newbie with a clio cup race car

ouch , oh I bet that made you chuckle when you found that out !

I have a CNC milling machine in my workshop so will machine the extra tooth off , I remember many moons ago putting a rally car back together and then finding the thrust bearing lol , there was plenty of swearing going on after that !

Oh I was livid, 2 weeks of late nights preparing the car and had to rip it all apart again. Only conciliation was the release bearing guide round the input shaft was heavily worn and I didn't notice when I took it apart the first time. So good thing I had to take it apart again really.

Had a good day today , although we went off the road and got stuck for 45 seconds before being pushed out on the first stage , and suffering a misfire for 2 stages which turned out to be some water in the sparkplugs , we managed to get 10th overall and 4th in class , had a good day and learnt a lot about the car

That is f**king Awsome!!! The width through the gates on that left corner is mental!!! Only thing thats annoying is your rear view mirror is in the way, mount the camera a bit lower! Epic driving though!!!!

whipped the engine and box out and bought a new flywheel and clutch plate , and had the plate re-paddled

All back on the subframe , fitted a new water pump and track rods while it was apart

Its all back up and running now , taking it for the tracking to be done in the morning , a good clean , and load up for another rally on sunday :D

Had an up and down day yesterday , about a mile into the first stage the new clutch started slipping , we lost quite a bit of time , I was hoping it was just bedding in , it was better after it had cooled down and went out on the second stage , and did seem better the further we went , but even towards the end of the day , even if you touched the clutch by resting your foot on it it would slip , so the engine and box has to come out again now to see what the problem is.

We managed to finish the day , and did quite well even picking up a puncture on one stage , we caught a sunbeam and was right on his bumper but found a pot hole and punctured the rear nearside tyre which made right hand Benz interesting , luckily we were only a couple of miles from the end of the stage .

Well happy to pick up my first trophy with 6th overall and 3rd in class , not bad going as a 270hp darrian was first in class and a 300hp mk 2 escort was second , my little 180hp Clio did well , roll on more power : )

My Helix clutch was just like that when new along with a new flywheel. Just puting my foot on the pedal would make it slip, Now they seems to be worn in and works prefect.

I stripped it all apart today and can't see anything wrong with it , there seems plenty of clamping force on it , tried speaking to someone at helix but they took my number but no one called me back , will have a call round tomorrow with those in the know.

Measured the room I have for the thrust bearing incase it was tight and putting pressure on the clutch cover , but there is plenty of room , so I'm at a bit of a loss , never had a problem with a paddle clutch not biting , but then I've never fitted a brand new flywheel before so might just refit it all and put some road miles on it.

I think it is the combination of new plate + fly that does it. Now when the clutch bites my flywheel have got a goldish surface on it. Seems like some of the material on the pads have transfered to the flywheel. My guess its like beding in brake pads and it takes some time to get it right. Put some miles on it and it will work great.

Why do you take the engine out to do clutch? We did a lutch on mine in pits at brands in just under 2 hours, it slipped until we gave it extra cable, then it was sweet.

Its very easy to drop the complete subframe with engine and box ect on my ramp , I can have it all on the floor in 45 mins , and I wanted to get a better look at the thrust bearing in place to make sure it wasn't dragging .

I ordered a Helix cover for it today as I don't think the valeo cover is clamping it tight enough , I can move the clutch arm with one hand quite easily when the box is on the engine , I think the cover is faulty , it should be tighter than that to move , my sons 1.6 205 clutch arm is way harder to move

I'll refit that tomorrow afternoon and see how I get on with it

I have fitted a Helix cover on friday and I cannot move the arm at all by hand , so the Valeo cover must have been faulty , just need to refit the engine and box and give it a try now.
I'm not doing another rally for 6 weeks now so am hoping to have a new engine sorted out by then

Went and competed on a rally yesterday in West Wales , gave the clutch a good test and its perfect now , had a very good day , nothing went wrong with the car apart from hitting a big tractor tyre and snapping the corner of the front bumper off !

Finished the day 2nd in class and 4th overall , well happy with that , managed to keep an EVO 9 from beating me at the end , beat him by 10 seconds on the final times

Had some deliveries today , I'm going to be building an inbetween engine to give me some more power now , someone I have spoke to is doing a lot of work on one of these to get some silly power out of them so if that all goes well i'll have one of those

Got a standard engine off someone on here , so will strip that down in the next couple of days and get the head off to be ported ect , got cams on order from CAT , went for 423's , had a good chat with them yesterday and they have a solid lifter conversion with solid followers done now , they can supply it in a kit with cams , pulleys , springs ect and it works out at around £3k with a 4 week ordering time.

Got my throttle bodies , valves , wossner pistons and steel rods , so hopefully have it ready to fit into the car in the next 2/3 weeks :D

Some nice looking parts, same Jenvey's as in mine, i would of thought you would of gone for the newer Direct to Head Throttle bodies thought they are better?

was told by a few people that the tapered ones are better , they are used on the Millington engines which are about the best engines used for rallying today so can't be that bad

nice looking engine spec going in there Ian. Presumably you're doing full ACL bearings, lightening the crank and wacking a lightened fly on for good measure? What bore are you going for?

Cheers guys , looking forward to getting a more powerful engine fitted and making it go faster , at the moment I'm 1st in class in the Welsh tarmac rally championship but about 3rd or 4th overall , so would be nice to get some more speed to compete with the top guys :D some of the cars are very quick.

Had a pair of Cat adjustable cam pulley's delivered today which I seen for sale the other day on here brand new unused , so just need to wait for the delivery of the cams also from Cat and I just about have everything to build it up , just need an ECU and loom then.

Had a good chat with the guys at Cat regarding there solid lifter conversion today , took the plunge and ordered one , there are a selection of cams available , and comes with solid lifters , followers , double valve springs , cams , cam pulleys , they say it will take 9k revs ! looks like a good way of making the top end reliable and getting away from the standard follower problems.

I have ordered a kit car bottom end for this engine now , 90mm steel crank , 84mm pistons and 150mm rods , ordered them from a company in France , going all out for big power on this one now :D
