3,304 days ago since I owned a Renault ..

3,304 days ago I sold my fantastic glacier white r26.

My passat was starting to get a bit long in the tooth with multiple issues that were going to cost more than the car to fix. Wife Bond wouldnt drive the passat as she said it didnt feel safe but I thought otherwise.

The final nail in the coffin was the very helpful Paul from https://diamond-performance.co.uk/ changing over the coolant pump 2 and it making no difference. He spent hours searching for electrical faults but its in the loom somewhere. It just not worth fixing.

I didnt know , or want to replace it really so I had a look around and settled on a Ph1 Clio 172. Except I couldn't find any of perceived value. They were either shitboxes are £10k. Absolutely nothing inbetween.

So I purchased a Mondial blue 172 clio cup, blind.

As ever the car I want isnt in the village, or even county near me. Its the other side of the country. 3mi away from Coombe as it happens. I have been on 2 trains , 2 cancelled trains and 6hrs of sitting down patiently watching scenery go by.

The return leg was faster, but not by much as I got used to new noises , vibrations and feedback.

What exactly have I bought?

Belts and dephaser done 10months ago
Generally pretty sound
Almost standard - just an exhaust and springs

-
One light needs a buff to remove the hazing
slight rust bubble on bonnet
slight lacquer peel on nearside a pillar
Center dash LCD is U/S.
Idle hunts a little ( air leak? )
Driveshaft click when on full lock to the right
Going into 4th quickly when cold results in a shudder. Fine when warm

I have only been on motorways and the odd B road between the seller and my home. The car appears to pick up well , stop well and has average brake feel. Perhaps I have gotten used to the lotus?

I haven't pressed on really yet. This will be explored.

Few sellers pics attached and couple of mine :

Looks a nice base to work with.

The Lotus Cortina in the background needed more photos though.:)

The Cortina has been in that showroom for a few years now.

In my quest for Clio 172 cup perfection ( or just to go broke ) I have decided to start with the lumpy idle.
Not so sure it is lumpy now, Any pointers? Have checked the gaskets at the mating faces where the intake is with a spray of WD40 but no note detected :

Cold

Warmer

Rear End K-Tec stealth

I also noted the radio doesnt seem to do a great deal other than play static. However , someone installed a parrot not of the feathered / flying variety and I put in the default pin and what do you know? It works.

The standard systems is shocking bad , but it works!

Oh and the center radio / time / temperature clock thing doesnt work. I have a spare kindly donated by @paul b. I am just working out when I have time to remove the screws that hold the dash top in place and refit the dead one.

I don’t remember either of mine being particularly smooth (even after a fresh cambelt/dephaser) to be honest so sounds normal to me.

Any ways to tell if the timing is out other than on a RR / with locking tools?
Map sensor vac readings on idle are usually off if cam timing is out. Im sure mine was around 400mbar on idle when correct.

Its hard to tell in the vids but doesnt look too bad. F4r is not really refined

I am curious if its being amplified by the megaphone Ktec stealth exhaust?

I had a spare 30 minutes today so decided to hit some of the plastics with a bit of autofiness rejuvenate. I appreciate this wont last forever and Ill most likely remove the plastic and dust in a black rattle can but for now they came up ok

Had some fun with the cup this evening.

For reference the car was driven last night, parked up and returned to this evening.

Car started fine, drove fine for around 1.5mi and then power started to be sapped away. Pressing harder on the throttle yielded no joy.
Dipped the clutch , revs flair and off we go again.
Repeat the above, power drops and then jerks into life, and drops and jerky. Smells of unburnt fuel.

Did this for the next 3/4mi and ran perfectly.

Stopped after 11mi , left the car for 1h30 and drove home like nothing happened.

Will take it out for a gentle run tomorrow to see if it does the same. Tempted to say its moisture / water in the coil pack or something like that.

No ODB2 at the moment , so dont want to fire the parts cannon

Rushed out at lunch to use DashCmd and my odb2 dongle.

O2 sensor one value fluctuating between just over 0v then .65v

Car idle is rough and smells of fuel

Should be 14 -14.5 ish on a decent one.

Sounds normal for failing injector, itll be due a set if not changed previously. If not its parts cannon plugs and leads onto it

Plugs and leads were done around 1000mi ago 👍

Should be able to rule those out now.

TDC was done years back
O2 sensor I have no records of a change
Injectors as above

If the resistance of the injector is bad its end of life for it usually and a clean wont work. Genuine magnetti marelli arent too expensive, avoid any ebay ones like the plague

Almost live injector resistance results are in.
( from gearbox to offside )
Inj1 15.9
Inj2 16.4
Inj3 16.4
Inj4 15.8

All there , or thereabouts. They look cosmetically in ok condition.

Must be o2 or TDC then at a guess.

I have had a busy day!

I found some spare part treasure including :

1) TDC sensor
2) HT leads
3) Coilpack

Guess that should save me having to invest in these as apparently these were changed over 10mo ago

I am not sure what the part that resembles a kazoo is ( top , right ) though?

I also washed the car to get rid of the salt from the run back from the bodyshop and all the bodyshop dust etc.

Its a very photgenic car but dont be under any illusion. There are marks on a lot of the panels. Its not perfect by a long way

I noticed when I purchased the car my knob was worn.
Thanks to a very helpful man over at https://diamond-performance.co.uk/ I recieved a new knob sticker.
I then put it into the very new, very high tech paint booth and lacquered it. Its currently in there drying now
