Toastfrenzy's Tin Top, some say...........

Kind of, you might slightly disturb the centre position of the steering wheel, but the actual geo in terms of toe values etc will still be the same as you arent changing the distance between the two rod ends. If the wheel ends up off centre you can adjust that yourself so long as you add from one exactly what you take from the other (ie turn both 2 flats or whatever) and it will still be sound.

Cheers Chip ...have to see what pans out when I get my head in there.

Mates 300 mtrs down the road, in old farm building. Got 3 lifts and loads of gear. I have been using it off and on since we've lived here but more of late. Got a set of keys now!! Take my own tools to keep it easy and just use his heavy kit. He does LR's and fair bit of other stuff.

Managed all this on my own - though I did forget to take the fuel line off the injector rail, just as well Scarlett was lifting and I was moving and pushing so saw it it in time...

Just did it so I could repeat what Dan had shown me - will put it back in a few days. Sorting the EPAS out, got all the rack blanked off so that was painless with the engine out.

Rockingham06-04-2013, Race write up

We set off early as had a bit left to do on the Cup once at Rockingham, drove down to Dan's at 519 Automotive the day before to pick the car up after an engine swap and re map so time was tight on the morning of the race. Having a rear puncture on the Passat when joining the A1 didn't help, 1 boot unload, wheel change and boot re arrange on the side of the A1 later we arrive at Rockingham.

Get sorted with parking,

Meet up with Tony and Ian and unloaded the Cup from trailer to start theprep work. Introduced to some people from the Track Attack crew, seemed interested in our cars....got given the series windscreen sticker,

WP_000139_zps48e4dc39.jpg

which the maker\designer obliviously was never told that the Clio windscreen is somewhat smaller than the Jap cars already running in the series.

Being in the outer paddock the scrut's came to us, passed comment on needing tape over the battery terminals, tape applied car passed checks. All signed on and car ready Sam and I talk qualifying tactics and who's going first, lines and HOW MANY LAPS the first person should do. Leaving the majority of the Q session for the 2[SUP]nd[/SUP]driver to get on it after the car has been warmed up. Sam opted to go first and was to come after 3 laps

Qualifying session under way, I make my way down to the pit lane after seeing Sam go by 3 times, saw her shoot past the pits again – and again and finally she came in. Did a quick 45-50 second driver change and off I went. First time past the pits the chequered flag was out Q session over, 1 lap done – not enough to qualify to race. Get told Sam has to do race 1 and I have to the 2[SUP]nd [/SUP]race but rather than start where Sam finishes I have to start from the back of the pack – last.

Time goes quickly and Sam's down in the collecting area waiting to drive out to the starting grid for race 1 – last minute adjustments, camera and data logger on. Having qualified 17[SUP]th [/SUP]out of 36 cars puts her mid pack, over shoots her start line after the green flag lap, reverses back, not far enough so creeps forward to the line she can see – didn't get a penalty for being out of position for the start – but may of done had she finished further up the order.

She Gets a good start and holds her own, bit of in car footage from the car behind her showing the start and first couple of corners.

Sam quickly settles down and makes 3 places up in the fist 2 laps, then it's a 3way battle for 14[SUP]th[/SUP],15[SUP]th [/SUP]and 16[SUP]th [/SUP]with a Mr2 and a 350z, turns out the 350z had 2[SUP]nd [/SUP]3[SUP]rd [/SUP]selection issues). Sam remained in front defending from the Mr2 and 350z whilst they swapped position each lap.

On 1st lap after 2nd corner Dean.

Was a good result and race for Sam – finished 14th overall and 3rd in class. She's very happy indeed.

The camera failed 2 mins into the race so no footage was recorded at all b it of an ars3.

Soon it 's my turn to race, starts off badly when driving trough the gate to get in the collecting area the Marshal\bouncer says, “not on my list can't come in” FFS. Park up over to one side and Tony walks up (he has a pit driver to do the more mundane duties!!) explain to him and he goes and finds the series co-ordinator. Eventually I get let in.

Bit of confusion when being shown my last place grid slot?? The track active siren goes off – 30 sec board then the green flag –hang back a bit and try a race start mess it up so set off – whilst looking for a route past the slower rear markers for the race.

Formation lap completed and when lining up onto my grid slot I fail to notice that the electrical problem, limp mode light has come on....

ScreenHunter_02Apr140855_zps91dd7007.jpg

5 sec board appears, start to rev...nothing 3-4 k only. Look down, twice and see the limp mode light, switch off and re-start the engine, meanwhile the red lights have come on, gone off and the race has started. Now really in last position I set off in a hurry to catch up, grabbing gears as I go – for what ever reason I position my hand to the right side of the gear stick (not the correct side for 4[SUP]th[/SUP])and when going for 4[SUP]th [/SUP]I select 2[SUP]nd [/SUP]and massively over rev the engine and that’s the end of my race. I coast to the slip road exit from dean and watch the rest of the race from there. Gutted to say the least.

The camera decided to work for my race so everything can be seen as it happened.

Was a good day, apart from fubar'ing the engine, and we'll hopefully be back out June 27[SUP]th [/SUP]for the TARC Brands Indy meeting. If the car's ready in time, planning to get rid of the 10 year old French wiring and also have to sort the engine out.

For those in the know, this is what you missed this time out................

Sorry if I missed it somewhere Pete but what ECU are you going for? Have you changed the engine spec now you've decided on standalone ECU? Hope all is going well!

Canems - along with one of their engine looms.

Oh yes, it's changed, hopefully already sold my 438's...

You'll have to wait and see James. It'll be good though

I'll keep quiet!!

Wont be canems then I guess, lol

Not all of us are £500 p\d contractors! Canems came in a lot more affordable too.

Finally found time to finish off reading through your thread. :) I enjoyed the read / updates - thanks! Good luck with the new engine and your future events.

Hello Pete,

Just like to say a big thanks for getting the PAS pipe delivered so quickly and at a great price mate,I owe you one as it's even got the switch with it, that'll save a couple of quid as my current item leaks at this point as well.
Good luck with the engine build I'm sure Dan will do a top job, I'm just wondering what spec of cams you'll go for;) looking foreward to your 1st event on the new engine.

Regards Russ........

You're welcome Russ, The PAS sensor did leak a while ago on mine, gave it a good clean (leaked from the centre of plug) and it didn't show any signs of leaking since, hopefully will stay the same for you too.

It was such a nice day taking the Cup back up to the barn, just had to take a pic. The view from the drive looking west.
