was going ok until the gearbox broke on the last stage , it started making some loud noises then jammed in third dropping us about a minute and a half and dropping us down the order.

The first stage I hit a curb and bent the rear beam slightly , then did the same in exactly the same spot on the 3rd stage bending it even more ! what a tw4t lol , so the handling was a bit interesting for the day , still , couldn't get on the pace of the front runners , could have been a 3rd in class and 6th overall without the box problems , ended up 10th OA and 4th in class.

Pain in the ass to have to strip it again now to get the box looked at , was hoping not to have to touch it this year and just go out and enjoy it , bloody cars!

I'll be doing the Mini Epynt next the beginning of June

Cheers Ian

ps , anyone have a rear beam for sale ?

Could the gearbox breakage be due to the extra power? Always been sceptical with wacking another 70hp through it and expecting it to be fine. The Group A cars they were designed for were only 220hp from memory with probably a lot less torque.

Me to on the gearbox but will see how it goes with mine.... The St75 box does have a higher torque rating and is a better design. Did notice on Ians on the Epynt incar there were a few missed gears / crunching but the sound wasnt great. Fingers crossed.

Will be interesting to see whats wrong with it, Hopefully have mine ready for June.

Missed shifts are normally down to user error/shift cut time to short on the STDSA. Once you make sure you give a good possitive pull everytime on the lever i found that i rarely had anymore issues with missed gears. Correct shimming of the cut switch also makes a big difference.

No SWR says the gearbox will take more power than mine , I am on the limit of the torque the box will take , it seems diff related to me as I had a similar problem with my Golf which turned out to be diff bearings , so we'll see.

I would put the missed gears down to me as 99.9% of the time its perfect , so its shimmed up right , must be me going limp wristed part way through a stage lol , perhaps its time to go paddle change :D

It looks spot on in the vid I just looked at. Easy to get lazy after a while, my arm use to hurt after a good drive when I first got the car lol. Paddle shift with auto blip down shifts ;)

Any Caerwent incar ? private viewing given the site restrictions ?

Yes got all the stages , as you know being a live base the videos can't go public , if you pm me your address I'll burn them onto a disc and post it to you

Thinking about the gearbox problems. Do you have any idea of the oil temperature in the box? It could be a good idea to put a cooler on the box. A friend of mine have that on his cup included in the loop is a oilfiler that keeps the oil clean. Just my thoughts

i still swear those boxes are meant to take a different oil, its like treacle, not a 75W90, i remember changing the oil on those boxes and it took about 1hour to fill the box, and that was with the oil warmed up in a saucepan LOL!

No haven't stripped it down yet , having a few weeks off it , with the 3 rallies I have just done has taken so much of my time I need a break from it , i'm not rallying until the mini epynt in june now so have plenty of time , will strip it down in thenext week or two and send it back to SWR
Cheers Ian

ian,
I don't write much on other people posts but I have to say that everything you did is spectacular! every single component and decision that you made is the best to build a private Clio Rally car.
I had the same project back in the 2005 but in a Clio 1600 Rally car. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jNEG6JlRESU
The sound of the new engine brings me back to 1998 where the best FWD Clio/Megane Maxi made us dreaming... :)
You are a legend!

Ive had some thoughts about the gearbox concerning the oil temperature. Just for fun I mounted a temp sensor in the box during winter to monitor the temperature. I was steady at 80c on the road with ambient temperature of 20c, on track however the temperature went up to 130c after just 10min of driving!!! Im not even sure that gearbox oil have the same resistance to heat as engine oil but even with engine oils you are geting close to critical heat levels.

So Im considering external cooling of the gearbox and thought this may be of some interest to you as well.

well if you compare a 5W40 engine oil to say a 75W90 gearoil in just viscosity terms they're MILES apart, 130degC is nothing

i'll double check but im sure the sadev boxes ran a 75W140 elf gearoil, it was like treacle, we had to heat it in a pan before pouring it in as it took AGES!

Box was removed from the car last week and I have shipped it to SWR today so should find out in the next few days what's wrong with it , get it fixed and back in ready for my next rally in 4 weeks time.

No not doing it this year , doubt i'll come over again , its way too expensive just for one event , with the stages being short i'd rather go to ireland to do another one , it cost me about £4k to do the Jersey rally last year , didn't help only doing a few miles before retiring lol.
I'm looking to do Wexford in Ireland in September then the Wales Rally GB in Nov in my golf

Will be interesting this as just watched you last stage at Cearwent and the noise from the box was exactly te same as when a bolt came loose on my crown wheel (gripper diffand 5.2 FD) and the noise was the bolt catching something in the box and got louder the more it unscrewed rather than go bang...press clutch in went way then back it came when engaging the clutch.

PS sent an email about he Reigers but all sorted now.

Spoke to SWR yesterday and 4th gear has chipped a tooth that went into the CW&P and fooked that up as well , the CW&P are made to order apparently now so will take 2 weeks to get one , I have an entry in a rally 2 weeks sunday so might not make it , so another couple of grand to spend on it lol !

Dooh!

Would it not be worth looking at the newer ST75-14 box? they seem a lot more reliable from what I can gather.

I think all gearbox's have there limits , these are no different , the ST75 included , the guy on here who just fitted one broke his before testing it , at least I got a few events out of mine .

Ian do you run close loop flatshift ?

No , but even if I did can't see it helping whats happened to mine , closed loop would help the dogs last longer , it won't stop fatigue causing the teeth to break , been rallying for 20 years and had enough mechanical breakages in my time , even the strongest boxes

I know its not a Clio but I sold my M3 a few weeks ago and have been deciding what car to get next , and went for a GTR in the end , had a small list of cars to tick off my bucket list , and ticked this one off first :D

Got to be honest i'm well impressed by it , probably the quickest car I have driven , I can see why its called a licence loser !
