Think I wrote off my 182 :(

Well about 5 weeks after getting my 182, its gone :(

Hit a big puddle at about 70mph late last night and spun into centre reservation and broke bumper, lights etc ans wheel was hanging off so didnt look too good. It was on a90 near stonehaven and there was a golf r32 behind that did exactly the same.

Anyone on here used Glass's valuation as im wondering what direct line might offer me to write off...

It was a 54 plate 182 with cup pack, 51k miles and in good all round condition.

Anyone able to make an informed guess as I suspect ill be looking for a new one next week.

I wasnt actually driving like a knob, i had just pulled out to pass a lorry so sped up a little then the outside lane was about a foot deep in water but it was too dark to see until i was in and and car just pulled off to the side and into a spin.

The annoying thing is i had driven all the way from edinburgh and the next turn off was newtonhill so i was about a minute from getting back :(

Didnt manage to get any pics as i was stranded in between the 2 lanes and was just wanting to get off road. Police and fire brigade came and were very helpful though.

I think it was taken to a place at altens so may try get some pics tomorrow if its still there.

Ah, gutted!

At least you're ok, and it's the car that came off worse. We all have scares like that, where things can catch you out, unfortunately you didn't get away with it.

standing water is a nightmare, I aquaplaned today as I was trying to turn in managed to recover very quickly though, could have been up a verge quite easily.

Ah ok, i was winding you up ;)

Are you ok ?

Yeah the road was pretty s**t last night, i've been driving slow as fook as you can't see f**k all for spray and s**t myself a few times hitting big puddles and aqua planing a wee bit :(

It may have been Cars Recovery that picked it up as they are contracted by Grampian Police for a lot of car uplifts.
If so there place is up the road on the left from Specialist Cars Audi (across from Skoda Garage) ;)

I'll see you up there for free 182 parts
Lol :rasp:

Yeah I wasnt hurt which is good, really was wondering where I was going to stop when i was sliding sideways on the chuckies but thankfully missed the signpost.

Pretty gutted about the car but if youre going to steal some parts off it D1CKY can u get my housekeys back as well as i left them on the keyring lol

Yes, this is exactly what you do. :S

Honest to god! Why would you do that!

Pm'd mate, hopefully I can help.

^Why not do that? (genuine Q btw)

When my old car was wrote off and I was offered less than others, I printed off similar cars off autotrader showing a higher price and they upped the offer. Is there a better way of doing it?

  172 Cup, Ibiza Cupra
Mainly because 99% of cars on AutoTrader etc are for sale at the price the OWNER think their car is worth. Most people usually value their car much higher than it's worth. Also just becuase a car is advertised at £XXXX doesn't mean it will sell at that price.

Well I will try to explain. Pistonheads and auto trader are for people trying to sell their cars to other people so prices are slightly lower than going into a garage and buying one.

Assessors know that policyholders will look at these places for values on there write off and they will use the cars on these websites as a guide then take off any damage to your vehicle like dents ect...

They should be using the guide price (glass' guide) of you going into a garage and buying a 182 say 1-2k more than you would in a private sale.
But people don't know this and the assessor goes away happily he just saved 2-3k on a settlement.

Assessors must use glass' guide to value your car against the repair cost but he could offer you £1 for the car and he's not doing anything wrong.

So to say print off auto trader cars ect... is a ridiculous statement unless you want to cost yourself a good couple of grand imo.

PS./ I don't explain things well.

makes sense use dealer prices if you're going down this route but obviously knowing what glass' value is a better starting point.

Yeah it's the access to glass' guide which obv gives me the advantage over the general joe public they can only take the assessors word for it I suppose.

It's something we need to pay for and no not a public thing really.

  182
So if my car was wrote off and the insurance offered me x amount, what proof can I use to contest it if I can't access glass guide? Surely autotrader and the likes is the only option?

Nah, you can request a copy of the glass' guide valuation or I think you can phone somewhere and pay for it maybe.

  F4R'd ITB'd '92 cup racer
yeh you can pay for a private valuation through glass's guide

we only use glass's, it stands up in a court of law, advert clippings don't! ;)

Oh okay then, so the examples of similiar spec 182s from dealers are advertised slightly lower on autotrader than what they are worth then are they????, so the dealers that are selling the 182s dont use/have access to the glass guide, but you do?.

I agree with all this apart from a couple of circumstances-
The OP is ok because the car is factory standard & the glasses guide is fairly is easy to follow once its mileage adjusted-

Occasionally the guide is difficult to use on the Private ID paint cars for example,( like say a moonlight blue 182)then actually you can use dealer sales listed on p.heads because they usually show a huge + premium over standard- as the dealers recognise them-

Guide price is IIRC the retail value as well not the PX/trade price-
although im sure Gally will correct me on that if im wrong--

The OP is also fortunate in terms of difference between trade & guide price as some cars for example command a smaller 'margin' that another- ( high demand cars have a high margin- where as high volume low demand cars have a lower margin)

A renault sport Clio 182 is pretty good on the margin stakes so this should help you when it comes to valuation time.....

Look at 182s from traders on Autotrader, Id take a guess that their valuations are based on the glass guide, not 1,2,3 k under priced like you seem to think.:S

No you're perfectly right mate, there is an factory options list of i.d paint ect... in the guide but you are right you would have to explain that your car is rare and therefore is not just a clio 182 it might be a liquid yellow one for eg....
I'm only trying to make sure people don't agree with the price of a 182 off pistonheads for 5k. But yeah if you're clued up enough you should try and explain that your car is worth more.

I factored in both cup packs into my valuation but sometimes these mean very little.

No I was talking about private sales not garages on auto trader offering 182's for 8k! That's just ridiculous. It was more to do with 182's on for private sale at 5k.
Glass' guide can help both the engineer and policy holder.
