RenaultSport Clio 182 Trophy – Major Paint Correction Detail

Three weeks ago, the Clio came out of the bodyshop having had the entire front end (wings, bonnet and bumper), mirror caps, handles and rear bumper sprayed. Overall, it is a very clean car – a credit to the owner! Wheels, arches and shuts were all spotless!

My task? Remove the unsightly defects and address the horrific buffertrails found on the freshly ‘finished’ paintwork.

Heh, I see that Scorpion exhaust gets a bit hot then!

DSC_0009.webp

Not much to document in the wash stage. The usual pre-rinse, pre-soak, two bucket system etc.

AutoSmart Tardis lifting a couple of tar spots that were dotted around:

DSC_0012.webp

The vehicle was clayed by the owner just a week before the detail – for peace of mind though, I had to give it a go myself.

Indeed, the paintwork was clean. Only a few stray tar deposits lifted in this occasion:

DSC_0014.webp

DSC_0013.webp

Brought inside and blown dry with the black baron to remove trapped water from grilles, shuts, crevices, badges etc

DSC_0022.webp

OK. Paint inspection. First up, the original paint (non-resprayed panels)

Roof, pretty tidy:

DSC_0029.webp

Spoiler, again, not looking too bad (some mild holograms spotted there on the gloss black brake light)

DSC_0030.webp

Starting to spot patches of overspray from the recent spray work as I walk down the O/S:

DSC_0032.webp

DSC_0034.webp

Was worse than I originally thought:

DSC_0035.webp

DSC_0036.webp

And now for the new panels (bonnet, bumpers, front wings, mirrors and door handles)

Wing:

DSC_0052.webp

Ouch. Here, they don’t look ‘too’ bad! Red is a tough one to photograph a lot of the time.. Because of that, I nipped the car back out into the sun for a better idea (excuse the awful white balance on the following pics)

DSC_0058.webp

DSC_0065.webp

DSC_0060.webp

DSC_0063.webp

But then “what’s this?” Some nasty machine marks spotted on the N/S/R quarter (original paint)

DSC_0064.webp

18 months ago, soon after the owner first brought the car, it was handed over to a specialist for a paint enhancement/correction detail. Whoops.

Back inside and the bonnet might aswel be white, not red. A truly awful finish!

DSC_0073.webp

A few thickness readings on the front end:

And my first 50/50:

DSC_0081.webp

DSC_0082.webp

DSC_0084.webp

DSC_0085.webp

This correction took time and effort. The buffertrails were deep. To chase out, I was having to hit it hard and dropping back a step at a time to then further refine to a flawless finish.

DSC_0093.webp

DSC_0094.webp

DSC_0095.webp

I soon learnt that the original paint was much trickier to work with than that of the resprayed areas… A hard finish with gruesome defects in that needed chasing out, but, at the same time, marked easily and proved quite a challenge to correct/refine properly!

B-pillars before/after:

Remember those holograms and faint swirls on the spoiler?

DSC_0120.webp

DSC_0121.webp

Err, rain. Heavy rain! (Good job we had the unit!)

DSC_0128.webp

Working late, I continue to hit the original paint on the O/S with a mix of rotary and DA polishers:

DSC_0133.webp

Before/After:

DSC_0131.webp

DSC_0137.webp

Morning of day 2, flip reverse things and I’m working down the N/S.

Finished that roof off – only combination I could use here was the Dual Action polisher with a green 3M Cutting pad and Menz S500 for cut. Each quarter of the N/S of the roof took 3+ hits to get perfect. Tiiiiimely process.

Heh, as you can see… I’m not happy.

Results were good tho – before/afters:

*Oooopft!* “Gizz your colour!” (the evening sun shining through the unit)

N/S door, complete with more overspray:

Sill was heavily scratched. Lake Country wool and Menz S500 used to hit 95% correction.

DSC_0205.webp

DSC_0208.webp

DSC_0209.webp

…an interesting one though; the N/S sill hadn’t got a clearcoat (but yet the O/S had!?)

DSC_0207.webp

Slow, painful progress. End of day 2.

DSC_0211.webp

Morning of day 3 was spent finalising the machine work – rear lights, N/S/F wing and both the front and rear bumpers.

DSC_0213.webp

Even the lights had buffertrails on them!

Correction looks promising:

DSC_0236.webp

From here, I was a little rushed. Collection was near (earlier than expected) so little time was spent documenting the rest of the day.

Rinsed to remove polishing dust. Dried down. IPA (isopropyl alcohol) to remove remaining oils and then Blackfire Wet Diamond paint sealant was applied:

DSC_0242.webp

And finished…(Ashamed to say, but, to get right, this one took me 26 hours! (worth it in the end though))

I just knew when i seen the title that this was going to look epic when you were finished and i was not wrong!

Such a top colour when finished like that and its nice to see a car like that back to its former glory. Well done dude ;)

Thanks guys.

I can't seem to get on very well with Clio's.. They're tricky to get 'right!'

That's awesome work.

What happened with the clear coat or lack of it on the N/S?

Did you find that Menz stuff worked best or is that your product of choice on the Trophy paintwork? I seem to struggle to get decent correction on mine (mainly using britemax and megs compounds on britemax pads) but only used a DA though. If you were closer you'd have another to Trophy to do ;)

Hi guys this is my car Jim has saved the day as you could see the car was in aright state before and now it looks superb. All I can say is that if you want your car detailing Jim is your man his attention to detail is amazing so thanks again Jim il'l be in contact about the other issue when it has been sorted.:approve:

Great work! Shame there was not one spot of wax or anything on there before. Come out to it's formerglory tho. Loveeeeeeeeeelly

Jim, as always.... Overwhelmed by the time you put in to your work and the results you seem to consistently achieve!!

Would love a full correction detail by someone in the know at some point!

I need mine done, id ask you but you would probably tell me to do one when you see the state of it :o

Addicted it was a major paint correction so you're looking at £330 + depending on the state of your car...

Jim if you looked as happy as you do in that picture when you did my car no wonder you wanted to burn it ;)

Awesome work as ever, looking forward to your next Clio detail and write up probably more than you are!

P.s....You forgot Harpham’s 200 in your collection :)

Fantastic work as always.

I really need to sort out some respray work on mine, and plan a summer paint correction :/

First up, to have an ounce of that kind of talent i'd be a happy man. Simply fantastic correction and almost rectification work. Very tricky job.

Now onto the problem in the first place, that bodyshop should be brought to task over that. Nothing short of f*cking horrendous and gives every bodyshop in the country a bad name. No wonder I hear day after day that "it's hard to find a decent bodyshop that you can trust". To send that kind of work out the door in inexcusable.

Even forgetting the holograms. We all know how most bodyshops polish cars. The overspray is simply shocking, a lot of the time it comes from the polythene cover lifting and sticking to the paintwork. It looks exactly like that.

Where else did you find pad transfer Jim? Good chance that it's been painted somewhere small that would assume the Capsicum Red is solid colour. It's clearly Clear overbase.

Sanding marks still in the paint. I'd also like to hear from the owner regarding accepting the work when it was picked up from the bodyshop.

Fantastic as per sir!

I'm yet to have a good experience with a bodyshop...

Also when I detailed JonG's capsicum 1.2 from on here, that had pad transfer on the rear and front bumpers!

Hi Gally when I picked up the car it had been washed and looked good, I always knew the car would come back with buffer trails and holograms as its what I have come to expect with most bodyshops, I know that it shouldnt be the case but sadly that is the way it is. I didnt expect that level of overspray and didnt notice all of it as I didnt check it under halogen lighting as the car was outside when I oicked it up. The car was always going to get detailed regaurdless to the bodyshop finish as they do not have the attention to detail that detailers have. Jim has brought the car back to life and I hope to keep it that way.:D

Yup paint correction > respray all day long!

And that's from a bodyshop assessor. Just glad you got it sorted mate.

Thanks again all.

It's not great, but, here's a little vid that I threw together late last night to show the video footage of the buffertrails (vid's not the best, it was late, I was rushed (and I'd had beer(s))

The lack of clear on the N/S sill was news to the owner... That was the only area that suffered from it - thought originally it could have been lifted overspray but there were many more areas similar to that of the sill that suffered from the overspray that DIDNT have pad transfer. Must be from a previous life...

Menz is my 'go to' at the minute still. Using their S500 and it's great (infact, just depleted my first bottle today (two more on order)) With the DA, I had to go for looooooOOONG periods with many overlapping passes and several hits to get the results. I was using the green 3M cutting pad and Menz S500. Clio paint is tough; relatively hard, so, you need to go aggressive to make 'that' difference but then at the same time can be delicate and sometimes struggle to finish well. What are the Megs compounds? 83 & 84? Certainly worth looking into Menz S500 (ooh, whilst I think about it, Megs actually have a new DA wool system coming out... Also worth checking out from what I hear!)

Hi Pete. Thanks again buddy.

The car's a real credit to you - you should have no probs keeping on top of it from now!

Great work! Shame there was not one spot of wax or anything on there before. Come out to it's formerglory tho. Loveeeeeeeeeelly

"One spot of wax?" Whats made you say that?! The car, as above, was actually in a real good/tidy/clean condition!

absolutely fantastic, the transformation is unreal!
just for information for myself, what "treatment" did this car go under (so i know roughly how much it cost :))

As stated by Shot_corpse, it's dependant on overall timings taken which is relative to vehicle condition. Best to make direct contact if you'd like to know more. Thanks

I need mine done, id ask you but you would probably tell me to do one when you see the state of it :o

haha! Can't be that bad... Trust, I've seen some pretty bad examples! (not Clio's, I might add!)

See, I didn't foget Harp's, just, it wasn't a 182 so thought it was a little unfair to include it in the line-up! :)

"next clio detail and write up", ugh... *shudders*

Thanks man.

Only that one area RE the pad transfer (N/S sill)

To be fair, it was noted between us, that, holograms etc aside, the paintwork wasn't actually that bad. Those sanding marks that were on the bonnet; only ones I found! Overspray, yeah, ok.. But the actual finish once correctly machined was pretty impressive. Just a shame it was ruined in the final stages by their poor finishing!

Will have a MEGA write up for you soon... It's black, it's a convertible and it's a twin-wurbo. (Any guesses?)

haha! Can't be that bad... Trust, I've seen some pretty bad examples! (not Clio's, I might add!)

mines covered in swirls and various places bird s**t etches :( It could do with a respray tbh...

Very impressive Jim, be interesting to see your skills let loose on Black Gold - which in peoples experience on the forum is really difficult to work on.

Been using Megs 83 on britmax orange pad (Then either lime prim or recently Z-AIO) but only on a DA. Brother has a rotary so might borrow that for the bonnet and roof. Thanks for the reply I'll look into Menz stuff :)

Awesome stuff Jim, proper got me in the mood to sort mine!

Pete, which body shop was it? PM me if you don't want to say on here. As I know you're in/around Brid.

Neither is mine

;)

ah, haha... a fair point well presented!

Very impressive Jim, be interesting to see your skills let loose on Black Gold - which in peoples experience on the forum is really difficult to work on.

Yeah, after seeing others' reports for BG, I'd like to give it a go myself!

Awesome mate! My RB is still in fantastic order:)

Hey Andy, ah good stuff! Keep it up (any recent pics to share?)
