My ITB'd 172 cup fast road/ track car project

  Trafic 140dci
first of all i will tell you all how i got into clio's, it all started nearly 2 years ago when i spotted a 182 on a forecourt, not knowing anything about clio's i immediately fell in love with it, so i bought it, it had the cup suspension and wheels, but i didn't find that out until i found cliosport.net :)

so then on clio sport i started learning so picked up some recaro's, got a 3/4 plate and was fairly happy but then had to sell it due to getting a house of my own.

so now been in my house over a year and saved a bit of money, i don't need a car for work as i have a van, and the Mrs has a car too, so this is just purely going to be a Toy for track days/fast road driving, so i knew it had to be a ph1 172 or a 172 cup.

so after looking around at some bad examples i found this which seemed ideal, and it was local :)

the splitter :nono:

i saw past the ugly wheels and bodged splitter to the good bits:
-JMS cambelt recently
-JMS remap
-4x new toyo t1r's
-New ferado disks and pads in every corner
-piper cat back exhaust
-apex -30mm springs

so after getting it, with the peanuts i had left i started getting it back looking good. first job was 3/4 plate and skoda splitter.

so one weekend i got bored, and decided to take a rattle can to the badges and bullets, came out really well, took alot of prep work as old ones had bubbled up badly. please ignore how dirty the car is

so in the mean time i picked up a rough looking set of turini's so while they were being refurbed i had it RR at APT in lenwade to see what the power was to start with. the results were poor to be honest, as it was recently seviced with a JMS remap it made 158bhp. but i later found out from a few people that APT give a very low reading. so looked forward to getting it on another set of rollers.

IMG_1009-1.jpg

i then got my turini's back, had the t1r's put on off my ph2 rims and the car was looking right, i also added a TRS tow strap, not to sure on it now if i'm honest, would prefer a Si Tow eye.

i then managed to get hold of a set of Jenveys & Omex 600 second hand so i decided to to have them fitted at TDF dropped the car off 2 weeks ago.

Matt had a few problems with the kit, trumpets were wrong diameter, fuel rail wouldn't fit, air filter was sh*gged, and loom was a bodge job to say the least so this held matt up by a week in getting my car done waiting for parts.

but i got it back today, made 168bhp standard and 192.3 yesterday :)

and here are the pictures of how its sitting today :)

hopefully this weekend i should be removing fog lights and arch lines for brake disk cooling, and i also have a universal Powerflex exhaust mount i want to fit in my existing bracket as my rubbers have gone, but thats weather dependant.

Future plans, well alot, but only as things come up second hand cheaply as i'm tight haha, so watch this space :)

thanks mate, its only just begun lol lots more to come, but dont want to start with a MASSIVE first post lol

get them, worth every penny, the sound is amazing, not to mention the power

Very nice looking Cup you have there. Wheels have completely transformed the car. Hopefully we will see and hear you out on track at some point.

tour-de-force, they fitted and mapped my setup that i bought second hand, but they do there own throttle bodies and i think fitted they are they cheapest around

car looks to good to be abused on track!

thanks, its just clean, body work isn't brilliant, in serious need of a new bonnet, its rusting and some major stone chips, and lots of stone chips on front bumper, far from brilliant, must just be my good photography

Looking much better now, ITB's give a much nicer drive over the standard FBW.

Do you know what size trumpets your running? They must be shorter than 90mm for you to keep your organal bonnet catch.

Thanks wheels were done by Airport Car Care Norwich, i think its a lighter colour than the Anthracite used on a Trophy, but i like think it goes nice with the Mondial Blue

fogs removed today, was gonna fit a universal exhaust mount, but by the looks of it the piper has been bodged on, so will leave that untill i get a new exhaust, on the other hand a look at the brake pads and disks while wheels were off, and they look like they have a lot of life left :)

Looking good. When are you hitting the track?

no idea to be honest, as and when i can, as i dont like to miss a day of work during week (self-employed) so can only really do weekends, would like to get it on a set of 15's + r888's for track days first,

I've just done a deal with a wheel shop in Rochford essex. Got these wheels http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=350477177973&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT for £250 delivered to Adam & Page, motorsports tyre specialist in High Wycombe who are wrapping them in Yokohama AO48R for £380 for me, then delivered back to me. £630 all in for brand new wheels and tyres not bad I think?

Very nice.

Take a few hours out of your weekend and get some VHT Silver spraypaint and get a few coats in that bay! Rocker/Engine mounts/maybe even whole block.....will freshen it up and look lovely.

cheeky little update for my day off.

well as some of you may/ may not of seen i've picked up a trophy spoiler and it arrived today, quick little picture before it gets sent off to the Spray Shack after a very good quote :)

IMG_1145.jpg

been using the Jenveys for nearly 2 weeks, and loving them, although one day i had a little bit to much lead in my right foot, and managed to pull the cable out of the solderless nipple  so i came up with a little bodge to stop me pressing too hard on the throttle peddle and pulling the cable out again, just a few bits of plastic trim and a rubber grommet i had left over from removing my arch liners... will do until i can get a Jenvey throttle cable on with a soldered nipple on ITB end, now i can press the throttle peddle as hard as i like and it won't pull the cable out of the nipple.

this is how i have my peddle setup and like it like this

IMG_1136.jpg

as you can see in the second photo, before i come up with my bodge, there was quite abit of space between the throttle peddle and the floor, when open at fulll throttle.

IMG_1137.jpg

my homemade bodge, took all of 2 mins :)

IMG_1138.jpg

fitted in place

IMG_1139.jpg

and working

IMG_1140.jpg

i then adjusted the throttle cable by only a few mm to make sure that the bodies where fully open when on full throttle resting on new restrictor

i've also bought a set of blue Magnecore HT lead off DannyR which should hopefully arrive today, will add pictures when they do.

you realise that you've basically just removed the "step" part of the accelator travel. It will go to the floor. There is a cut off point which is used for the speed limiter cancellation. Or was that your intention?

Car looks nice though mate :D Think I may have seen it while I was down at Matts.

i don't quite know what you mean, the way my throttle cable was set up, when it was full throttle there was a space between the restrictor on the floor and the peddle, so when i was driving a bit too hard i pressed down so hard i pulled the cable out of the nipple in the ITB's if you get me

so this is just a bodge to stop me doing it again, i have set it up so that once it hits my home made restrictor its still full throttle if you get me?

or have i done something i shouldn't of (i'm no mechanic!) lol

just fitted the Trophy boot struts ready for spoiler, supprised how low it makes my boot open lol

He won't have speed limiter/cruise control as his is a cup mate

oh is that what he meant? its also a custom cable throttle for the ITB's which is why it didn't go to floor in first place, it could of done, but i like the accelerator being same level as brake :)

looks good mate! you gonna be selling the cup spoiler? also with the itbs fitted, is their and instant feel that there is more power?

Yes the cup spoiler should be available end of next week hopefully, yeah the ITB's made a big difference, 24bhp more on TDF's dyno, it is a totally different animal it's different in every way possible to drive, very happy with them

  Trafic 140dci
Bargain price on the spoiler & struts. I paid £180 for my spoiler but I love the look of it on my cup.
just found a pic of your cup after seeing your post, that spoiler looks perfect, i was a bit skeptical about buying one as i'd never seen one on a cup before, but now i'm glad i did, your car is stunning mate!

  172 Cup
Cheers mate. I need to get the alloys refurbed as they are flaking & get the rear bumper resprayed again cause someone in my local tesco couldn't reverse out without taking the paint off the corner only 3 weeks after it was sprayed :(

  Trafic 140dci
time for an update :)

its been a while since i've been subbing off 2 companies so thats 14 hours a day 7 days a week most of the time, all good coz more money for my clio :) so please excuse how filthy my car is had no time to clean it

anyway first thing is first, after seeing a trophy being split on ebay i managed to pick up a trophy spoiler and struts cheap as above, anyway got it back from Simon at Spray Shack very quickly, and he done a perfect job here it is fitted, i also got a carbon fibre wiper blank off ebay, think it looks ugly but means i got rid of the rear wiper (not needed for me, i'm used to driving a van anyway!) i'm probably gonna fill my standard one in, smooth it down and spray it, think it will look alot better

IMG_1179.jpg

i had also been looking for a cheap set of 15" wheels for ages, when a lush set of Team Dynamic Pro Race 1.2's in Anthracite came up on ebay, emailed the guy about 3 times with no reply regarding courier, so bidded anyway, won, but he still didnt get back to me so i bought these instead.

IMG_1178.jpg

no more than about an hour after i paid for the f1's i got an email back about the TD, so bought them too
 they are sitting in the garage awaiting some spiggot rings :)

typical clio my exhaust hanger had fell apart, but one of the previous owners done a bodge on it, so didn't bother repairing it for ages but with a track day tomoro i thought i'd better sort it out

before

IMG_1180.jpg

after, powerflex universal exhaust mount (i did take my socket out in the end lol)

IMG_1181.jpg

as mentioned its my first track day tomoro (first of many!) so thought i'd do whats supposed to be the best value for money mod

yes thats right stripped the car of what wasn't needed, (the whole rear to be precise) left the tool kit in, as i can use it if needs be tomoro

IMG_1182.jpg

for anyone wondering the whole rear interior is forsale, and the oz f1's (as of when the spigots rings arrive) so pm me if your interested, saves me making an add on here

thanks

lewis

Go carefull dude, not the best idea to strip it out before your first track day - the weight distribution will have changed greatly, and it may handle different - go carefull :)

i here what your saying, but if i've never driven it round a track at all it doesn't really matter as i will be learning the car to start with anyway if that makes sense, anyway now off to snetterton :D going early as i cant wait so will watch the Novice session for now :)

I mean all the fast road driving you have done, you will be used to the car and how it moves around as it is, now it is stripped it will behave differently - a mate found this out when he stripped his bare and smashed his mint Saxo VTS on his first lap at Castle Combe :(
