Nickson's Titanium PH1 172

Good work! Nutter when it's not necessary though.

Yes, ph1's only have 1 foglight, you can run a wire to make both, but what's the point.

Pah, any excuse to spend some money on the car ;)

Ah okok. I was only wondering as I thought that wiring might have needed re-doing as well!

Little update!

Got my new washers through today:

After fitting:

Muchmuchmuch better than before!
Such a good upgrade for the small amount of money.

Chuffed!

Few more pictures of the car from the weekend.
Gave her a very good wash and clean before I take a trip to the alps for 2 weeks to go mountain biking!

Poor car will probably sit idle for 2 weeks :(.

Will be getting the car into a garage on my return, to get a few little niggles sorted.

But for now, I am loving it!

Should be some nice little updates to come as well ;)

It's been ages since I have updated this! Or even done any work to the Clio for that matter.

Mainly due to the fact that I have been in the Alps for the past few weeks, but needless to say, some work has been carried out since I have been back.

As can be seen earlier on in this thread, I have cleaned, treated and resealed the rear arches of the car.

It was now the turn of the fronts to get the same treatment. I apologize for the lack of pictures, the under seal stuff is horrible, and I didn't fancy getting everything covered in it :).

Firstly, this is how the car has been sat for the past few weeks. Hasn't moved an inch :(.

img2011080600203.jpg

Without further ado, I got cracking. Jacking the car up and scrubbing at the inner arches with a wire brush and some Tardis.

img2011080600204.jpg

Whilst down there I refitted my Eibach camber bolts, as I am taking the car down to Ktec to get the geometry dialed in (at long last).

Picture of the finished product.

img2011080600205.jpg

Again, I do apologize for the lack of pictures and rubbish write up, but I didn't take many pictures due to it being a messy job!

I did both sides of the car, and to be honest, both look identical anyway haha.

Cheers!

  V6 255, 172's, JCW,
Delighted to see it still has the ph1 rear bumper! :) Great work as ever!

Where were you in the Alpes Nickson? I was there for the TdF, watched them go up the Col de Galibier! :) We stayed in Sainte Foy, on the way up to Tignes from Chambrey.. know it?

Thanks mate!

PH1 rear is staying ;)

We were over in Morzine/Les Gets. We watched the Tour last year though, as they came up through the mountain stage, was epic! Helicopters absolutely everywhere! Haha.

Did the caravan come through before the riders and throw all of the free stuff at you? We got quite a lot of stuff last year! :D

Lovely looking phase 1!!!! What size spacers have you got on the front and rear?

Thanks very much mate :)

20mm on the front, and about 7mm+camber shim on the rear :)

Righhhht!

Got a few jobs I wanted doing done and dusted today, the first of which being an oil change as it hasn't been changed in 8k!!!!! Ha.

So we started by jacking the car up and taking the plastic undertray off (you will see why a little later on).
The wheels are also off because I wanted to play around with the camber on the Eibach bolts.

img2011081200214.jpg

Cheeky picture of under the car:

img2011081200219.jpg

New oil and filter ready and willing!

img2011081200220.jpg

We did not have a proper tool to undo the sump plug, I cannot remember how we managed it last time, so this time we made up a little tool just for this job.
Welded a piece of square bar into an old socket, fits perfectly! Job done :).

img2011081200222.jpg

And then got cracking with draining all of the old oil out:

img2011081200221.jpg

I had to remove the fuel rail guard as there was very little space to access the oil filter. Once off it proved much easier to remove the old filter:

img2011081200223.jpg

img2011081200224.jpg

New filter and washer!

img2011081200225.jpg

Old oil just about to stop draining out:

img2011081200227.jpg

Old bolt and new washer ready to be bolted back in now the majority of the oil has drained out:

img2011081200226.jpg

New genuine Renault filter fitted to replace the non-genuine one:

img2011081200229.jpg

Pouring the nice new oil into the head :).

img2011081200228.jpg

Old filter and washer ready for the bin!
Obviously not literally! Ready to be taken down to the local dump and be disposed of correctly.

img2011081200230.jpg

When taking the fuel rail guard off, I noticed the two inlet bolts about it made contact, stopping it from moving when I had removed the guard's bolts.
The two pictured here were to blame:

img2011081200231.jpg

So a little angle grind later, and they all fit without any contact.. Perfect.

img2011081200232.jpg

Before anyone asks, I am not the person wearing the red t-shirt ;).

Job number two was to check that the gearbox mount was all bolted up correctly, as it felt like something was loose:

img2011081200234.jpg

It turned out to be fine, so I have no idea where this "loose" feeling could be coming from. I will investigate further when I have time.

Whilst on the topic of the gearbox, is this supposed to be here:

img2011081200235.jpg

Its a big old rubber wedge between the gearbox and the subframe. I'm guessing its to prevent the gearbox making contact with the subframe, but I wasn't sure if this is standard or has been bodged in by a previous owner/garage?

Next job was one for the MOT, refitting the CAT.. As my friend who may or may not have put the sensor up another exhaust last year to save me the hassle of changing them over is on holiday and unable to do the deed!

Here she is after sitting in the shed for a good 8-9 months!

img2011081200216.jpg

Sitting for so long untouched made the mating face somewhat rusty..

img2011081200217.jpg

Needless to say, this was sorted with a wire wheel on an angle grinder, unfortunately I forgot to take a picture :(.

So, onto the b*****d of a job of removing the decat:

img2011081200237.jpg

After a lot of cursing and release oil, the 4 siezed bolts came undone, and allowed the decat to be removed from the car. Can I make a note, that copious amount of Coppaslip were used when fitting the decat, yet the bolts still siezed, most annoying..

img2011081200236.jpg

Looks exactly the same after 9 months of use!

CAT and Decat:

img2011081200238.jpg

The bolt holes where the CAT meets the rest of the exhaust system are a tad smaller on the CAT than the decat, So instead of finding some new bolts, a few seconds of:

img2011081200240.jpg

Voilà!

img2011081200239.jpg

We then soldiered on to get the CAT refitted, as nether of us enjoyed this job one bit.

About 20 minutes later, she was fitted, safe and sound!

img2011081200244.jpg

img2011081200245.jpg

Done! Ready for the MOT!

Another job I have wanted to do for a while, but has always slipped my mind is the bonnet catch.
After reading some horror stories the other day, I thought it best to give mine a little spruce to prevent the same happening to me!

Removed:

img2011081200241.jpg

Lots of rust and no grease.. Lovely.

img2011081200242.jpg

img2011081200243.jpg

Gave it a wire brush down and smothered the critical joints in grease, so should solve and problems that could have occurred! (I hope).

Also gave the bonnet a little clean up:

img2011081200246.jpg

Greased up and a little less rust, I refitted it:

img2011081200247.jpg

All finished under the car now, so the undertray was refitted, and the car dropped back onto the ground:

img2011081200249.jpg

The last job of the day was to sort out some ECU wires that had been annoying me for some time!
These were the problem:

img2011081200248x.jpg

Note where the induction elbow has worn through the electrical tape, hmm..

Removed it, to allow me some more room:

img2011081200250.jpg

Please also notice the fixed airbox strap!
It had split, but I used some rubber glue and it is good as new for now :approve:

Back on topic.. :p

A better angle of the problem. I didn't want these wires to get damaged, so I had to hatch a plan to keep them from being worn away again..

img2011081200251.jpg

I then found an old innertube hanging up in the garage, that I had previously cut into pieces to use as a chainstay protector on my downhill bike, ah, that could be useful?

img2011081200252.jpg

A bit of initiative, some rubber, some tape and a cable tie later:

img2011081200253.jpg

img2011081200255.jpg

Safe and sound!
That should last a while :d

And that was how I spent my Friday afternoon!

Just to book the MOT now and see what arises!

This is how the car finished the day :)

img2011081200256.jpg

Due to the annoying nature of fitting, and amount of noise and lack of power produced by the decat, it will be found in the for sale section very shortly, along with some other bits and pieces.

Thanks for reading :)

How are you finding the car without the decat? I have been thinking off taking mine off for a few months now as I'm pretty sure all it gives me is a nasty flat spot at about 3.5-4k rpm. Does the car feel better with the cat in?

I would say yes. Definitely.
It feels much nicer to drive, but most of all for me, the noise is much more tolerable.

There is no flatspot that I have noticed since having the cat back on, and all seems well. I have already sold it so there is no putting it back on now :p

Some impressive work been going on there.

I've just fitted a Decat today so after reading this I'll need to see how I find it on mine. My car is mainly used on track so flat spots lower down the rev range is not too much of an issue. I'm just looking for top end.

Thanks mate!

That's one of the reason's I removed the decat. Being my daily run around, it was far too loud for me, and made little difference if any in terms of power.

Hope yours helps sort your flatspot out though!

nice work as always!

Thanks man :approve:

wow absolutly stunning example mate. keep up the good work.

Again, thanks for the kind words :).

The rubber part between the chassis and engine part is normal mate

Ah thanks Damo. I wasn't sure as it just didn't look right, and was just a rock solid piece of rubber. Good to know its supposed to be there though :).

Little update from today:

Went out and gave the car a hell of a good wash inside and out, as I hadn't done it in 4 weeks due to holiday etc.

Pics of said wash:

I am not 100% sure, I unplugged it from under the car where it is easy enough to get to. Don't know if is accessible through the engine bay!

Looks excellent mate. What exhaust do you have? Ktec stealth?

Cheers man.
Yep! Ktec Supersports stealth :).

Ahh okay mate I'll have a quick look, is the plug clipped in by it's self or is ther any others around it do you no?

Sweet. I've just bought the normal stealth system with both boxes I hope it doesn't sit as low as yours does. I've got one of those prima racing mounts hopefully that will help.

Ah that's cool!
The difference is your's will have a centre silencer where mine doesn't. I have a Prima racing mount as well and that is as high as I could get it to sit!

Clean example mate! looking good!

Cheers mate!

Have some updates from today!
As some of you may or may not know, I have been on the lookout for a new set of coilovers.
It just so happened that Bomber (Thanks Dave!) was selling his FK Konigsports from his PH1 172. Having waited for ages looking for another set of coilovers, I went for them, and promptly paid the money.

This morning, without any delay, a nice little package arrived...

dsc01103jj.jpg

dsc01104io.jpg

With the car booked in to get it's geo setup at Ktec this Thursday, there was an urgency to get these fitted and ready to go in and get set up correctly.

Without further ado, I decided to crack on and get it done.

The weather decided not to play ball, and started to rain :(, unphased ;) I carried on.

dsc01114jw.jpg

The old GAZ Coilovers that were scheduled to be removed.

dsc01115yd.jpg

dsc01116cq.jpg

Once I had these removed, I cracked on with getting the FK's built up and ready to bolt up.

dsc01119nb.jpg

This involved removing the ABS wire bracket from the original shocks. All I am going to say is, the bolts didn't want to come off..

dsc01112az.jpg

Once that was done, I fitted the AST top mounts, and slapped the new front coilovers onto the car :)

dsc01117f.jpg

dsc01118t.jpg

With the fronts fitted and bolted up, I started on the rear of the car.
Which proved to be much harder than I had first hoped. Mostly down to seized bolts :(

Got the rear jacked up.

dsc01121optimized.jpg

The old GAZ shocks ready to be removed.

dsc01122a.jpg

dsc01124f.jpg

Sneaky little picture of the Whiteline.

dsc01123xs.jpg

FK's ready to be fitted!

dsc01125ex.jpg

Unfortunately I do not have any more pictures from the fitting, I only have afters!

So, fitted and ready to go!

dsc01131m.jpg

dsc01132b.jpg

Very poor pictures I know

Few better ones ;)

dsc01133za.jpg

dsc01134y.jpg

Back on the floor.

dsc01128ur.jpg

dsc01129pi.jpg

Everything was completely wrong at this point. One side was higher than the other, and the front wheels looked rather.. Deformed..

So I took it for a drive, and wow!

So much smoother and quieter than the GAZ's were. I drove around for a good 10-20 minutes to let everything settle in, and then came home.

The finished stance is exactly what I was after, now that everything has settled it looks much better, Love it!

Few pictures of the finished article.

Haha you reckon?

Rubs a little bit :(, maybe Ktec will be able to sort that :p

They did, but I managed to get a tiny adjustable spanner on them to get them done up tight. That was on the GAZ's so we shall see on the FK's!

Looks brilliant mate awesome coilovers always seems to rain when you want to work on your car.

Cheers mate :)

I know tell me about it! Had 25° sunshine yesterday! Thought I would be lucky for fitting these today.

Nu'uh, weather had a better idea :(

Give it a go!

I tried everything.. Swan neck and open ended spanners, mole grips, but the only thing that actually fitted was a small adjustable spanner. Did the job perfectly, they aren't budging now!

Ah really? Sick! Cannot wait to get mine done , its needed it for a while :p

wow love this good job with the coilovers mate looks spot on.

Cheers mate :D

What you doing with you old rear shocks! Car looks amazing as normal mate! good work

Old coilovers are for sale mate! All in the for sale section!

Prefer the look of your PH1 if I am honest ;)

Nice upgrade on the suspension.

Cheers mate :approve:

Had a play around with the height and damping today, got it pretty much set to where I want now, and the new coilovers feel great

Also gave her a wash as I have neglected it recently, with the recent bout of flooding etc it would have been a waste of time to wash it!

Got some pictures whilst I was there, obviously ;)

Getting the geometry setting up, the brake fluid flushed and replace with Castrol React Performance Dot 4, the airbag light turning off as it has been pissing me off ever since I fitted my OMP wheel and getting the MOT done, as its due on the 31st ;).

Loving the car at the moment, but still looking into getting a Megane 225 , Maybe.. Maybe..

Cheers! :D
