Love the car mate. I'm also building a 182 track/race car...on my drive...in Bromley!

I'm changing the clutch, cambelt and fitting ARP rod bolts, so I think it would be best to hook the engine out. It doesn't look to be a bad job looking at yours.

Would love to pop over and have a look at yours some time :D

Thanks buddy, where in Bromley, Im near Bromley North, yea its not a mega job, but iv been messing with cars for 10 years now, so have a basic understanding. The 172 cup is def a good car to work on, very basic. By all means pop over.

Im near the dripping tap so not far at all. I've been trying to do bits on the car today I between the rain! When the weather pics up, I'll drop you a pm and sort something out.

Yea this weather sucks, I need to do some bits on the car too but cant get motivated. Might make some door cards up in the garage, got to be productive as s**t dont do its self.

Update:

Dropped the car off with Mark Fish today to have the following done.

Corner weighting and race geometry set up
Extra driver door bar added (bolt in) to the bolt in cage
Up rated PAS pipe that runs under engine
Stiffer (650lb iirc) and shorter rear springs (The Spax coilover could not go lower enough!).

I have removed the 16mm spacers, however this created a problem. The camber slots in the front coilovers made the inner tyre wall almost come in contact with the coilover adjustment stay, if the car is lowered anymore then this will hit...so I might be adding 5mm spacers back on to stop this from happening. Other solution is to knock a bit of camber off....im leaving this in the hands of Mark.


The car has been booked in for its wrap next week, im going for a baby blue.

Just need top get it remapped now, just waiting for 2 specialists to get back to me ;)

No mate it will be on the coilover, we will be getting longer helper springs. Tp be honest i dont know what the original stiffness was of the spring as Spax never got back to me. Whats are you running?

Ah I see mate :) 650IB is pretty stiff in a 1-1 motion ratio (Coilover rear) but as I say Mark knows his stuff so I have no doubt he's correct! Mine runs softer than that but its an area I have thought about playing around with but its just a matter of trying to find time to do it :)

well im sure he said 650...I will confirm when I pick car up. It was something that he was very concerned about as he wanted to get my car lower, who am I to argue.

Yes I think its just a case of getting used to what you have, hitting your limit with the car then moving forward in terms of modifications. I was happy with my Spax set up at Spa last year, absolutely no understeer, and car felt planted.

October update:

A lot has happened to the car over the past 10 days, as time is running out for the Spa deadline next week. I have not had time to do individual updates due to work and working on the car, so I will back track some of the key updates.

I picked the car up from Mark Fish last week, I had a under carriage inspection, full corner weight and race geometry set up. I decided to keep the Spax RSX coilovers, so decided to make the best of what I had. So on recommendation from Mark and at my level/ability we uprated the rear springs to 300LB items (Originals was 270LB), these are also shorter (10'') enabling the car to be lowered more.

The car weighed in at 890kg with 3/8 tank of fuel. I am happy with that.

Next I had extra B pillar pick up points welded onto the bolt in cage. now making it a 8 point system. Then he added an extra driver door bar, this also is a bolt in item.

Mark then uprated my split PAS pipe (one that runs from pump to steering rack via the gear box). The new uprated one runs under the engine and is flexible.

REMAP update:

Due to the new engine going in, the ECU was mapped for 438 cams, so I needed to get the engine mapped. I dropped the car off down at KTEC for Andy to work on a map for the new engine with the Ktec ITB and GEN90...(this is on std cams). The car produced 197bhp and 172lb torque so again I was happy with that, he did comment about it having good torque curve, maybe its the 182 mani and/or the sports cats.

So thanks to Ktec and Andy for getting me in with little notice :approve:

I ordered a new De-phaser solenoid seal from Adam at Renault, should be arriving tomorrow (Sat) so another job to do before the weekend is up.

Great work. You sure it is the seal and not one of the cam cover bolts loose?

I tightened up all the cover bolts, cleaned and only 60 miles later was greeted with that mess. I inspected the seal and it was rock hard so guessing its the seal.

That does look like its coming up the threads as mark said mate, the seal seems dry? Remove that bolt, cover it in silicone and refit it if your seal gives no joy. Save you taking the woke cover off.

Liking the bonnet, may have to copy it around the ITB filter in mine ;)

I removed the old one with a screw driver, the rubber just perished away leaving the metal core, this popped up fairly easy. I put some workshop tissue in the head to stop crud from falling into the head. Will be fitting the seal tomorrow when it arrives.

Cheers mate, yes it does look a little like RB, the wrap looks a lot darker in the pics, it really is a bright vibrant colour. I think I made the right choice.

When I searched on here, it was said that the bolts can be the cause, on inspection they did seem dry and tight...the seal does look dry but at the back it is wet so guessing its being pushed back at high speed and collecting there. Say that I may put some silicone on the thread as discussed. Do you cover the whole thread or just the top part?

Top part mostly as a seal under bolthead, don't be shy it won't do any harm unless you get loads under the end of the threaded part as there's a slim chance it could hydro lock.

@Morgan, regarding the bonnet holes, im running the KTEC DCH bodies, these stick up more at an angle into the bonnet, so the holes are to aid in the airflow. 90% of the air skips over the top, the 10% makes a difference. The 2 larger holes at the back at to let the air escape without making the bonnet flap, also when stationary you can see the hot air escaping.

Gathered that mate, I would just move them forward a bit to stop rain going on the filter while stationery. Also there won't be a clio bumper in the land soon without holes in it haha, all adds to the 'look'

Did they wrap your roof vent? If so that must have been a task.

I did think about moving them more forward but was away from the angle of the trumpet, suppose it doesn't matter really. I am going to make a bracket so I can slide a plastic sheet in, in the event of heavy rain.

Yes they did wrap it, wrapped it in sections by the looks of it. Im not a wrap fan normally and no nothing about wrapping. what I will say is that it shows up all the imperfections more, I was under the assumption you could hide it. They said the wing mirrors was the hardest.
