Paint, Sandpaper & A Sunday Morning

Rob

ClioSport Moderator
Well I was awoken early this morning, which is normally a no go for me on the weekends, so I decided to do something useful(ish) with my time, popped to halfords, bought a sandpaper sponge, a 1" paint brush and a tin of matt black paint....

Engine tidy up time....

As it was...

(Notice the JMS breather in the wrong place)

After a bit of love...

Before engine cover:

Engine cover on:

(Note the breather now better located by cutting down the existing Renault tubing I was using and creating a small adapter)

Cheers all :)

It was just halfords matt black VHT paint Danielson, can try find if you need it?

Little tin, £4 or something, then used halfords own sanding sponge type thing and it polished the letters up a treat, properly happy :)

Overall cost, less than a tenner, time taken 1.5 hours, done.

I can't help thinking that I'd do the Metal to the left of the plenum and then just remove the engine cover completely??

Cheers for advise on the carpet, I'll give it a go, I thought it was pretty much ruined, so I'm not sure how far I'll get TBH. LOL!

Yeah I just painted it in situ mate, no problems doing it like that, less hassle and takes so little time.

Removed nothing other than the engine cover mate, just painted it where it was.

Good job, going to do mine this week. As asked above.. did you paint yours with the inlets on?

As above :)

Aye leave the cover off, looks nice.

looks much better mate, but i would leave the cover off tbh

Yeah I'm thinking about leaving the cover off, although I paid for the engine cover, so I kinda want it on :( lol!!

Must say though, it does look quite "mean" off.

The dyson just took all the crap of strate away, was very surprise how good it was! Did under the actual bonnet as well an that looks great aswell

Btw, i like the engine cover on, makes it look clean. Maybe do it black to keep it looking mean?

There's a link to the exact paint I used earlier in the thread, just halfords, VHT matt black paint. I'll give the dyson a go later, lol!

Just used a 1" brush mate, not very difficult at all, as for the letters, I painted the whole thing, then rubbed over it with some fine sand paper on a sanding block, because the letters are raised, the paint removes perfectly leaving a nice shiney silver "RENAULTsport" logo.

If you had more patience and the engine wasn't hot like mine, then you'd have no brush marks at all, I have a few, but its quite a rough and rustik looking thing, so I quite like it as is.

If you wanted to get less brush marks etc, you could use a foam brush, its like a normal paint brush, but instead of brissles, it has a chunk or foam/sponge cut into a triangle. Works very well and leaves no lines.

Like this a lot! Huge improvement :)

Cheers mate.

Cheers mate, haven't used the polishing kit yet, only because the halfords "sanding sponge" (which is like a thick washing up cloth thing with sand paper on) has made the letters amazingly shiny!!! lol!

I may just give it back to you tbh, but I'm gonna give it a go on my gear knob first, really wanna make that mint, as the few scratches ruin it :(

dont suppose you have a link to the sand papar block? was it rough sandpaper to get the surface smooth or rough? new to this so any help is appreciated

I can take a pic of it when I get home, I used a halfords sanding sponge to sand it to start with, being so soft and bendy made it easy to sand it all/get in all the nooks and crannies.

I then painted the whole thing, then just used a standard sanding block, you can use a chunk of wood if you wish as its just a flat surface, this means you can only touch the lettering.

I'll try find you a cheap sanding block link, or at least a halfords one so you know what you're looking for.

thank you robbos!! does it take long to sand and what finish you meant to have after sanding? smooth or rough so paint can stick? still deciding whether i want gloss or matt black yet lol

The sand paper leaves you with a smooth-ish finish, but due to it being sanded, its keyed so the paint sticks, it doesnt matter if it feels totally smooth to touch, I sanded it with what looks to be somewhere around a 500 grit, but its a guess, as its just down as "medium" on the halfords sponge thing.

It took me about 20 mins to sand, if that, its just a case of cleaning any surface dirt off etc, and giving it a quick rub over, its only the engine so not like a panel that needs be perfect.

Whole thing took around 1.5 hours.

Cheers.

Could be a lot worse Mike, you're lucky you can do so much yourself/at work, whats the actual damage?

I really need to sort out my sticking caliper next, its squealing like a b**ch!
