Why is 172/182 insurance so high?

I currently pay £800 for my westfield.

I want another hot hatch but this time i'm not going on fleet insurance as i fancy some NCB for once lol

Quotes so far. 19 and no NCB

Clio 172 - £2430 fully comp
Ibiza Cupra chipped to 200bhp - £1551 fully comp

Errr surely somethings amiss here lol

Just seems odd. An ibiza with a KO3s turbo, bigger injectors, FMIC, exhaust (around 250bhp) and H&r coilovers came to £1680 fully comp. I know which i'll be having.

  Sold the sport :(
How can they be so nickable when they have a factory fit immobiliser which can only be diverted with the right key (correct me if i'm wrong?). Coupled to that most insurance companies want either a cat1 alarm or tracker, the only way they can be nicked is if the b******s get your keys?

As for insurance, mines just over £400 full comp so doesnt bother me :p

Its all down to the risks of having a claim. I assume that they think that a small hatch with a big engine owned by a 19 year old would be a bit of a risk of you smashing it up.

Not all young drivers are gonna smash their 172s up, I didn't when I was 21 but some people do! :(

What values did you put on the 172 and the Seat? This can make as much difference as the car itself.

Valued at £6k each.

A small hatch with a 166bhp ish engine is probally less of a risk than a small hatch with a 240bhp 1.8 turbo.

I know that young drivers having 172's and crashing them is rubbish. I had my last 172 when i was 17!

I just want to know why in the insurers eyes is a cheap comparitivly slow hatch so expensive.

cos loads of 'think-they-know-how-to-drive-but-don't' idiots keep writing their cars off (and killing people in the process)! it's pushing premiums up loads...especially for 17 to 26yr olds. It's not fair

my bf only pays £900 fully comp on his Ibiza but he is 21!

*edit* found out he is with norwich union so try them?

  Better than yours. C*nt.
I dunno, I could have a 180bhp 2.0T S60 for £30 less per month insurance - but then that'd be boring. Plus the Seats aren't all that - the Clio is a long way quicker than the std Ibiza.

Plus, if you've been living on Fleet insurance without getting any NCB, you've been living a dream - you should have at least got a Grp1 banger and left it on the drive to build that up in the time, because you should have known this sting was coming...

!?!?! LOL!!!1111! INit bainting...

Yes it is, but comparing a modified car's insurance and a standard car's insurance is the wrong way about it - get the quotes for standard cars, then you're on even terms to start messing about.

I'd still rather the frog than the Spaniard - at least the French don't sleep halfway through the day.

I'm not moaning about the prices. I'm just curious why a std 172 is £700 more to insure than a 250bhp seat ibiza.

Hmm could be that. I remember the bill i got when i ordered three new engine mounts for the 172 back in the day.

Yup. Couple that with the fact you can write off a V6 in a light front ender and there's the main reason they're so expensive - because I suspect most 172/182 accidents occur trying to get tripod mode on country lanes...

Tri pod mod is easy in a 172. Its a lot harder to do in the westie
