You are correct that the coolant sensor is responsible for turning the fan on & on some if you disconnect the connector with the ignition on the fan will start . One of the 3 black relays in a row is the fan relay ,one is the fuel pump relay one is the fan & think the other is connected with the...
Mayo under the filler cap is no problem & common on the 1.2 16v , sun roof will need taking out including the frame & resealing .if you run your finger round the edge of the sun roof surround & can pus a gap with your finger that's were the water is getting in .
If your second hand lump is good just fit it and should be fine or for spot on running code the injectors to your ecu but will still start run & drive without coding .
For a start the 1.6 has the starter to the rear of the engine & the 1.2 is to the front so 1.2 box wont fit a 1.6 hoses are all different as is the rest of the running gear .

Do you have a trimmer local to you ? I had a set like this & Renault wanted a small fortune for new covers , I got the sides retrimed in leather for £250 left the middle section as is .
£230 sounds good for the rolling road set up , I paid £300 for the one on my megane & was not impressed , no rolling road so no before and after , done outside in there car park & yes it felt quicker but it also killed the mpg wen t down from a constant 62 mpg to around 45 & even driven with...
That's not badly damaged at all , from what you can see in the pics about a days work for any half reasonable body repairer + paint & parts , good to hear no one was injured ;)
Thank god I have only ever seen 1 that was caked over the cylinder port it was never serviced or driven hard & the tight fisted owner just kept topping the oil up think it had about 1 change in 90k came in on 3 cylinder but amazingly once clean & a good oil change it ran fine
Funny enough I tried mine today with the EGR disconnected , when nailed the engine fault light appeared , so put the plug back on . As for the manifold pipe we have tried several things at work with varied results , setting them on fire to carbonize the oil & gunk then brush out with a bottle...
