April 2017 - Update #1

Trophy #165 got a bit of attention today as Dan (SJM Automotive) took her for a ride and subsequent exhaust fitting  Below are a few of the pics he kindly sent through to me. Am I allowed to get excited about a new exhaust? Well - I am. There are a few more bits and pieces to sort and tidy and then the system is ready for TIG welding.

April 2017 - Update #2

As hinted at in my last update, here are a few more photos from the custom exhaust setup that is part of the overall build for Trophy #165. It's coming together nicely and to say I'm happy with the results is an understatement (apologies if photos of an exhaust system is not really your thing...) It's a slightly :tonguewink: bigger bore than standard and this should allow for a nice, free-flowing system.

Many thanks to Dan at SJM for the ongoing work and to TSR for the assistance and facilities.

Whilst the various work is going on with the car we thought we might as well go "scene" and aim for a little more "lowz"... :fearscream:

Hmm, perhaps the "stealth-look" doesn't work quite so well on the 182 Trophy... :tonguewink:

Fills the holes in quite nicely I reckon.

I can't wait for it to be finished and fitted.

Perhaps I've gone a bit OTT on pics of the exhaust but I have a lot of updates and photos to catch-up on  Thanks for looking and I aim to have a few more updates very soon... cheers!

Wow, what an epic build thread! I've read this from start to finish (well all of your updates) and to be fair, you've been truly inspirational. A lot of people have thrown in the towel a long time ago and myself included. There's nothing worse than the feeling of spending money good after bad. Most of us have been there at one time or another. There's a lot to be said for leaving cars standard as that's how they've been designed and developed however that just not in our nature as enthusiasts. It was a brave decision to change to a totally different engine in a car that many wouldn't but i guess once the engine lunched itself the first time the trophy wasnt original any more! Can't wait to see the fruits of your labour! Nice to see Steveboyslim is still about, I had to lol when i read he was still building his RS200. That's been going on for about 12 years now!

Hahaha, thanks for taking the time to read through mate. I can't help but feel that I've been more idiotic than inspirational... but hindsight is a wonderful thing! :) Hopefully it won't be too much longer now until Trophy #165 is ready to come out to play. Steve's done a great job on the engine and it should be quite a tasty little build once everything is pulled together and finished. Cheers!

Can the DP be mounted without dropping the subframe? Looks very nice
Cheers mate. There are various bits and pieces going on down and around there so I've left it in the capable hands of the guys who know better than I do :) It can certainly get a bit tight and cosy down there!

Can't believe you've gone for the 3" motorsport slash cut tail pipes, I was quite happy having the only Trophy out there with them......

Good to see some progress mate, had mine out the other day it's an absolute beast still, your gonna love it when it's done.

Sorry mate! Please see it as a form of flattery... ;) :p
It's good to hear you got the beast out recently and you're enjoying it. I'm really looking forward to getting #165 back. I've never experienced a decent level of boost in a car so light as the Trophy. I expect it will keep me entertained :innocent:

That exhaust! Lovely!
Aye - it's a shame it's going to be out of sight! Hmm, maybe the exhaust pipes should extend outwards and down along the sills, like an AC Cobra... burn the lower legs each time I get out of the car! :p

April 2017 - Update #3

Another update and - yes - a few more exhaust pics. I'm happy to say that the exhaust is now all TIG'd up and finished! I'm absolutely chuffed with the work on this and how it's turned out. It's a 3" system all the way through and ends with the slash-cut style tail pipes.

A massive thanks to Dan at SJM for his time and handiwork - top, top job!

I'll be happy to get some miles out of it and I'll certainly be enjoying those miles with a grin across my face  Fingers crossed mate...

Woohoo! That's all I wanted to hear - Pattison Approved™ - job done

July 2017 - Update #1

And so... we role into July and #165 has seen no progress whatsoever in the last 3 months. I'm really not sure what to do at the moment and feeling somewhat deflated. Due to external factors/commitments the two-man team working on it has become one-man and I've pushed for it to be finished so that I can use it for the Weekender (182 Trophy event in Wales). However, time is incredibly tight and it's touch and go as to whether or not it will be ready. To be honest, I'm not holding my breath given past experiences. On the plus side I have had offer of help from a top bloke who is well-known in RenaultSport circles; who has offered to completely finish the car off for me if it gets to that point. The only downside is that it won't be ready for the Weekender due to other commitments he has.

On a separate note I took the Type-R out today for a drive and absolutely kicked its head in on some of my favourite Welsh roads. The roads were quiet, the music loud, and the weather as spectacular as the views. As I was on my own I was able to give it a few beans extra and it didn't disappoint. Stopping off at my favourite Cafe for some food it was ticking its head off as it cooled down  It didn't miss a beat all day and is driving better and stronger now it's rolled over 110,000 miles, not using a drop of oil. Loved it. Yet all I could think was how amazing it would have been to be in #165... so, so frustrating despite having one of the best drives I've had alone in many years.

I hope so D - I've lost an awful lot of enthusiasm for it. I'm sure the fires will soon be rekindled once I'm back in it but it's starting to take the pi$$ a bit now! I know folks are busy and 'life happens' but 2.5 years is... well... :( I think I'm perfectly entitled to feel more than a little annoyed and frustrated.

I will certainly be grabbing a few audio and video captures; there are a couple of magazines interested in a feature or two and a few vlogs / YouTubers who want to do a feature or three as well :)

Wow, feel for you, I remember seeing this at BTM when I had my black 182 5 years ago I think? Whats holding it up? Been some mega builds happen in a quarter of the time of this one!

What's outstanding Andy?
My question too.

Is it something a few of us could smash the f**k out of over 2/3 days or is it a huge amount of specialist fab work?
There are a few bits and pieces outstanding chaps. The engine is all built and ready to go in - as is the gearbox - but it's the work around it that also needs to be done. Off the top of my head: engine to go in along with full hardpipe kit, turbo, downpipe, intercooler, fitment of new exhaust, installation of revised fuel system and swirl pot (and pump, regulators, etc), fitting of new gearbox, installation of new uprated clutch, new / custom loom with firewall block adapter for easy (dis)connection if the engine has to go in/out, installation of digital dash and programming for custom sensor setup (I have extra sensors in the engine for monitoring cylinder temps and similar), installation and setup of trick ECU, setup for boost by gear, flatfoot shifting, setup installation of new big brake kit, EPAS conversion, installation of new Mark Fish Trophy springs, refurb of Sachs dampers, powdercoating of hard pipes, new tyres, safe mapping for running in, running in, final maps, etc. There are all other little things like new pads and discs, suspension refresh, new steering wheel... to be honest, I can't even remember myself at the moment.

Is the car somewhere now, or at home etc?
It's still at the workshop mate - not seen the old girl in quite some time!

:( Yep - it spent over 1.5 years at BTM and, unfortunately, the engine and gearbox failed. Hence I only got minimal usage from that build and I ended up back at square one. This build rose from the ashes of that build, albeit with a slightly different direction. I've had the car for only a handful of months over the last 5 years and probably only put 1500 miles on it if that.

Every time I see an update it annoys me and it's not even my car lol. Understanding isn't the word.
Yeah - that's the frustrating thing mate. It promises to be a quite tidy little build with a lot of the work having been done now. It just needs the final push to put everything back together and to get it over the finishing line. I'm just not in a position to make that happen and have to continue to rely on folks who, undoubtedly as capable as they are, can't find the time to give it that final push.

Dare I say hope you sort it soon?!?.

You come accross on here as a really nice guy, maybe that's the issue lol
Too late, you've said it! :tongueout:
Thanks for the kind words mate. Maybe that's the problem. Maybe I need to be a bit of a tw*t and start shouting more!

Not viable to get engine dynamics to finish it off for you?
No mate - people aren't keen to take it on given the fact that they weren't involved in the work that's already taken place. On a build of this level they prefer to be involved from the start it would seem (which makes sense). Reputable RenaultSport specialists, whilst still out there, are getting thin on the ground. At least those I trust! Hence they tend to have busy schedules as well... catch-22! For the record I've got complete faith in Mike (certainly no issues there) but there are only so many hours in the day (and I'm running out of patience after such a drawn out period of time).

I feel sorry for you mate, what an absolute joke.
No disrespect to any parties involved as I know they're nice people, but this is why I never trust mates rates lol. Life can get in the way sometimes, but one just needs to be upfront about it.

Hope you get it back soon Andy

I just don't get it, that's still quite some to do list for something that's been ongoing for 18months. I'd be f**king raging.
30 months buddy... :(

Bit late for that now!

That exhaust is epic btw
Yeah - the exhaust looks the nuts. If it sounds half as good as it looks...

You must be far to nice!
Too nice or a mug? :p

I feel sorry for you mate, what an absolute joke.
I just hope that I am able to gel with the car when it does come home. I expect I will... otherwise it wold have been an expensive mistake in both wasted time and money.

Cheers mate.
Yeah, they are top blokes and it won't break any friendships that have been made; there's no issue whatsoever as far as that's concerned. However, I'm allowed to be pissed off! I knew it would take a while and I have deliberately not pushed due to the fact they have jobs, life and family like everyone else. But I just did not expect this lengthy and drawn-out affair.
