newbie with a clio cup race car

  BMW Z4
this adds 20 hp throughout the rev range lol

Direct from renault motorsports , there isn't a lot I would need to get from them though , only the front hub parts , engine mounts and subframe , could source all other parts for my car from elsewhere , or make it

A local guy to me did it , he started from scratch so only have the engine loom left from the original car , all other wiring is new , it cost me £900 to have done , and he's done a very good job

Do you have contact details for them please? can you PM me.

Mark

  RIP Dan
Shame you can't make it here, I would have waved to you when spectating with my webbed fingers.

You done Jersey before?

It's a bloody good rally according to overseas people who race.

Yes I have been coming to the Jersey rally for the last 7 or 8 years , last competed about 4 years ago in My M3 , but the brand new gearbox jammed in gear on the first stage !
A few of us are coming over to watch , and sample to beer again lol , staying in the Merton
You out watching it ?

Hello Ian,

Thought I would check how my little old Clio was doing!

Looks like the project has caused you a few headaches but you've done a good job. Did the car colour dictate the van respray? lol She never travelled in that amount of comfort with my trailer!

One thing I always wondered. Given that the race car has no chassis number, just a build number. Can you just transfer the chassis number over from the donor car to get it road registered?

Keep us posted how you get on.

Cheers

the mk1's had a chassis number i think, pretty sure the mk2's will too, we had to get a letter from RUK to register our old mk1 on a H plate

Fred you didnt register anything, MK1 have a VIN plate Mk2 have a build number only.......registerring a MK2 cup car is an absolute nightmare if you do it properly (not swapping ID's to a scrapped car). I should know as the Pink car was bad enough.....

You've not got rid of this have you Ian? lots of stuff on sale at the mo.

No , I'm doing a rally in it on the 30th dec , I have just bought 30 brand new rally tyres for it so selling off the bits I don't need , not quite finished the car , but just a few small jobs left

30 tyres,ouch,Merry Xmas.

Ouch indeed , £4k's worth of ouch lol , I have just bought a rally prepared Mk 2 Golf as well to use on Gravel events which I'm using as a test on a rally in Pembrey on the 28th , its also running 15" wheels so I can use the tyres on both cars

Why ? I have done loads of gravel event in FWD and 4WD , I had a 206 cup car that you could throw around like an Escort , sideways everywhere , it was a lot of fun :D

Because I've never actually done it.

Being so used to rwd all my yoof and rallying days,I would just be worried natural instinct's would take over.

I know I race a fwd,but it all happens a little slower and there are no trees.

I'm sure after a little practice I would be fine though.

I was brought up on Escorts so know where your coming from , this was a handfull in Ireland through the slippy lanes with 316 hp !

Then how an Impreza should be driven lol

With a front wheel drive car on gravel you need to be braver on the throttle keeping it down on the bends to drag you round , where as a rwd you can drive the car easier on the throttle keeping the back end out , once I got over that , I found FWD good fun

Just taken my clio for an MOT this morning , so will be having it MSA log booked this afternoon and she's ready then , will probably use the clio on the rally in Pembrey now on the 28th as the golf I bought and was going to use runs out of gears at 107mph , so i'll use the golf on the rally on the 20th

Bit of a change of plan and am now using the clio in Pembrey on wednesday now looking forward to my first event in it , got it MOT'd today , and MSA log booked , so its all legal for rallying now , got a couple of things to do to in tuesday.
Will be using my golf 2 days later on a rally in Longmore

The nut off the rear nearside hub came off and the bearing collapsed , I haven't done any work on them so don't know why it came off , was p1ssed off that it did , had a couple of problems while we were there but nothing that would have stopped us , but when the bearing collapsed we were stuck out on the stage and went over time allowed and retired.

Seemed to be going ok , it was very slippery , spun off the track on the first stage after a big drift turned into a tank slapper and we got stuck on the grass lol , the only thing that was p1ssing me off was the electric power kept cutting out every 4 or 5 minutes , which cuts out everything inc the engine , think its a faulty electronic battery cut out , so will have to change it , I have to renew the stub axle , bearing and hub , and will drill both sides and fit split pins so it will never happen again , and test it for a day in Llandow before doing another rally

Sorry to hear it didn't all go to plan! What battery cut off do you have currently? I've had issues in the past with a Cartek one so opted to fit an Armtech in the new car hopefully it will be better!

Are you sure its the battery cut out? if your auto electrician wired the car the same as standard then the fuel pump, lambda and the PAS all run from the same circuit. Its Relay 3 on the original fuse box. Sounds more like a wiring problem or a dodgy relay, unless the battery cut out is actually cutting itself out and you have to turn everything back on again via the master switch.
