probably a good idea, mine is 100% standard with 50k but its needing an exhaust as its already on its 3rd standard one and after getting a quote a few weeks ago I'm really torn what to do with it!!! - my mrs will literally kill me and burry me and my Trophy, shes still a bit raw after I announced the R27 lol

Looks like the whole classic car market is starting to feel a bit of a "correction", some high value stuff hasn't been making reserve in the last few weeks. The whole "car as an investment" thing may be about to start to look rather dubious after a good few years of insane growth.

  Clio 182
I sold Trophy151 with 38k on the clock last year and it started a price rise. I don't regret it (much) as at this end of the spectrum the costs involved to make a potential return of perhaps 5k are just not worth it.

It was a great car but my lightly sensibly modified 182 is almost the same car but I can put loads of miles on and not worry.

I don't see them being more than 10k ever unless it was almost new.

Hope people continue to enjoy and drive them rather than wrap them up.

Seems crazy to own a trophy and not enjoy it for what it is rather that store it away with minimal use for 10 years to 'mayby' make a measly £5-6k in that time.Yeah that type of moneys alot but not compared to 10 years use and having fun with the car.Lifes too short !

lol...just read the article...your going to struggle to get a concourse on for £7k already.

The problem is that they are already quite valuable compared to a regular 1*2, so I think the scope for making money is reduced.

If you take the example of the old RS2000 (MK1 and 2), they were trading hands for hundreds around 20 years ago, but are now worth £10-20k, even more potentially, so the percentage increase is much, much greater.

You can never tell though. I doubt my Cup will ever be worth much with 130k on it and some "track day dents" lol. I can see Cups and Ph.1 172s probably going up a bit eventually though.

I just don't see it I'm afraid. They simply were not different enough from the standard car.

I reckon a few standard ones will be worth a few quid but not crazy values.

  182 Trophy
Why have one of the best performing hot hatches of all time and not use it? Total waste in my opinion! Mine is well looked after - I've just spent £800 this week getting the dampers rebuilt and refreshing the whole front suspension...but it is driven as intended by Renault.
It's going to cost at least another £1000 to cover basic maintenance over the next 5 years (damper rebuild and belts as well as routine servicing) so to properly maintain a Trophy will still cost a fair bit.

The way I see it is that I'm driving one of the best hot hatches ever and it won't depreciate over the next few years!
Win Win!

It's nice to know that the car you

Didnt you sell one because you didnt want to put miles on it...?

Maybe, if the 182 is a girly colour.

Its this one mate, its currently in with Andyrg at clioturbo.co.uk having the engine stripped to see if theres any damage as I suffered an oil leak when the cam seal popped out, and the box is being sent off to agency transitions for a refurb as I had a crunch going from 2nd to 3rd at high rpm shifting fast, this is costing me £1400+ to repair so its perfect for me to keep or to sadly sell on to a new home...

  182 Trophy
I bought my Trophy back in the summer, at what might be considered to be the lower end of the current market due to mileage mainly (a mere 115k, so nothing in 172/182 terms really). Great service history and have spent a few quid on it over the last couple of months doing lots of servicing/overhaul work and getting it 'just right'. Drives superbly and brings a smile to my face every time....these cars are there to be driven!
Can't see them producing a significant return on investment to be honest, unless super low miles and perfect condition. There are undoubtedly other cars out there that can return better yields.

V6 255 will be the classic. The most extreme version of a clio that you could get.

The trophy is still just a 182, but with trick suspension. Suspension which makes it very good, but needs refurbishing on a regular basis at great cost.

Great cars, but they aren't going to make you a fortune.

If you want an investment buy solid early mk1 mx5s,
I think trophys have peaked and will stay around the same level now.

I do like the disclaimer on the vee.

The article says 'could' not 'will'. I hope no direct action is being taken as a result of this article. Those who enjoy driving will continue to do so, and those who choose to invest today for a future return will be happy with their choice.

I wonder if the FTSE will outperform Trophy appreciation in 10 years.

I have to admit I completely agree.

Don't get me wrong the one I owned handled great but it just wasn't a drastic enough difference from my 172.

I ended up selling mine after 6 months because the solid ride quality was doing my head in.

They look amazing when they're clean though..

I think it very much depends on the classic car trend as a whole. I think many of the naysayers here are probably saying exactly the same thing as people would have said about the 5GTT, 205 GTI, Escort RS Turbo etc, and values of those have rocketed.

I think ten years is a bit optimistic, but I think it's perfectly plausible to think that they will always have some value. The stumbling block for me is the fact their prices are high already. It might be that the % increase in value ends up being higher for the "lesser" versions, like ph.1 and Cup.
