Jekyll's RB182 Progress Thread

So when all this work is completed, it truly will be as good as everyone thinks it is...……. you've always been very honest about the car mate but all this paint work will put it right back up there :D

Can't wait to see this finished with new paint, it's going to look great, how long do you think the paint will take? Sorry if I have missed where you have said this already ?

Done more bits over the last few days.

Rear bumper removed

And the front bumper all split

The front grill clip has snapped on the top. Never noticed it before. Am contemplating getting a new grill as this one has been sprayed. TBF its held up well and looks decent still but the crack has made me ponder on getting it replaced with a new one. Will contact Paul off RPD about a small list i have.

This weekend i decided to remove the bonnet and make a start on the prep work. Steve @MrBlonde wanted to come down to fit he's new front splitter and Will at work was tinkering with he's R26.

You can see in this shot the difference in shade between the door and the rear quarter.

Back at work on sunday morning to prep the bumper. It had a few number plate holes in prior to my ownership, so i taped up the front and fibreglass fillered the rear (will need sanding down at a later date) then flipped it over, removed the bumper stickers and DA'd the front in 180, 320 grade before adding some filler for the scrapes/scuffs and chips and blocking it down with 320 again.

Cracking progress @Dr Jekyll , you’ve put some hours in mr . Will be epic once it’s all done [emoji736]

Yes I hope so. I love this little car so happy to put the time in..... most of the time!

That is awsome. Car is going to be mint! Look forward to further updates.

I hope so mate. It's always been clean for it's age and mileage but will look loads better with the fresh paint.

Madness.

Brilliant ?

Brillant madness?

Fantastic work.
Love that last shot, so moody.

I know. I've been wanting to get "that shot" since I've spoken to the farmer about using the unit and happy with how it's come out after a little edit.

Get a new grill mate. You're doing all this on it, so it makes sense ?

Yeah your right Craig. I'll drop him a message soon I think.

Bonnet, front bumper and washer blanks all primered. All degreased, and then i put some etch primer on the bonnet and some plastic primer on the bumper and blanks. Pretty happy with the outcome, considering ive only picked up the gun a few times. (Maybe a bit more but not a lot.) In fact, it was probably april/May time that I fish had a go at spraying. I'd never done it via a gun before, only cans.

Luckily at my firm, they are happy to teach me which in turn has its perks. Dont get me wrong, im certainly not skilled to do base and lacquer, but good to get involved with the basics and having a go. It feels so much more involved than just using a rattle can, from prep to gun clean, mixing paint to the actual spraying process.

Will block them later in the week.

Unfortunately I don't think I'm going to make CSF this year in this.

With another job happening after work (farmers father passed away and he's car is getting painted before the sale), I think Will will be rushed to do both. As I mentioned above, I'm not skilled enough so will need to have he's help. With this, I think we are going to be pushed for time to get it prepped, painted, fitted up and polished too.

We will see how things go, but I may turn up in the missus Nissan Note instead. Shame, but I'm not rushing a job, just to get to a show. I'd rather take a bit more time and do it properly.

Never know, it may change and fingers crossed it does, but for now it's looking like I'll be clio-less for CSF. But myself and Emily are still going as we wouldn't miss the show for anything!

This makes me sad, but totally understand why you don't want to rush bud.

Still glad I get to see your sexy face!

Fantastic progress Mark, i can't believe how deep you've gone into getting the paint sorted...….. but in a really good way! Don't think a rattle can would have sorted it to be honest lol! That photo of the bonnet with all the paint flaking off, O-M-G, that's a moment where you truly know there is no going back!

Great progress and totally understandable about CSF - i'm hoping to be there this year in my Clio. I think an Arctic with a private plate and gold 16" Oz's won't be hard to spot!!

Basically only coming to CSF to see this, best get a move on chap ??

The amount of times i look at mine and consider doing the same... i just dunno what to do with it paint wise.
Ull see why when you see it at CSF lol.

Great progress though dude, its gonna be possibly the best 182 on here once done.

Mate, stop insulting yourself. We can do that for you!

Yeah i know. I am gutted as i wanted it to be its 1st outing but it doesnt look likely. Im currently using the farmers barn for storage for free so i cant moan really!

Im looking forward to a catch up too!

Soz mate!

I never planned on this, but luckily with the facilities at work, the products/materials being halved and the help im getting, it'll make this worth its while.

Yeah i thought that about the bonnet too. It was the point of no return! Was quite satisfying scraping off the old paint though!

It would be great to see you and the everclean arctic! I presume you'll be sporting the golds at CSF then?

Ha! Mate they'll be so many nice ones there im sure, so plenty to take your thoughts away from mine!

Im looking forward to seeing you and the Ph1 at CSF mate. I'm not judgemental, as i know all cars are projects but i'll sure have a look at it with you.

Did a bit more on the RB.

Removed the rear badges:

29976781768_cb2215703a_z.webp

I have ordered a new genuine "Clio" badge and a new genuine 197 "Renault Sport" to replace the one i've removed. I didn't want the original one on and prefer the 197 look to the newer ones. Plus it matches my steering wheel and clock bezel stickers and now my new show plates.

Made a start on the bodywork. Sanded it down and gave it the 1st skim of filler. Needs more fettling and to be honest i haven't got "the feel" for it yet so will need it looked over and added by better hands.

The rear was done due to having a bad repair prior to my ownership. Its never bothered me but seen as im doing the sides, i may as well do the rear.

You'll notice that i have some surface rust on the rear and the sills. This is nothing major so i will give it some rust treatment and paint them. I also have some 1" x 1" box tube that ive drilled and will bolt them onto the back of the jacking points to add strength. These will bolt through the existing holes in the skirts so hopefully be hidden.

Here are the bits im prepping.

28909796397_9e1c142230_z.webp

The badges will need redoing as they have chipped as you can see. Im contemplating doing them a slightly lighter grey such as Ford Polaris Grey, just like my inlets.

28909786967_51761e4fae_z.webp

The one stubborn nut that didnt remove. A grinder fixed that!

29976246688_823a378999_z.webp

Due to me deciding to go wiperless, ive bought a wiper blank off one of the facebook pages. Once i receive it, i'll smooth it and paint it satin black. I have also bought a spare loom/plug for my broken wing mirror one. My original plan was to cut the wires and solder the new one on, but im told i can just use the black plug casing, which is what i think i've only broke. Will check later on. Also, as i'm going wiperless, i removed my rear washer jet. I did think about filing the hole but i think i will add a bung in there as its less work and i have some bungs here at work.

Finished the night with a beer!

42037532990_aa3a502b9f_z.webp

I could only do a few things this morning, but i managed to get the other parts prepped, ready for primer. Unsure on the door handles, whether to paint them or just polish them up as they are in good condition.

29976243768_77698a8760_z.webp

I've also ordered a new genuine front grill as mine was snapped. The top bit had only broken on one side but fell apart today. I remember grills being £40ish, but now they are £75! But i needed one so one was bought.

29976260408_35179a3df2_z.webp

I also ordered a new genuine full flap. I could have bought a non genuine one for less money but i didnt know how they'd fit so i opted for a genuine one for peace of mind. Renault have discontinued the wiper nut covers and the front bumper stickers so i've ordered the covers from @Mbeau and bought some textured vinyl off ebay for my bumper stickers. I will make a template prior to cutting the vinyl. Im in work toorrow for a few hours so i'll start a bit more on the body and i want to flat a polish the headlamps.

Thats all for now.

Tickled to 70k. Great effort, will look awesome when done.

oooh catching me up! I'm on 73k! Great attention to detail again Mark, defo done the right thing buying all the genuine bits, you'd kick yourself after I think otherwise after all this work.

The gold OZ's are staying on my car for now yes, I cleaned the Turini's the other week fronts and backs so they are back to 'new' condition for if I do want to put them back on, but for now, happy with the goldddddddd! :D

Got a bit more done.

Jacking sills needed a bit of attention as mentoned earlier. I think jelly is stronger!

28935122347_a56fc4fe7a_z.webp

Gave the car a good scuff up all round.

After this i did lose a bit of motivation but i did pick it up again.

I removed the door sensors but broke a clip on each. Luckily a quick PM to @Mbeau sorted that out along with a replacement passenger window seal as i buggered mine up removing it. Top guy!

30001589088_49ac193a86_z.webp

Then i pulled it into the workshop as i wanted to get the sills to bare metal. I was told to do this as most people sand the sills down then paint, but you have to get rid of the chips as it will eventually rust, so bare metal is the only way. Did this by using 80, 180 and 320 DA discs, then 400 onto the bodywork for a smooth blend and a zip wheel on a grinder for the hard to reach areas. Both these took so long and was time consuming. I adjusted the jacking points better too.

30001590628_fbf6356d9d_z.webp

While the car was in, i finished removing the kick plate stickiness and gave the shuts a clean up.

More soon.

Yeah it is Steve. Saying that, my old grill had been sprayed (prior to my ownership) so it was a satin black anyway. I'll get some cleaning stuff on it to keep it looking darker than it is now.

Amazing work as always mate.

I can't wait to see it finished so I bet your mega excited!

Wicked mate!! I reckon you should trailer it to CSF & show it like this, no bonnet or arches etc etc. In a strange way I think it looks kind of cool! ?
