Wrong oil used

On Tuesday this week i had a full service...Ive just checked the oil and it seems very thin to me ..im guessing its 5w 30.

I think the garage as put the wrong oil in....Would it have done any damage running the car for the past few days with this oil?

I think im going to replace the oil tomorrow just to be on the safe side.

Will this halfords own brand 5w 40 be suitable ?

Thanks

No it wont do any damage mate.

Its down to personal preference to what oil you use, the correct grade is 5w 40

I doubt you could tell the difference between 5w40 and 5w30 by looking at it to be honest, have you rang the garage and asked what oil they used?

  Peugeot 308
Im sure 5w30 fully synthetic will be fine tbh.

I work for peugeot, and 5w30 is used in most applications.

Garage is not open today but the oil is very very thin ...cant hardly see it on the dipstick at all.

Im going to change the oil just to be safe...With it only just having an oil change im not going to bother with the filter....Is it essential though to change the sump plug washer?

Nope, how warm was the car when you dipped it? Just ring the garage and see what they say... I cant see why you would put 5 30 into anything other than ford/vw.

Looks the same to me warm and cold.....it is very very watery thin ...can hardly be seen on the dipstick at all.

So ok to replace the sump plug without replacing the washer?

Yeah ill phone and ask on Monday as ive just realized i don't have the correct 8mm sump key....Ill only be doing short journeys ...just don't want to f**k the engine ..that's all.

He did say he'd put thin oil in ...would 5w/10w 40w be classed as thin oil?

I didn't think to ask at the time...its only when i checked the oil i was shocked how thin it was tbh.

5w30 is thin oil. 5w40 is "normal" and 15w40 is what you put in old shitters like mine. If the sump plug washer looks in good nick then it will most likely be fine, I dont bother changing them because they never seem to leak.

Maybe another dumbass question as if you've not already gathered ive no idea about cars.

The sump plug with the plastic cover on the under-tray is defo the engine sump and not the gearbox one:eek:

Also will it take the full 5ltrs?...don't want to overfill it.

I don't think it'll take 5 ltrs but not 100%, as for the sump plug.. ermm it'll be a fairly large, black smooth metal sump looking thing it that helps! Gear box one isnt that easy to spot iirc

Me again

Cant get hold of a 8mm sump plug bit until Wednesday /Thursday.Will running it on the 5w 30 (if that's whats been put in) cause any damage?...thats the only thing im worried about,Ive been using it for the past week but only to and from work which is about 10 miles or so.

Im giving the garage a call tomorrow to find out whats been put in....Just dont want to cause any damage using the 5w 30.

Thanks
