There are too many people on this thread who are just guessing/preaching on subjects they dont know about.

explain?

i almost swapped my clio 16v for a PGT running a SEB 3 setup with about 170bhp and when i test drove it, it wasnt as quick as my valver

How many people have actually owned a punto turbo. Just because someone has driven one once doesnt mean anything, turbo cars are all different and you have to learn how to drive each one.
I bet most people here have never even driven a punto turbo?

ive driven 3

One with 200bhp (This was quick - traction was a prob though - loved it!)

One with 170bhp (Wasnt too quick at all) it was a lads off puntosports called CopperGT - was going to swap it for my valver but wasnt impressed at all.

And a standard one. This was awfully slow but i think this had a couple problems and i dont judge any other PGT by it. hence why i didnt buy it

depends on the car then tom

mine was a gt3 had only performance mods, it used piss all over my cousins 16v

i had it when i used to drive a little silly, i gave a 172 cup a pasting in it and waved as i flew bye!

accel was mad in it, once u know how to drive the car it was so much fun

never struggled to hit 140, just got there!

regret ever selling it really, it rocked!

puntos do have a bad image and most of them are thrashed

i still had my 16v when i bought my gt and as soon as i got the gt i knew how much quicker it was

  Mr2 Roadster

Im not slatting Puntos.

I love them, almost bought one but bought my Uno instead. I had it up at 220bhp at one point but traction was an issue in the first three gears.

I just dont like people compairing their clios to other cars they know little about.

Ahh right fair enough. i just asked the question because ive never been in or driven a 172 but have the punto.

Just wondered what the case was. dean yours sounded quick! lol The one with 170bhp wasnt really. Think it all depends on the car.

Not being funny but get with the programme - Renault arent exactly the best made cars in the world now are they.

Theres people on here with BRAND spanking new 182s that go wrong. 172s that randomly catch fire. Wont even get started on mk1s. How you can you say Fiats are bad when you all drive something built by the French. The people that annoy us by being too close and moaning all the time.

My mates Punto has been running 18psi on standard internals, injectors - not even mapped it. Makes 165bhp and has been fine for over 2 years.

Find me a Clio that hasnt had something go tits up for over 2 years.

Yea i watched the video of the race and the camera man sounded like he was part of the 5bhp sunstrip crew..

I know of Puntoboy GT off the site aswell.. hes local geeky fella.. with an chavved up 1.2.

If by 1.2 you mean 1.4 GT turbo conversion with 160+ bhp then yes, I suppose youd be correct. Fool.

like tom20v sed they all seem to be chavs, most chavs seem to think that an air filter ads 30BHP to a car lol!!!

but anyways not come up againt a quick PGT yet, even my girlfriend in her zetec s did one off the lights untill the boost kicked in n blu her of the PRIVATE TEST TRACK

Am I to take it that you believe your valver is quicker than a GT? Lol.

FYI Ive actually raced someone from here around a track in a standard GT and had it pretty even (you might know the chap - goes by the name of yoz? ;) )- so any GT remotely modified would kill a valver... forget the corners because a valver with an exhaust and other fancy bits and pieces is nothing like as quick as a GT with some bits.

I say forget the corners, because hell have already left you far enough behind on the previous straight.

The fact is, regardless of the poor build quality, the GT is a light car and has a turbo. Turbos are renowned for being more tuneable for less money, and as such, are easier and cheaper to make reasonably quick (170+ bhp).

Im in the Milton Keynes area, if anyone with a tuned valver fancies a play, give me a shout.

Oh, and Ill add, Im not saying the GT is the be all and end all, because it isnt. Youd need a reasonable amount of money to make them handle well, and only a modified version will stay with a 172 - and still get eaten on the bends.

As Ive said on PSC though, it comes down to the driver at the end of the day. As for being chavvy, I think some 172 owners need to look at the kids buying 172s nowadays.

@ yoz: I guess you can see a real irony in my supporting the GT over a valver lol.

  Mr2 Roadster

mr_merc, you are quite correct, I was running 170-180 on stock internals, when at 220bhp, which was only for a short while it was also fine, thats nearly twice the original BHP!!!
Id like to see a clio that could run that higher BHP without going bang.

Whats a Seb 3???? Do you mean Seb2 GT3?

I have a Punto GT and am getting a 182. Now, a standard GT vs standard 172 means the 172 will win everytime. The reason the Punto boys think the punto is so great is that ours are all chipped, filter, bleed, zaust etc etc which means pretty modded. But, a GT WILL surprise a lot of cars once on the move, and until you have driven one (not been in one as the driver may not actually be able to drive) you wont be able to comment. For the price they are excellent, and reliable whatever anyone says. Unless you dont klnow how to look after a car, but then 172/182s go wrong too!

^^^
100% true Dan.

He had lots more straight line speed, I was using the course to my advantage, carrying lots of speed in the corners, meaning he wasnt close enough to overtake on the straights. But he did catch me up very quickly.

and mr jimma... i thought yours wasnt quite standard on that day? boost was up wasnt it?

;-)

"@ yoz: I guess you can see a real irony in my supporting the GT over a valver lol." what irony ;-)

Lol, I struggle to remember now to be honest, I would have had to say that anyway to keep a bit of pride against the astra turbo boys ;-)

iirc, mine didnt even have an airfilter on it at that point.

Wow calm down there! I actually like GTs and have almost bought one a couple of times!

I had a clio 16v (now sold) with a filter, Chip, decat and exhaust and it was quicker than the GT i drove as i said above with a full SEB 3 setup. If you dont beleive me get onto Puntosports and ask CopperGT as it was his car.

Not saying it would be quicker than them all but in this case it was. What am i supposed to beleive in the one case i know of?!

Also my mate has a GTT which my clio used to spank. i dont speak of this though as its on 18s so not really a fair case.

Just found the spec of the one i drove:-

Seb2, Bleed Valve set to 15 Psi, exhaust and decat, and a diff downpipe

  300bhp MR2 Turbo

It proves the point that no matter how good a car is at corners something that "can get round them" but has more power can compete.

So hes changed it then? because I know for a fact he used to have a CHAVVED up 1.2... buddy..

So hop back in your oh so fast little 1.4 turbo and scoot back over to your little website and ask him.. fool. I think youll find i am correct.. :p

At the end of the day it is a turbo car and we all know turbo cars are easy to make alot faster.

For example:

Renault 5 GT
Toyota Starlet GT
Escort RS Turbo
Nissan Pulsar GTIR
Fiat Uno Turbo
Fiat Coupe 20v Turbo

All can be made pretty rapid for smaller amounts of cash than a N/A engined car.
At the end of the day Fiat Puntos really arent as bad as people think. My father-in-law in italy only has a 1.2 8v but that is still pretty nippy and doesnt handle that bad for what it is. We went round the Amalfi coast last week and the little motor was happy pulling out the bends in 3rd with 4 people in it. Their easerly as well put together as French hatches such as Clios, Saxos and 106s. Although he reckons the Punto is miles better built than his old Uno was.

Your statement was a pathetic dig that he has a 1.2 Punto. He hasnt. Re read your post "buddy".

mr_merc, go back to puntoland. youre bad enough over there!! causing random arguements.

After alls said and done though, I would rather have a 172/182 over the punto any day of the week!

my apologies, Id forgotten you were all knowledgeable about GTs, and now seemingly 172/182s. So when are you getting a 172? Lol.

This wasnt the argument. Most people would rather have a 172/182 over a GT. The GT is over 10 years old now, rattles, is poorly built and doesnt handle well.

I just think GT owners have misconceived ideas about what "beating" really means, and 172 owners seem to have misconceived ideas about GTs all being slow chav cars.

I know nothing Jimma, just think youre a tit! lol. Not getting a 172. 182.

@ Lloyd: Lol, if youre not into bodywork and bodykits then no, I agree, its not my cup of tea either. But the chap is a genuinely nice guy, and an enthusiast and has done the conversion himself, along with all the necessary parts and bits and pieces - this has to be worth something in my book.

Unfortunately because of said bodykit the owner will get tarred with the same brush.... but as I said before, its happening with 172s now.

Too true.. and the I hate fact its happening with 172/182s now. So excuse me if im biased but when I met the guy hed spent probably more than the cars worth on all that Re-spray, fibreglass, ice, 17s when the engine had little power to move the car.. ironic?

If hes done a conversion fair enough I was unaware of that.. but ott bodykitted cars arent my thing either... so naturally yea.. he is going to get tarred with the same brush. fair comment.

I still miss my GT..... :(

They have their faults (as does everything else) but they shouldnt be under-estimated. Even standard ones have 145lb/ft torque compared to the 182s 148lb/ft and they are slightly lighter - admittedly, not by much.

The single biggest fault with them is that the car corners on the Wednesday, when you turned the steering wheel on Monday. And on the standard little 14s, its very easy to understeer.

The fact that I owned mine for over 6 years proves that it had lasting appeal...

  300bhp MR2 Turbo

My mates had his for 1/2 years, he bought it from his brother who had it for 2-3 years. Only thing to go wrong with it was an exhaust gasket.

Not bad for an 8 year old car with nearly 70k on the clock running 18psi of boost.

  EVO VII

170 bhp GT would be quicker IMO.

they are very very light, if driven well it would do a 14 sec 1/4 no problem

150bhp GTTs can do 14.5 with road tyres no problem. so the same could be said for fiat gts

but yet again we are talking about modified cars vs standard  ????? the only fair comparsion would be standard vs standard.

erm.

I really dont think a PGT would stand a chance against a 172.

/y0z
yoz - i disagree, standard for standard i agree, but speak to some of the boys on ex-psc with modified ones.

I had a 98S GT3, and ran around 160bhp on mine, i would say it would have stuck with my 172 cup in a straight line drag.

My punto was a great car, i loved it, a far better car then my clio (better built too), ok, so it wasnt as dynamic or as quick round the bends, but buckets of fun never the less.

Ps - the guy who says punto sports is full of chavs - take a look around, people in glass houses and all that !

Regards

Jonathan

  clio 172 cup

ive raced one on a drag stip and nailed him he said it had 210 bhp it was quick but as soon as i got into 2nd i just left him

  2005 Impreza WRX STI

u wouldnt beat a 210 bhp punto mate, he was either a rubbish driver or lying!;)

[however....i do notice u have a cup!!!] ;)

  Titanium 182

it would of took loads of work to get it 210bhp

if it really was at that power u wouldnt have left him!

there was a 200bhp red one quite close to me that had a race with my mates uncles integra type R and had it on acceleration!

Who the hell do you think you are Lloyd v? A local boy are we? I see plenty of, as you put it, "chavved" up Clios around here.

And you’re wrong. My car HAS NEVER BEEN a 1.2.

Yes I did start off with a small engine, insurance was cheap and running costs were low, and so what if I have a body kit etc...

And just because I drive a kitted car I am a chav? How very small minded.

I guess I’ll have to go off and slit my wrists now someone has called me a chav, boo hooo :(

anywhooo...

Puntos are not the quickest cars in the world, FACT. I love the GT conversion I have done and I love my Punto, just as much as I’m sure some people on here love their Clio’s. I’ve put a lot of hard work building my car how I like it, and I’m aware not everyone will like my car. I can take criticism, but a person just merely sl*gging my car off is a different matter.

I’m not a fan of any French cars... never owned one, however many of my friends have and my father does also. Based on this I do not like them, sorry if that offends but you cannot please everyone.

back on the subject of this post, I personally have never raced a Clio 172 or 182 in my GT. but tuned GTs are quicker that you think and can surprise a lot of other people in there higher powered cars.
