Took the engine out and apart today!

  C63 AMG, F430 & 172
All went smooth. Will upload pics later.

The bores look ok, few hairline vertical marks about 12mm long and not even on the scale how deep prop 0.000000002 mm deep about 2/3 per bore, is this normal? will the honing for the new pistons rid this?

Also the tops of the pistons were caked in black carbon deposits like 1-2mm thick and would crumble if you touched them, almost flakey..again normal? If not what is causing it?

pics tomorow

was it mapped properly sounds overly rich thats not normal?
scored bores can also be caused by over fuelling.

  ITB'd MK1
very faint vertical marks are totally normal and unavoidable. a hone will get rid of it, but you'll probably see some light marks again when you put new pistons in.

Are you sure the carbon is as thick as that? some is normal

edit - we know it's not over fueling as we checked it

yea, at first i thought the pistons had worn/melted/corroded away lol.. but i scrapped it with a flat head and all the carbon started breaking off, strange! its only done 16 k lol

  ITB'd MK1
you'll never see an engine that has no carbon on the piston crown unless it's been running lean or hot (in which case it burns the carbon off)

That car WAS overfuling! lol Was it rebuilt top end after getting bodies...??

  C63 AMG, F430 & 172
not after the boddies, I think the head was rebuilt when the piston cracked.

Its having a full head re build too

  Black Gold Trophy
Pistons are nearly always black on the face when you take them out its usually a light oil/carbon deposit.

:(

Also I changed the oil 280 miles ago, when I dropped it out yesterday it was black as fook again...does oil change colour that quickley?

  Black Gold Trophy
when I had my engine rebuilt in my corsa, the guy that did it put it in a chemical washer unit, got rid of all the black really well. But it will always return as the rings never make a perfectly tight seal with the bores, so you will get a tiny amount of combustion charge run down the bores every once in a while that makes the oil black.
