Home now, those rear pads look fucked - did you end up changing them?

The pads were brand new a few hundred miles ago! Haha.

The chewed up pad was pretty bad but its back on the car for now!

So what benefits do you think you'll get from the new top mounts?

dan

Steering felt more direct..

Just seemed to be more sensitive etc.

As for the benefits for the car, I've no idea! Haha.

wow!

i've not heard of that happening before.

It happened to me doing a hot lap on the Nurburgring, pedal went to the floor. Nursed it round and took it back to the hotel, jacked it up to find exactly the same. Managed to get another set of pads fitted to get home

Nickson, a fine example of a phase 1 and looks dam clean

Right, updaaaaaaaates!

Finished work at 12:30, and had planned since I had recieved them through the post that I was going to do them Friday afternoon.

So here they are!
Fitting these:

img2011061000187.jpg

To this:

img2011061000188.jpg

So before I got started, I took a picture of the Ktec mounts still in place:

img2011061000189.jpg

That sight quickly turned into this:

img2011061000190.jpg

And then to this!

img2011061000191.jpg

As you can no-doubt tell. I was very excited to get these mounts fitted. They look so good!

Strut no.1 ready to be disassembled!

img2011061000192.jpg

After I had managed to remove the Ktec mount from the strut. I went to fit the AST mount.
The spring mount that came with the AST mounts were slightly too big for the GAZ springs. This meant a bit of modification was needed to get them to fit! So a bit of filing later, I had them fitting like a charm, and bolted the mount all up.

img2011061000195.jpg

Ready to go back on!

img2011061000196.jpg

And then got it bolted up to the car:

img2011061000194.jpg

(You can see the holes from the Ktec mounts, I wish there was something I could do to cover them :()

So, without further ado, I quickly removed the passenger side strut and got cracking with fitting the new mount!

img2011061000197.jpg

(Had to ratchet strap the hub to the wishbone, as this side had the tendancy to lean a bit too far, which started to pull on the brake hose!)

Unfortunately no pictures for this side, but as you will expect, exactly the same as the drivers side ;). There was a fair amount of material that had to be removed from the inside of the spring for this side. Not sure why, but once that was out of the way and the collar fitting snug, I bolted up and away we went!

Once that was done. Camber bolts were re-inserted, and both sides were bolted back up!

img2011061000199.jpg

img2011061000198.jpg

Finished article

img2011061000200.jpg

Looking rather mean on axle stands

img2011061000201.jpg

img2011061000203.jpg

img2011061000205.jpg

img2011061000204.jpg

img2011061000202.jpg

Once they were fitted, I put the wheels back on, lowered her back to the ground and noticed that I couldnt remove the jack from underneath..
The car had become lower with the new mounts. Not entierly sure how.. They must have a lower stack height than the Ktecs. I did like the look of it a bit lower though, so went for a test drive, to see if my investment was worthwhile!

Wow!

Much better than the old mounts!
Unfortunately, for the first time in its history with me. The car was scraping..
This was how low she was running..

img2011061000206.jpg

Only the tyre on the arch linings, but scrubbing is scrubbing, and was unacceptable!

I jacked it back up, and rose the ride height by 2cm either side.

Went out again.

But still, the same scrubbing.

Not sure what elese could be causing it! only happens when turning left and on the drivers side. Both wheels appear to be in the same position in the arch. With the top mounts set in the same position, the camber bolts at equal camber (by eye) and the height the same. Not sure.

The car is going in for a full setup soon, so hopefully that will sort the scrubbing out, but with a little less camber on both front wheels, it looks so much wider and mean! (I will get some good pictures tomorrow once I have washed it).

Almost forgot this one!
This is how it looked at the end of the day:

img2011061000207.jpg

I very worthwhile modification IMO, very happy with them!

Cheers guys!

EDIT: Almost forgot..
I was complaning about a knocking noise coming from the Ktec mounts, as it only appeared once I had fitted them.
Unfortunately, the noise has continuted with the brand new AST mounts. Meaning the coilovers or some other component is to blame.
Not very noticable, but enough to annoy my OCD-like eye for problems.

Why did you choose to fit the mounts at the 5,6,7 o'clock position? Got mine fitted at a motorsport garage and they said it was far more beneficial to fit them 6,7,8 o'clock on the drivers side and 4,5,6 o'clock on the passenger side. Said it was for better castor adjustment as the kw's has good camber adjustment anyway.

They look damn good in the engine bay dont they!

I fitted them in the position to give maximum positive camber for now, until they get seyup correctly!
I only did that because I read that Clios suffer from too little positive castor
I'm probably wrong at any rate, but they will do for now!

They look awesome in the engine bay mate, love the look of them!

Great work mate, fancy sorting me out with the old ones? I wouldn't mind giving them a go.

As for the knocking, when is it? I'm going to suggest balljoints?

Oh and a question: what spacers are you running? Ta.

Cheers buddy! PM'ed ;)

Knocking is when hitting any type of bump. I think I have figured it out!

My drive shafts had very small marks on them from where they had been hitting the chassis. And then penny dropped this morning that that must be what the knocking is!

Will be raising the car again today to see if I can get it to stop!

Spacers are FK Hubcentric ones, 20mm from Venom Motorsport mate :)

Get them fitted!

Ahh thats annoying. Some people have a mixture of black and orangefor the lower part so you got lucky you only had one colour :p

Another little update.

I bought some rear camber shims from Ktec a few days back, and recieved them today:

img2011061100211.jpg

Bought them on the premise that it looked a little silly having just camber on the front.

Only went for 0.5°, as I can always buy 1° if I feel 0.5° isn't enough.

It's a little weird that they are made from plastic. With the torque setting of the bolts between the axle and the hub, it makes me think they will be crushed.

I expected them to be made from metal, meh, we shall see! Might be fitting them this afternoon, weather permitting as its pouring down at the minute!

It's changed a bit
So has your's Dave! Your car looks amazing!

The AST's are so good, much better than the Ktec's.

Where do you go to get yours setup? Need the car doing but not sure where to go!

Riiiight!

I wanted to try and get my rear camber shims fitted yesterday, but having looked at whats involved with doing so (removal of discs etc), I thought best to leave it for another day, and have a spacer made up 5 or so mm to go with the shim to space the rear wheels a little bit, to get them more in-line with the fronts.

Instead, I decided to work on the height and camber of the front and rear, to try and stop the rubbing I am experiencing since fitting the AST Top Mounts.

Worked on it most of the afternoon.
I ended up removing the Eibach camber bolts altogether and just using the AST mounts to adjust the camber and castor.
Got the front set up as well as I could, very very little rubbage, still not sure why its rubbing, as it didnt rub before the AST mounts were fitted.

Went out in the evening to watch the sunset, so got a few pictures of the Clio whilst there ;).

I think I have got both ride heights pretty much spot on, few little pictures:

Chrudat, apart from that you've got it just right.

Wheels, perfect, cup spoiler, perfect, lows, perfect, have a full geometry on it and do the dash, nothing else needed.

 Thanks man!

Where to go for the full geometry though? I've no idea who are good, and who aren't!

I've got some PH1 rear clusters on the way for the rear to see what that looks like :).

Dash and interior is definitely definitely next! I have been looking at possibly ITB's also, but that is for another day ;)

Love the way this car looks, love the mechanical upgrades.

Its what mine would be if I had the money

Thanks very much mate!

All the money has definitely been worth it!

Just a few more things left to do! :D

Right a few little updates.

There has been a knocking on the front of the car ever since I first fitted my Ktec top mounts.
I thought it was the mounts to begin with.
But since fitting my AST's, the knocking is still there, so something else must be the problem.

So I have bought new ball joints and track rod ends for now, and will see if that cures the very apparent, and very annoying knocking from the front.

Also, as shown in a previous update, I have bought some camber shims from Ktec, only the 0.5 versions as I do not want silly camber, but something to suit the front. I also felt the need to space the rear wheels. But to save the bearings, I did not go for Hubcentric spacers, and seeing as I was going to fit the camber shims, I had the old man make up some spacer plates for the rear.

The parts as pictured:

img2011061500230.jpg

The thicknesses of the spacers:

img2011061500231.jpg

They are 7mm and 10mm respectively.
As I said. Not going for silly space and camber, but something different from normal.

Also, the car is still awaiting a brake fluid and oil flush, and a full geometry setup. I just have no time to get it all done!

Cheers

Some updates from todays work!

I set about fitting the new bottom balljoints and track rod ends, in an attempt to quash the annoying knocking from the front of the car when going over any type of bump.

The parts that I was to be fitting:

img2011061800232.jpg

Started work, but with the weather today being absolute shite, we had to keep stopping and standing in the garage for 5-10 minutes to let the rain showers past.

Took much longer than I was expecting to be honest, the balljoints were an absolute b**ch to remove, but we soldiered on in the cold and wet to get it done and out of the way with.

Finished pics, everything bolted up and ready to go!

(Ignore the rust on the discs, I did say it started to rain )

img2011061800236.jpg

img2011061800237.jpg

img2011061800241.jpg

img2011061800242.jpg

I noticed that the calipers and surrounding components were looking a little orange and nasty, so I wirebrushed them down, and gave them a quick "Hammeriting" in satin black, to keep everything looking neat and tidy!

Pics:

img2011061800235.jpg

img2011061800240.jpg

Almost forgot, the old balljoints and track rod ends:

img2011061800238.jpg

Also..

Since I fitted the spacers on the front, the wheel bolts have always appeared not to screw in correctly. I set about sorting this problem today, as I feared the threads may be getting damaged as each time I remove the wheel, some thread has been stripped and it comes out in razor sharp pieces :(.
The thread on the wheel bolts protruded through the wheel longer than the thread in the spacer. Basically, the thread protruded 20.70mm on average, where as the spacer is only 20mm wide.

Woops!

So we set about grinding the first thread off of each wheel bolt, to prevent it from foulding the face of the disc when the wheel is fitted:

img2011061800239.jpg

This cured the problem perfectly, no more tight wheel bolts!

Also whilst the front of the car was jacked, I decided to have another play with the setting of the top mounts, as the drivers side was still rubbing!
I set the mounts to full camber instead of half camber half castor:

img2011061800233.jpg

img2011061800234.jpg

Made very little to no difference... Bugger.

Will be taking the car into Ktec asap to get these problems sorted, as they are very very annoying!

Apart from that the car is great! No problems whatsover

Cheers!

12mm are your friend Rob, They come about 8mm out of the hub and then will take another 30 minutes to remove the rest of them!! pain in the ass job!

Looks great Nickson, I have set mine to full caster and used the camber bolts to adjust the camber, give that a go it may solve your problem.

I've done balljoints before, just making sure he put the right size ones in, otherwise they knock.

I know nothing about track rod ends, but I will be changing those now :)

Good work mate :)

Track rod ends eh??

Something I've never done.

What size balljoints did you buy? The 12mm or the 10mm??

Haha cheers mate!

Unsure on what size I bought and used.. I just bought ones from NWPerformance for a Clio 172/182 and they fitted like a charm!

Did the track rod ends as I was doing the balljoints and thought why not. Doesn't feel any different, just something that is less likely to go wrong from now on haha.

Cheers James!

I will be having that done, just going to get Ktec to do it, as I do not trust myself setting it up. Best to get it done properly and not have to worry about it anymore :).

They don't knock thank god! In fact, a lot of the noise has disappeared since fitting that lot. Also.. I think the rest will disappear when I next drive it.

I found that the top nut on the AST mounts had come loose on the drivers side, AGAIN.. How on earth do you do it up tight? My sockets and spanners are too wide to fit in the hole! ;) oioi.

Had a bit of a cleaning session on the car today. I haven't washed it in a few weeks due to the weather being absolute rubbish.

It rained this morning, so we went for a ride. Came back this afternoon and the sun was shining. What better time to wash the car eh? :)

Excuse the poor pics, they were taken on my Blueberry..

I have managed to make a list of things to do! Yay.

PH1 lights should come this week, so I will slap them on and see how they look!
Going to refurb the headlights. I had a friend make a few passes over them with a machine polisher. Look a hell of a lot nicer, but could still be better!
Full geo setup.
Oil and filter change.
Brake fluid flush.
Wheel refurb (undecided on colour, but silver is looking the more likely atm)
EDIT: Oh, and fit the rear spacers and camber shims :)

And that is all!

Cheers, Nick.

I have exactly the same issue with my AST's! I may ring Curtis and see if he has an improved bolt setup now as I saw some at JMS with a different bolt setup.

i had the same problem when i bought 20mm spacers, i sent them back and got 25's instead.

also thought about painting the spacers? i think they would look better black ;)

I'm glad it's not just me!
Let me know if there is a newer bolt system please mate, it's very annoying coming loose every few hundred meters!

What problem? :p Rubbage? Did the extra 5mm sort it?
Bit of irony really, as I originally bought 25mm's, but the next day I had a phone call saying them didn't have any in stock, would I like to change to either 30 or 20.

Opted for 20's as 30's seemed a little too much poke!

I havent't thought about it if I'm honest. Maybe I'll get them anodised ;).

yeah i dont like the look of seeing spacers behind the wheel.

nah with the bolts being longer than the spacers the wheel was never fully tight

Ah right.
Well I could quite easily get them anodised.. Pretty sure they are made from Aluminium.

Ha! It was a bit annoying!
10 minutes with the grinder quickly sorted them problem though :D

If we combined mine and his, we'd have a car-gasm.

When I get my f1's and spacers on, I'll be winning ;)

The ph1 lights should have a bulb holder thing just like the ph2's!!!
