Launch Control

  BMW 320d Sport

The launch control units that you can get for anything up to £150 made by Micro Dynamics, Omex etc. are basically just a variable rev limiter. Ive got one that I fitted as a soft-cut limiter, full throttle gearchange and launch control. The only thing I dont really use out of the functions is launch control. Its just not really needed and not that great anyway. If youre having trouble getting the power down, you need to drive a different way. Doesnt matter how your suspension is set up, how much power youve got, what size your tyres are etc, there will always be a point when you launch where you have the exact balance between wheelspin and bogging down and youre putting down as much power as possible without wasting any.

So theres no point moaning just cos Craggys good at starts - like he says, thats what wins the traffic lights grand prix, not wheelspinning and smoking the tyres! There really is no substitute for practice, whether on the streets or on the 1/4 mile. Only a pricy rev-limiter with slip sensors on each wheel etc are actually a fit & forget system where it just works without any fuss, without you having to mess about getting it spot on.

......and screw the clutch after five races

i alway thought that the best recipe for launches was mid/rear engined and rwd
