My Renault Clio 172 Phase 1

thanx buddy for the kind comments, looking at your picture, im guessing yours was the 182 track car they are currently building. I had a really good look round yours when Matt was mapping mine. It looks like a brand new car, its so clean and the engine bay looks sweet. Seeing yours has deffo inspired me to get there ITB set up. I will take a look at the brake fluid you have recommended, thanx again.

Thanx Lewis, yes I did mate, I thought it worked really well. Thanx for the recommendation, I have quite a few now. I will check them all out and make a decision in a couple of days or so. Its supposed to be gail force winds tomorrow so im glad I got the other one finished today lol
Yes it is, thank you very much :) I can't wait to get it! The ITB kit they offer really is great and is great value for money! If you ever need convincing then your more than welcome to come out in the car/ take it for a spin ;)

Little update

As im sure you are all aware no matter where you live in the UK thats its getting icey and windy. However yesterday I spent hours in this freezing cold picking off not 1 not 2 not even 3, but 6 stickers that were holding on the rear number plate. Not even Iron Man himself could have pulled that number plate off if he tried. However I was determined to succeed and finally prevailed. This morning my dodojuice arrived and I gave the front and rear number recesses a wash and polish before fitting my new ones from fancyplates. The reason I ordered new was because my previous plates had a car sales garage name on it and I hated it. Also the previous front number plate was far to big for the recess so I ordered a 520mm x 78mm instead. I also ordered sticky valcro strips online from Inest to stick them on with, this way I could removed them and adjust them whenever I felt like it. However like stancewhore, Inest also ripped me off and no matter how many times I call, e-mail I get nothing back. Instead I got them from halfords, but I got velcro strips instead of velcro circles.

I am going to run with the front plate for now, but I also dont want to chav the car up in any way so if anyone thinks its gay please let me know. I washed and polished the car a couple of times last week to try and protect it for the winter. Not much is going to have to it until after x mas now.

I really do not like these shortened number plates - they just look odd to me.

The car however looks excellent - I like the subtle mods! Think an engine spruce up would finish it off now.

Yes I agree, it does not work and it needs to go lol. I'm going to get another standard sized one from fancy plates.

Not very happy today, my goodriche brake lines I bought from ebay dont fit and I also indicated earlier in the thread I had a bobbling noise coming from what I thought was the back of the car after having my coileys fitted. As my mechanic put the front wheel on a jack to attempt to fit my brake lines he noticed my passenger side topmount was really lose. I even took my car back to SCA ralley for them to take a look to see if there was an issue and they said they couldnt find anything. I have not tightened the topmount up yet, but I am guessing this is going to be the issue. It could be worse my friends coolent pipe popped off his VXR emptied the system and the engine cut out. But now the coolent stinks of petrol and the car wont restart.

No disrespect to SCA, but they are useless, I had them fit my 182 manifold as I don't like going under the car on axel stands. I went to them as they are exhaust specialists.

After 4 hours working on the car they called me and tried telling me it wouldn't fit... I had to explain to them what to do. Wasn't happy, won't be using them again.

  ITB 428 Ph1
Did they really, they were also the ones that told me my AST topmounts wouldn't fit my V Maxx coileys even though they were the coilover fitment. Then when I was walking bout waiting for them to finish the work on my car, I noticed they had got the Kamracing website up on there computer with my topmounts up, probably because they were unsure. Where else Could I have gone Lewis what's kind of local to us ?

  ITB 428 Ph1
I never had no problems with my ktec coileys and my mate fitted them privately. These guys have all the equipment yet I have bobbling issues

  Trafic 140dci
Tbh I don't know anywhere local to recommend, if theres something I can't do I usually have a local garage in Drayton do it, as all my family has always used them and we've never had a problem, just tried SCA for my exhaust as I thought they were specialists, speaking of websites they tried telling me k-tec told them the manifold wouldn't fit LOL

There is cit-ren near poringland, French car specialists, got a breakers yard and a workshop, meant to be very good there, closer to you too

  ITB 428 Ph1
Yeah I've used citren before and there really good and helpful. I don't think they have got the gear for alignment and diagnostics. I'm going to invest in a puremotorsport strut brace and topmounts at some point and wait to untill I go back to TDF for ITB's or something. Could be 6 months from now though lol

Pure Motorsport strut brace is a great bit of kit, if you do get it, have a go fitting it yourself, pretty easy tbh, I'm no mechanic, very little knowledge of car's and I done it in a few hours, I'd offer to help, but not being a mechanic, I wouldn't want to break nothing on your car lol

Your noise could be either loose topmount or broke topmount, the bearing went on mine a while back, it would make a kind of bouncy tapping noisy (hard to explain).

Ive heard good things about that french car breakers yard place, never been there mind.

Just beware that in the summer, with the heat the Velcro glue melts, and the plates slide off! I used it, with the same thought as you. Bad idea!

  ITB 428 Ph1
I didn't think of that, the front ones comming off anyway because it looks gay so I will do the rear at the same time, thanx for the heads up

Like what you're doing mate.
But please - get rid of those p6000's - one of the worst tyres ever, I can't believe Pirelli put their name to them!

Update

Happy new year everyone, it feels like ages since I have updated this thread. As you may know TDF kindly adjusted and corrected my gear linkage as I could push it straight into reverse while I had all my performance parts fitted and mapped. However since then my gear box has a very quiet wine to it. The gear box changes gear smoothly and sharply every time. It seems to get a bit louder in 5th around 50-70mph. I ran it down to Renault today after taking a technician for a drive in it and he definitely thinks its the gear box. Ive booked it in tomorrow to have an oil change if needed and a check on the condition, hopefully it's nothing to serious. The whine is very quiet and hardly noticeable but as the owner I know it's there.

The bobbling noise I also mentioned before could be my exhaust knocking as pointed out by the technician. I'm looking to get these put right by tomorrow. Lol and yes the tyres need to be changed but probably more towards the summer as my bank account is still recovering from x mas.

As I said before I will tackle these issues first then hopefully get the ITB package by TDF fitted by the summer. I still have not tried my dodo juice as of yet due to the hideous cold windy weather, however when I get the car back from Renault I'm going to give the ole girl a well deserved clean and pamper.

Update

Okay so I have had the call from Renault with feedback to the gearbox whine and knocking noise. The gear box oil was black so they have replaced it and it appears to have cured it, which is great. They went onto say bearing 2 is a common bearing to go usually. The knocking noise was my rear exhaust mount. They are keeping the car and replacing it for me tomorrow as a selfish individual took the last one this morning. Overall I am very pleased it was nothing to serious. I had previously tried to book my car in at Renault to have the gear box oil replaced but this irritating women who insisted only changing the gear box oil if there is a serious problem as it is not recommended due to it being a sealed unit. My whiter led sidelights should arrive soon as my white sidelights I put in are not brighter enough compared to my 6000k HID's.

it is not recommended due to it being a sealed unit.

Wtf?!
No it's not it has a drain plug and a filling plug! Gearboxes last longer the more often the oil is changed, goes without saying. How many miles is it on?
Hope it does fully cure it and no lasting damage has been done.

  ITB 428 Ph1
Yeah I know it has really annoyed me especially considering the condition of the oil that was in there. I rang a couple of times to try and avoid the women and hopefully get someone else who knew what they were talking about in the service department. As I said I drove down there yesterday tittle tattled on the women and got the work done as I wanted too. The car has only covered 43k, however Matt TDF mentioned its possible the gear box has been changed as he had to correct me gear linkage as I mentioned above. If there was some serious damage that had been caused due to the oil and the information provided by the women, I would have been fuming

  ITB 428 Ph1
I would like to inspect the oil personally to check for swarth or anything like that. Obviously due to the condition of the oil I wonder was it still lubricating as it should.

Just read your thread. Great read and great little car. Hope to get mine up to the same standard.

Thanx buddy, it's just takes time todo because of the cost involved. I know alot of guys on here do alot of the work on there cars themselves but unfortunately I don't have the skills and confidence to do it myself incase I f**k it up and cause problems for myself. The quality of Matts work at TDF is superb and I highly recommend them.

Update

Got my car back from Renault today, the exhaust was knocking in two places, on the worn exhaust mount and on my subframe. My v maxx coileys are slammed at the back so theres only a small gap and occasionally on a big bump in the road it may knock, but I can live with that. Obviously my exhaust is sitting up where it should be now so it actually looks abit stealthy again.
The gear box oil replacement has almost completely got rid of the gear box whine. My gear box appears to be in good condition and looks to be the original but was well over due an oil change. The cars only covered 43k so I would have been disappointed if it needed replacing already, I guess it is 11 years old. I don't drive the car hard ever as I want to keep it in tip top condition.

I have the same idea, its 11 years old, I love and I want to keep for ever
but I do want to enjoy it too so my advice is: use it! drive it hard but with respect for the mecanical side. I think the car even enjoys it!

Lol yes I do agree, but I used to own a 1.4s phase 1 and if literally fell to peices, however I imagine the 172 is designed to take more abuse.

I was having a chat with a customer in work about old skool cars and we were reminiscing about the likes of Rs turbos, xr2's etc. That was the day lol, and I think this the ph1 is in the same catagory. I think about changing mine almost every month but I just can't. Love talking about different cars to get etc but for what I've spent on it and what I would need to spend I can't justify it, so if I ever put a thinking of selling post up please remind me of this.

They are built strong.
I have just read the thread from the beginning, Wow !!!!!!! I thought mine was in a reasonably good nick , once the warmer weather comes i'll deff be doing my lamps after seeing yours.
I too have done alot of work on my Ph1 and just haven't the time to do a thread. Full marks to you on the outcome of your pride and joy well done.

Thanx buddy for the kind comments, the headlamps do come up really well, it was great someone created a step by step instruction how to do it correctly so it was idiot proof.

I had a saxo VTS 1.6 before this and it had costed me a lot of money over the years. I could make a whole list of things that broke on that car!

  ITB 428 Ph1
Lol yeah I had more or less the same problem. I think I bought the car over a couple of times with the amount of replacement parts I fitted. I did drive it really hard though and it barely came out of 2nd gear lol that's why I will treat this one with alot more respect. I think knowing I have power available also stops me from racing which is strange to be honest.

The weather today didnt look to promising, it was overcast all day, however I was ambushed and sprayed with a f*****g gritter truck and the car had to be cleaned. I know they are very important and save lives but I had no where on the road to escape to, to avoid it spraying my poor car.
I rinsed the car down using the hose and used the dodo juice to wash it with. I am very impressed with the dodo juice, it foams up well and provides plenty of slip to avoid dragging dirt across the paint work and scratching it. It help leaves the polished layers on the car too. It smells like you should be using it in the shower as well which I think is great. I washed the alloys, blacked the tyres, polished the glass and dried the car. The polish layers I built up before the cold weather set in appear to still be protecting the paint. I would have liked to have done the inside and door jams but I didnt want to push my luck with the weather.
