BIGASH/FF-Racing X85 Clio Cup Racer Project

Thanks guys :)

Had a pretty good day really! A full days testing apparently is only 4 sessions and I refused to do the 2nd one as a Porsche had dropped fluid the whole way round the track on the racing line so it was pointless going out.

Other than that I worked through a few bits and tried getting to grips with how the car now handles. The hubs have completely exceeded my expectations its just mint now on the front end. The problem is I just need to changes the way I drive it slightly but still going quicker than I ever had before round here.

Managed to knock the geo out in the last session so was one extra job to redo tonight but it's all finished and been checked ready for scruitinerring in the morning.

Just finished cutting the roof out finally for the roof vent so should get a nice breeze tomorrow!

Bed time now and the up at 6.30 to get ready for the day!

Tapatalk won't seem to let me upload photos but I'll get them loaded up tomorrow when I get home :)

Thanks

that is all.

Unfortunately for James he did not intend to do this and was a mishap due to a cracked gearbox casing resulting in the tyres being covered in oil and lose of gearing therefore couldn't slow down in time due to lose of engine breaking and locking up into the corner.

I'm sure James will explain in more detail. Just a shame that it looks like the diff hasn't been installed correctly this causing all his problems.

Unlucky mate was nice speaking to you again and I hope to see you racing again.

Wasn't the only car that took a beating poor poor astra car was epic too!

Oh really, were you in the car?

That Astras in need of a polish, DTM/silhouette cars race on this package?

Sounds like Clio's don't breed very well.

Yeah bit of a bad afternoon! On the first lap of the race I was crunching into 3rd so was having to clutch down and then let the revs drop before engaging as rev matching wasn't helping. This also developed onto 4th gear aswell. I thought when I was out there it was just the syncro's, I considered coming in and retiring it after the first lap but the car was mint other than the gear selection so I wanted to carry on. Quite a few cars got past me as I tried to settle into a rhythm of driving round the problem but then after a while managed to start closing on them. As I was catching Tony I had a big lockup the second I got on the brakes at Shell and couldn't do anything to avoid hitting him, I tried just turning in but it wasn't happening. My sincere apologies to Tony for the damage I have caused would never of wanted it to happen and I feel dreadful. I'm glad he managed to get going again and finish the race.

I managed to limp it to the end of the race with a pretty horrific handling car but anyway. The headlight was just dangling from the loom smashed to bits so that got launched straight in the bin! The front chassis leg looks to of been pushed over to the eye and also there are cracks on the seam sealer to suggest its moved, the wheel it fooked, something is bent on the steering, subframe is kinked, bonnet mount points have moved and the end part of the chassis is pushed in. It will all straighten up just need to get it on a jig shouldn't take long. Just need to get a couple of new panels. The cause of the gearbox issue was then found to be the gearbox casing has cracked again and it has really gone badly this time. The gear oil was all over the engine bay, NSF wheel and tyre and also under the car on the rear beam and the exhaust. Looking at the rear facing camera the lockup started off just with the NSF so i'm presuming where the oil was on the tyre hasn't helped along with the lack of engine braking.

Got to take some positives though as the car was really on form today and a good time in quail still with a fair bit on the table so bodes really well for the car once we have more of a fine tune with the new settings on the car. I also apparently won most entertaining driver of Quali as voted for by the marshals I think they just liked watching the drifting or gravel action at Druids ;) I ended up winning a set of mintex brake pads so happy days.

After seeing the damage I was pretty resigned to the fact of not doing Donington but while driving home was having a bit of a change of heart and Chip and Lesley then offered to come over tonight and help me get the engine and box back out. So that is what we did :) Started off with a compression test as I did feel a sudden dip in power in the afternoon of testing yesterday and sure enough I was about 10psi down of cylinder 2 than before the weekend. I also said to chip it had blown the dipstick out and straight away he said pistons/ring damage :( Engine and box out and then Chip did a leak down test on the engine and cylinder 3 is really pushing through the pistons/rings so not only does it need alot of other bits but now either needs a new engine or a refresh of this one. Pretty certain i'm not going to be able to afford to get it ready for Donington so I guess thats it for the year. Fairly disappointing really with the potential the car has I think but thats life and thats racing.

List of bits needed that I don't have if anyone has anything?:

Front Wing
N/S headlight
Front bumper (Inc top grill)
PMS Wishbone
Subframe
Either an engine or a headset and a piston
JC5 130 gearbox
15" OZ ultraleggera (They don't sell them separately from what I can see)

Thanks for reading and I'll try and do a bit more of a write up with the video's from the day soon :)

Blimey you dont mess about. Cant believe you got all that done after driving home. Sorry to hear about the engine isdue too thats really bad luck. Hope you get it up and running again soon and doesnt cost too much hard earned.

I was really impressed with the way the car had been prepped. Stunning car and looked very quick on track

Sorry about bringing bad news with me as well as a helping hand mate. Me and Lesley were hoping by coming over it would help your chances of making your next race, but having to turn round and tell you that you've got a ring seal issue has no doubt done the opposite.

Let us know if there is anything else we can do to help although personally given the cost of each race meeting I must confess if in your position I would just decide it wasn't worth a quick fix to try and get back out. But if you do want to re ring the motor I don't mind coming ove and building it back up with you, or you could bring it here as I've got better facilities for it.

Should have gone for a watch, seems Mossys 1600 Saxo showed the clios up. I said 2 secs a lap at Mallory and now 3 secs at Oulton, the clio boys need to step it up.

That saxo was keeping the Impreza and Skyline honest in the 2nd race! Impressive!

James,
I have:
Piston
Upper grill
Knackered N/S Headlight
Jc5 089 (you can use the casing on yours, as this is the one the diff circlip popped out of)
Plenty of wishbones but all OEM cup items.

That Saxo was a flying machine but I'm guessing a lot of money and development has gone into it, but to be honest it wants to be quick really as the engine in it will have cost at least 50% of my total car build + I'm pretty sure Ian's clio last weekend in Danny's hands was still doing better times than it was.

Power to weight of the saxo would take a huge amount of money in a clio to match.

nothing difficult about doing so, as long as you have very deep pockets

Not really that much more than what people here are spending here tbh and a smidge over 200 bhp. The same guy who built the engine used to run the pink clio unfortunately he's past away now. Mossy is a good driver.

We heard it was 220 and what does it weigh, 700kg ish.?
Not taking anything away from him, as I was behind him in the first race, and boy does it go.
Big bucks though.

200bhp and 750kgs is closer to the mark.
And a driver who knows how to use it.
Marty's is similar, unfortunately he suffered a catastrophic failure as a consequence of a previous failure.

Well I wasn't far off the was I.

Never get a clio anywhere near that power to weight ratio.

It goes well.
Shame about the 106 though.
