I only drove a 182 once and couldn't get on with the driving position. Had my 197 over a year now and love it. Having read the forums alot, you will get a good or a bad car. Renault don't seem to make anything in the middle.
Gearbox is great and never baulks. Car kangaroos when cold but only for the first minute. Steering feel is also fine. Having owned a CTR before buying the 197 the steering is miles better in the Clio but it was also terrible in the Honda.
Check to see what has been done on servicing and warranty and make sure the brakes feel strong as the Brembos have a habit of seizing if not looked after. The 2008 197 has the later gearbox ratios (slightly longer 5th & 6th) which won't do anything for performance but will make motorway driving a little more pleasant.

Steering feel is not fine. It's bloody hopeless. There is none. It's overly light, in terms of feel and weight, terrible.
It is accurate though.

i did the exact same thing and never look back the r27 is awsome
I did feel that the steering was over assisted at low speeds, and the wheel felt pretty numb.
Overall a very very good car. I always wanted to upgrade to one, but needed a cruiser, so ended up with a barge that whispers along at 90mph doing only 3000rpm. If I ever buy another Clio, it would be a Nimbus R27. I loved the handling of the 197 I drove. Sure, you need to be going faster to get it to move around under you like a 182, but the upside is high speed stability. The 197 inspired massive confidence in it from the very first b-road corner. Capable machines. Plenty of RS drivers on FRSOC have said the 197/200s are a force to be reckoned with on a race track.
