The ethos of this project has always been along the budget DIY lines but with improvements along the way. The first wave was for a bigger engine that ended up with me going for a mappable ignition to ditch the old points and dizzy and I replaced the fuel pump for a modern unit at the same time, this was after a few issues that left me stranded. This came with benefits, raising the original hp from 42bhp to 65bhp. After some fettling if the carb and mapping it was raised to 75bhp.
This only satisfied me for so long, a custom cam was thrown in, vernier pulley and stronger valves springs along with a chunk of material removed from the head to bump compression, this with dialled in for later delivery saw over 100bhp (along with a written off gearbox, my own fault for running it low on oil)
Ive always hankered for that throaty weber sound track so made efforts to get that on and sorted. It runs well but.... it seemed like a backwards step. I have it on there, and bar its funny idle fuelling issue which im assured can be sorted it runs ok and certainly gives the right noises. That said it needs a rebuild and jetting, followed by fine tuning on the dyno with more jetting to suit. This was looking to run me another £500+
After a long conversation whilst trouble shooting with Guy Higgs from Guy Higgs Tuning, he mentioned how if it was EFI, we would be able to fuel correctly at every point in the rpm with no trade offs like you would get with an old school carb. So.... I went hunting for some parts. I've ended up with an ECU master EMU to go on and a weber replacement ITB. I've ordered up a few connectors, loom and some injectors and think I can switch it all over to full EFI with very little issue (he says/touch wood) This will give me full control of the engine along with all the benefits of modern sensors and inputs! the ECU is majorly overkill for my needs but I think it'll be a fun winter project. So far I'm in for about £300 so winning vs the Carb rebuild and setup so far.
So even more modern tech for the ropey old Renault, the ECU even has digital dash support which would be awesome if I can find a budget item. The project has stalled a little whilst I've been going through with this plan but I'm looking forward to the outcome
