the 197 letter in evo..

  PH1_172
rolling roads a pish anyway the results vary from day to day depending on amb temps etc how well the fans are placed on the rollers etc least if both cars on on the track they both face the same conditions, rolling road is for talk, track is for show

  M2 Competition
Aye, all a rolling road is good for is comparing before and after mods have been added, and remaps really. Cant compare different cars on different rollers, or accurately work out whether your cars making book.

Bit like using bathroom scales, i can weigh myself on four different sets of scales, and get four completely different weights.

  PH1_172
yep agree peperami all my boyfriend uses the rollers for is to see if the mods have improved power and torque, even though he does say the day will differ the results he always uses same rollers and tries to go same time of the day normally

Guys give the 197 thing a rest now . Just like the Megane sucked when it came out , there will be some Team R27 bla bla bla thing coming out that will blow your socks off .I have had a go in the 197 , the better made / better looking interior , nicer made interior and little increase in grip and bhp levels make it worth it .

At least it doesn't look like the car didn't drive through your local "car acccesories" shop like the vxr vauxhalls , and be glad for that.

197 is at the fly and 182/172 is at the fly too.
this is my 197 at the wheels before and after remap...

197graph1.jpg

hahahahahahahahahaha.ha. ...hah....ha If that's at the wheels you've gained 20+bhp from a filter and a remap??!!

At the wheels. My f**king arse sunshine!!:clown: :clown:

What a pointless thread... and this is my pointless contribution, which is still more valuable than some of the comments in here.

You want a nice under estimated german car, those nice chaps at VW actually set the figures based upon crappy fuel and the likes and chop a bit off the toque figures for regualtions, so when it goes to the RR runningt 100 octane German optimax it makes more than you expected ;)

Good old RR figures....oh so reliable

Indeed.

But it does have a ring of truth about it as the 197 does appear to be under powered - see article in same issue of EVO where it could not keep up with Cooper S, Corsa VXR, or Seat thingy-bob despite having highest 'claimed' bhp :(

My car was dyno'd recently - measured 148 at the wheels, which equates to roughly 175 at the fly.

Using those transmission losses, your alleged 192 at the wheels would give you 227 at the fly. So that's an extra 30 bhp. From a remap. On a Renault normally aspirated engine. ROFLMFAO.

Where can I buy some of this magic fairy engine dust?

You get it free mate, when you purchase a air filter and zorst for your 172/182. Dont tell anyone but it comes in a little bottle, u sprinkle it on and instead of getting 5-6 hp, you get 25-35 and 0-60 times sub 6 seconds, For accurate timing you must puchase the magic fairy dust egg timer though, available for 2,99 from all good hardware stores

Oh dear...Good old RR figures. They really do make me chuckle....

Lets see what results Evo get when they test their 197; no one is denying its a great car but eyesbrows have to be raised with Renault state 194bhp (197ps), and the car only returns 170bhp ish...

It's simply not acceptable if this is the case...

Tys.

lol, was thinking the same! I made near as damn it 204bhp @ wheels which IMO is optimistic and it more likely around the mid 220's, but I know for a fact that it would blow away ANY 197 (bar or course a Cup racer lol). Still, quality reading, made me laugh :D

Its not just feel that told me twice after testing the 197 that my 182 felt like rocket, then again I suppose Evo writing that the 197 not keeping up with the mini, corsa etc was made up because Renault pay Evo to say nice things...........hang on somethings not right there. LOL.

Just noticed Weeman rr graph LOL!

  Better than yours. C*nt.
I don't like the 197. If anyone cares to point out that I don't actually deserve an opinion then fair enough, but until that day my opinion is what I stand by and that's that the engine didn't need a 6th gear with closer ratios, if anything it needed an overdrive cog. It's too big and too ungainly with only a negligible increase in interior space if any.

How much does it cost to have a run on your rollers Weeman?

I reckon I could get 900bhp with a filter

RE: OE Post

Colin mu old friend. For a supposed car enthusiast you are out of touch. Maybe its all that cleaning?

All cars do not give the manufacturers claimed power figures.

All engines are bench tested without gearbox etc so 197 for example refers to power at the flywheel.

182 I suspect will be at the wheels which is fantastic. Even 170 at the wheels is good.

BTW a 172/182 has transmission losses as wheel hence RR figures for standard cars will show approx 13-/140 at the wheels, not 172/182 as so many of you clearly think.....(roll eyes)

Do some research into engine power figures and transmission losses....for starters.

tim, most rolling roads ive seen have quoted power at the flywheel! so thats probably the case there too! :)

A rolling road quotes power at the wheels hence why your wheels are running on great big rollers which measure the power....er.....at the wheels. They then give an estimate of power at the fly based on standard transmission losses.

Like I said anyone who thinks they are getting full power eg 172/182/197/230/255 at the wheels needs to go to engine school....

Cars don't make anywhere near the manufacturers claimed figures on the road.

But I think this has been cleared up a few pages back.

At the end of the day I think we all know in our hearts that the 197 does not produce 197ps at the fly. If it did, it should be able to crack 100 in sub 17s, especially with its low gearing. With higher gearing it should be able to crack 145mph. It can do either of those things. So, it either weighs 1350kg+ or it only has around 185ps. (IMO) Yes, the handling and drive are more important than the figures, but I know that I left my test drive feeling gutted because it felt slow, and I know I'm not alone.

It's a great car, and it will get greater over time, but it needs a turbo. The vast majority of buyers in this sector DO want some power, and the likes of of the Corsa VXR etc. are taking the lead. Renault (IMO) either need to sprinkle some Honda genius into their engine, or they need to strap a blower on it. With 230bhp+ the Clio would clean up. Make it so.

agree but the meganesport is unusual for a renault as it puts out more power as standard on the right fuel

I do now like the 197 in blue only tho and it needs lowering, i really want a test drive in one but cant stand show room people wanna go out on my own in it.
