What are 172/182's like.

Hi guys, ive been told to sell lusty clio and buy a 172/182 by a few people.
Just wanted to find out what their like to live with every day, as i would use it everyday for work so would need something as reliable as my current extreme.

Is the performance as staggaring as i can imagine. Ive been told by some people who own them that if you drive them properly using all performance then it will make you tingle with adreniline and excitement. Is this true?

Finally one thing is that if i got one it would be second hand and im a bit worried about potentially getting one thats been thrashed and pushed hard. Is that the norm amongst you 172/182 owners, and if so have you encountered any problems as a result??

Many Thanks
Ed

Not sure about tingle there are quick but depends on you I've never been impressed I get bored quick I don't think mnay cars would make me think yep thats enough power.

I wouldn't worry about owners on hre there are loads who take great care the cars are very relaible realy plus there laods of 172/182 out there owned by people who never drive them gharder although there often the slow ones and often more trouble a car hammered all the time if often less trouble. You have to be aware though they arn't cheap as say a 1.2 to keep running even if you DIY the serviign on both.

Best try for a test drive though each to there own.

They are good fun on a back road but argubale the power isn't massive (Although I've yet to find a truely quick powerful car)

i got mine off a 50 year old lady who had owned it form new.
everything in perfect shape.

In terms of power, it depends how you drive to whether it will be enough. If you take the view that the road is the road, and there are limits to be stuck to, then it has enough.

If you like going out at night and throwing it around then you may think it needs more.

Personally i want more power - but what it lacks in power it gains in its handling and fun factor - therefore keepign me more than happy.

you can embarass most boy racers in their "other" cars so as far as im concerned its ok.

Its also a good compromise of power and MPG ability.

Will put hairs on your chest !!

Ive come from a saxo vtr into one, for the first month it was like s**t off a shovel, but then like anythign you get used to the power and start listning for the rattles....

tocuh wood nothing has gone wrong with my 03 plate 172 and i do alot of motorway work. i'm averaging 34mpg thats booting it and normal driving too

Dont get rid of your pride and joy just becuase of what a few people who dont like modified cars have said. You've put thousands and thousands and many hours into making you car how you want it, so that looks individual, why sell it to get a standard car, which is obviously something that doesnt make you happy. Yes they're fast, and they put a smile on your phase but in everyday circumstances you only get to 30 most of the time anyway, so dont experience this. Also you get used to the speed within a matter of weeks, so dont buy one for this alone. You wont get the money back that you've spent on your modified car, the market at the mo is also terrible.

If you still wnat one, a sign of how thraped the cars been is by looking at the gearbox, if its slack its likely to be thraped. If mine didnt come with a waranty I would definatly advice an aa/rac insepction to ensure the cars ok.

wouldnt go selling your pride and joy just because what other people think.. u cant please everyone.. yeah the clio is fast, but you soon get used to it and bored of it.. i had a micra during my 182 ownership for a month, and it was dead slow, then getting back into the clio and it felt RAPID! but the other day i thought it felt slow..

they are nice cars, but like everyone said, as soon as you own one, you will be then aiming for which car you want next.. (a hyabusa westfield in my case) ;)

if anything mate do what i did just drop a 172 engine into yours k-tec do a conversion for 3k all in and it'll be quicker then some of the 172 & 182 range, i'd done all my bodywork and stuff then went in a 172 and was like "i want the power!" but cudnt bare to get rid of my car after all my work so i just dropped the engine in and now its a beast pure and simple, cost me an extra £200 on insurance and nothing more in tax and i use the same amount in petrol

i'd agree with this, in your case it would def work out cheaper to do and engine conversion, normally it wouldnt, but in this instance it would.

if your defo loving your car but want more power its the way to go or you will lose big bucks, the one big thing that really put me off selling was i'd get rid of mine get a normal 172 and have to start again - but probably seing it pass me by one day and thinking "i wish id kept i now" hence why i'm still keeping mine and trying to get a 240bhp package from yozza - once i get a price *cough cough*

Thats big money hope you've got deep pocked for all the other bis you will idealy want ie gearbox strenghting clutch mounts etc.

Get a sequechail gearbox instead and some light engine tunning it will be quicker.

Few people saying they got bored of the power etc. You would do if you drive like a nutter everywhere, always going into the power band. I tend not to drive everywhere like I stole it and I'm not bored yet. It also depends what the roads are like that you drive on too. Personally I went from a Scenic to a cupped 182 after my divorce, every cloud and all that ;) , so I'm generally pleased. Agree with the comments about not selling yours just on advice from other people tho. See if you can blag a little test drive and see what you think m8.

i dont even notice the power of my 182 no more, although wen i was gettina sensor done i had a shot of a 307 and it was so slow and as justin said 1st back in the 182 yeh felt really quick but now just normal!

Power is nothing crazy but nice and linear.

Easy to live with...reasonable on fuel and cheap on insurance:)

Thanks guys, thats given me something to think about.

When k-tec do these engine conversions where do they get the engines from?? Also will they remove the head and inspect the internals as standard to ensure all of the mechanical bits inside are ok (technical language there lol)??

Cheers

You'd be daft to make your car a 172 by dropping a engine in etc

Its not like 172's are expensive to buy plus you'd have the extra insurance, hassle, time off the road etc etc

By the time youve sold your car and added the money together what it would cost you for doing the conversion you could pick up a decent 172 / 182

  Turbos.
But then he likes his current Clio...

The engine conversion may make sense in this case, but at the same time it's not like he will own his Clio forever, you don't want to end up being 30 with a bodykitted Clio!
