MX5 Number 4

Afternoon CS, long time no see.

I'd do a project thread, but there's just too much stuff to post for a poverty spec member! I know there's a good few MX5 owners on here, so this may or may not be of interest... My latest shed:

Done a couple of days at Oulton already, so much fun! (no photographer there on the second day ffs!)

I remember that time I saw you as a tight ass'd 14 year old at school.

Dweamy.

  Listerine & Poledo
Possibly the best looking one you've had.
Not keen on the roundels though. At the very least it would need a liveried wing

One day, you'll get a proper 5 though ;)

Looks proper on track mate!

More, more, more!
It's not bad! Needs better rubber for sure - Liking the look of Nangkang (insert lols) NS2-R's or Federal 595 RS-R's. We'll see!

See, I've done potatoshops without the roundels, and it looks kinda bare and naked. Weird.

Probably right.. I do like the look of the MK4

I've got Nankang NS2's on the s15, big smokies but decent! :tongueclosed:

I think the roundels are awesome

Goodj won't like it but I'm really coming round to a mk1 like this.

Swap my roundels for your RKR's? Sweet.

Yes, it's got blue, square headlights - these are Raybrig units that fit S13/MR2/RX7, light output is mental and they were very cheap. I have tried the OEM splitter and it just didn't look right with the rest of it.

I did! And then some b*****d bought it before I could, though I've formulated a plan that is very similar.

1) What are RKRS
2) If your plan involves Jenveys on your Mk.2, then you're going to win very hard.
a decade of chassis dev > pop-up lights  ..... (even square ones, sorry)

1) RkR's are my wheels, dem sik Rota's!
2) it does involve jenveys, just not a mk2.
pop up lights and a massive amount of aftermarket parts compared to mk2 > chassis dev

Oh dear, you've become one of those lost causes.

Not entirely sure at the moment, was thinking it would be worthwhile to raise more funds for my own ITB setup and get some more focused track wheels in the long run but haven't thought about it much.

ooh, Jenveys? bike bodies? are you DIY'ing it

Yeah, other than an ECU it'll cost about £250, so why not! Off a GSXR750, slightly better size for inlet manifold spacing. Will get those on once I've sorted out some decent tyres!

Fair enough. Presumably not a huge hike in power with that.

I've been reading through lots of build threads for last few days and now have a good idea how much work is needed for what I want. Hopefully it'll get towards 180hp in the long run. Things were much simpler before I spoke to Goodj and still wanted a turbo.

Where did you find this? I'm looking for another one but they're either v expensive or sheds :(

Well I bought it standard nearly a year ago, it was v.expensive and at the other end of the country (manchester to Colechester...) seems like they're getting hard to come by nice ones now!

Not after massive power tbh. I've had fast cars before; this feels plenty for the road - maybe a little slow around Oulton though. Ideally I'd buy a 99-00 NB 1.8 engine, strip it and rebuild it with some cams, up the compression, ITB's etc. Did look at turbos but they're a pain in the arse when you start taking them on track (manifold studs backing out etc)

Gave it a quick wash today and this issue that I've kept noticing for a while has popped up again. It's a really nice dark blue colour (called satellite blue mica) and when the sun shines on it the passenger side reflects really deep purple, the rest of the car just stays blue when the suns on it...

Any ideas why this might be? Just purely old, faded paint? Would I be able to get the purple shine back or will I just have to live with it?
@gally /paint experts etc

Only thing I can think is either it's had a lot of paint in the past, or it's been parked in the same place in the sun for years and just faded...

I'll update this as its coming nicely up to mx5 season. Quite a lot has changed...
I started out by buying 205/50/15 595RSR's from tyre leader (surprisingly good value)
16458995639_aba18306a2_b.jpg

Went for a blast one night on the cat and fiddle with @sofaboy and this somehow ended up with me buying his mx5...

Immediately switched wheels. The grids have 195/50/15 NS2R's fitted and initial impression is that they're a bit more grippy than the federals, but maybe I've not put enough miles on the federals yet.
Next up, fitted the megasquirt ecu (this was tidied up)

16993103959_5f8d8c9973_b.jpg

Next up, added a cheap as chips ducktail

16665064820_3f39e384e1_z.jpg

Transferred the trlane harness bar, seats and harness across
16881008676_c612744db3_b.jpg

Refitted my old soft top and removed the roundels

16420935413_848bfce58b_b.jpg

Fitted clear round Raybrig lights
16839845227_99139af1a3_b.jpg

Fitted wilwoods
17047271245_95b40b5583_b.jpg

And went for a bank holiday blast
17068974952_f3d6b48342_b.jpg

And next up, it's going to be fitting those throttle bodies and getting back out on track asap!
Thanks for looking.

Not much has happened recently, I've added frame rails, chopped the rear bumper and that's about it. I've bought a 6 speed, so that'll go on sometime soon, still collecting turbo parts, going to be another couple of months yet... Gave it a quick wash last night and took a few snaps, doesn't scrub up too bad!

Why have I not seen this thread until now!?

Absolutely love it mate... Watching your vids makes me want to book a trackday right now!

Looks awesome that as usual!

Thanks mate!

Need to do a trackday with you back end of this year Joey. You have your turbo on by then? Also what you going for turbo wise?

I've got a TD04L off an Impreza, hoping to have it all ready by the end of summer (though it depends on the guy making the exhaust manifold) so fingers crossed should be able to squeeze a trackday in either at the end of this year or beginning of next year depending on work etc..

That really does look proper. I want one lol

i want an mx5. always wanted one

Thanks chaps!
There's a fair few more videos on my channel that I won't be posting on here due to CS police(lols) but feel free to have a look. B-road blasts and such like. I need a better microphone though, gopro one is shocking!

Engine crane arrived yesterday, so I'll be looking at getting the gearbox and flywheel fitted in the next couple of weeks!

Also, I will be getting rid of the silver car in about a month for around a grand with the hardtop (no soft top) ideal for a cheap track car!
