How long does it take a 182 to de-ice windows?

Just seen MarkR's media thread with a photo of his frozen Clio.

It got me wondering how long it takes for the 182's to de-ice the windscreen? This will be my first winter with the Clio.

Mine is running a decatted Milltek so not the noisiest of systems, but my neighbours tell me it is still "quite loud" and I don't want to upset/wake them by defrosting it for 10 minutes at 5am when I'm working dayshifts.

Should I invest in some de-icer or are they quite good at clearing the screen within a few minutes?

Why not scrape it/de-ice it then maybe start it and drive away? It is after all the quickest way to bring it up to temp.

Takes me 15 seconds to defrost mine

Take one 5 litre jug of LUKE warm water and tip over all the glass and front lights

Wipers on straight away

Job done drive off.

I dont care what people say, this will never crack glass

f**k scraping ice and spraying deicer all over the paintwork

Not a 182 but this morning I turned on my 197, blasted the blowers and pressed the defrost button, scraped passanger window, front window round to the back, by the time I got there the rear window was almost clear, I was shocked lol

I've not used a scraper and de-icer in years either. Nasty stuff.

Bit of luke warm water. Been using it for years, oh and heated windscreens ftw iirc!

2 coats of G1 on the windows makes sure nothing sticks that much anyway.

A sheet is a good idea. I've used it in the past to good effect.

Less than 30 seconds.

It makes you wonder why all cars can't have heated windscreens.. My last car and old t reg focus I paid £800 for had 1! Mind you I can't even use the rear heated screen on the meg as they tend to go pop!

Ford own the patent for it IIRC.

P.S. my 182 has a heated screen ;).

I think recently Ford released a patent for it but don't quote me on that or they sorted another way to do it but all the Ford Group cars have them usually.

Even a 1986 Escort had one. Genius idea.

I do laugh at the silly people scrape-scrape-scraping away at the ice as my bottle of water warms my hands and the glass, then off I drive...

De-icer is awful stuff but I guess moderately handy in an emergency.

I estimate there to be another 12 threads of this sort before the end of the month.

I do tend to just run mine for ten mins as it had a turbo.. And it's warm to get into and I live in the middle of nowhere in the shires and you can't see my car from the road.. If I lived in a town I'd never risk it. Insurance won't pay out either..

Especially in Blackpool..

Haha, you have been watching "999: Whats Your Emergency" then?

I'm not keen on de-icer, but I'm not keen on scraping the ice off for 5 minutes either so its either this or

Stick a sheet over the windscreen mate!

Seen Fords do it in 2 minutes flat. As you say, genius idea!

The Mondeos quickclear were the quickest i've seen! Seconds and it melts away.

f**k scraping off ££'s worth of glass sealant for no reason! 30 seconds does mine in the morning.

You weren't on it where you?? I have been to Blackpool.. Once was enough though lol..

Was good on my focus even though only half of the screen worked. Was the drivers side though.

Not guilty no! A friend of mine played pool against some guy who looked like a smackhead that appeared on one of the first episodes though. Thats about as much of a claim to fame that I have.

Cracked windscreen FTL

Cold water to de-ice the windows.

I have never ever, cracked a windscreen in over 30yrs by using WARM water to defrost a windscreen, boiling water yes it will do.
It also helps it to not steam up inside as well.

To use warm water successfully on the windscreen the wipers must be switched on immediately after using or the water will just instantly freeze onto the window,

You will all see what i mean if you try it on your car now....

Spot on. I've not had quite as much experience, but you'd have to be a fucktard to crack a screen. It's to melt the ice, not make a cuppa tea.

I did it about 20 mins ago. 1.5 litres of warm water over the front screen and side windows, no wipers. Walked in to put the kettle back and walked out, still fresh as a daisy.

In my 1.2, I just turn on the front and back screen blowers on, go back inside and have breakfast for 5mins (Gate is closed, and i'll see if someone is opening them, as i'll be out faster than they can reach the door handle), come out and the car is fully defrosted and quite toasty inside.

Job done.
