clio territory except that instead of belts every 5 years, you should budget for a sill & wing respray instead (between £400 and £1000, depending on the level of rust)

The lad i bought it off said it wasn't an import and all the dials etc are in MPH. The indicators are on the right hand stalk which is a pain!

I am going to take it to the MX5 specialists down the road for a once over though just to check it out.

This. How come you decided to sell up the bmw si?

Should have kept the 172;)

I wish I could sell the BMW, no one wants it ffs.

The beemer was nice and comfy and could be fun if you tried but the amount I am driving at the moment I just wanted a purely fun car.

Import then, all imported RX7's have this too, works well after a while, the dials are an easy conversion. makes little difference though, and it has the Mazda Eunos Badge on the front which is non UK spec iirc, still very nice and doesn't change anything. Insurance might ask though.

UK ones had indicators on the right hand stalk too

Front Badge is also just a Mazda Badge, not a Eunos one.

Looks like a late UK car to me.

Awesome, thanks for clearing that one up :)

Looks good though! Lose the fogs and get an Import plate holder and plate IMO. Some sort of Splitter always neatens up the front end. I had a Fabia one on mine - the one that everyone puts on their Clio's. Looked better than without one - perhaps not as good as an OEM one or a GV one, but then it's not £100+! lol

Need any help with it, give me a shout - I pretty much built one. lol

That looks quite good, a trip to skoda is imminent. And I like the import plate holder I reckon it looks way better, so thats another thing...

Thanks for the offer and I will be in touch if I need any help but I am hoping to not do much to it until the middle of next year really.

Joey Knows.

It's their old "Eternal Flame" badge, as seen on MX-6, MX-3, 323, 626, Xedos & RX-7

And yes, indicators are on the right, standard.

Plate relocators are full of win, to tidy up the nose. I'm trying to find a solution for Listerine, but the only ones I can find come out of USA and I'm not convinced that they'd be seen favourably over here.

You should be able to get an OEM lip from a breaker (search for "MX-5 revive", Brian has all sorts of little treasures), rattle-can it in black and you're sorted.

Wish I could drift...well, hold a slide anyway, for when the back steps out when I'm clipping apex's (y0!)

A pain to get used to but a bonus once you're there, no? You can change gear with the left hand, steer & indicate with the right. Personally it's always made more sense to me on manual RHD cars.

Yep this is true, and changing gear is lovely, the best gearbox I have ever used!
